Wonderful to see a young Neil Shicoff sing so beautifully...

One does wish that the video quality was sharper and less dark, however this Paris Opera production is just excellent. The costumes and sets do have a certain sumptuousness, while the staging especially in the very moving Tomb scene is compelling. Gounod's score has always been a jewel, and it is lusciously performed by the orchestra and authoritatively conducted. Barbara Hendricks is wonderful as Juliette, she is vibrant, like in her Waltz song, and poignant in the Tomb scene. Her voice is commanding, flexible and has a certain brightness and beauty to it. Of the support cast, Gino Quillico's perfect Mercutio, both witty and noble, was the standout, though the Frere Laurent was also very good. But the best asset was Neil Shicoff. Young and ardent, he sings beautifully with a great ring and brings heroic and affecting sides to Romeo. Overall, an excellent production. 9/10 Bethany Cox
