Gene Simmons could soon be playing the role of his lifetime: A god. The Kiss singer and bassist is currently shopping around a music competition show called Coliseum, on which competitors form bands and perform for a panel of three judges. They also mix and match group members until finding the right combination until Simmons, the show's "Rock Caesar," gives a thumbs up to the winning combination. "If you've got the goods, I will be the god that will make your dreams come true, because I do have the power,...

2014 is a landmark year for the Hottest Band in the World. Kiss started the year off by being inducted into the Rock 'N' Roll Hall of Fame and announcing a tour that will take them across the United States. Not a bad way to kick off the celebration of forty years of makeup, mayhem, and magic. The group now releases a new compilation album featuring one song off of every studio, compilation, and live album. They top it off with a few commercially unreleased tracks that will get their army even more heated up and ready to party with the band in a concert venue somewhere.
The songs off of their different albums aren't always the ones you'd expect the group to choose for Kiss 40. This just shows the guys thinking outside of the box again. Known for "Deuce" off their debut album, this time we get "Nothin' to Lose.

The National Arts Festival is a celebration of the multidisciplinary arts held in Grahamstown, South Africa. This year, it is running from June 30 to July 10 and features dance performances, stage plays and musicals, stand-up comedy, art exhibitions, music concerts, and a film festival.
In keeping with the arts theme, the Naf is screening two excellent documentaries about two very unconventional American artists as part of the film festival. They are: Plaster Caster, which profiles legendary Chicago- based super-groupie Cynthia Plaster, and Ghost Dance, which tracks a visit to Europe by controversial artist Steven Johnson Leyba.
Plaster Caster screens on Tuesday, July 5 at 3:00 p.m. while Ghost Dance screens on Thursday July 7 at 10:00 p.m.
A huge hit on the international film festival circuit in 2001-2002, Plaster Caster was subsequently released on DVD all over the world. (Amazon | Netflix). Filmmaker Jessica Everleth (née Villines) tracks the artistic career of Cynthia Plaster Caster,...

Embedded above is the 8-bit-tastic trailer for the 17th annual Chicago Underground Film Festival, which is running at the Gene Siskel Film Center on June 24 — July 1. The trailer was commissioned by the fest from audio/visual media artist Jon Satrom. While the animation begins very calmly spelling out the festival’s acronym, it soon detonates into a total chaotic video game bomb.
Other than the trailer, Satrom doesn’t have another film in the fest this year. However, he does have an art installation set up in the Film Center that you can go look at before, after and in-between films. The title of the installation is called Purrflux’d, perhaps in honor of Cuff’s Lifetime Achievement Award winner this year, Jonas Mekas, who was good friends with artist George Maciunas, the main organizer of the Fluxus art movement.

In the spirit of Bad Lit’s annual Movie of the Year pick, I’ve decided that I should equally pick just one film as a Movie of the Decade. And that movie is: Plaster Caster.
The criteria I used to come up with this selection was to choose the film that has had the biggest impact on my life. I’ve seen tons of fantastic underground films in the past 10 years and Plaster Caster is one of them. But, no other film has had as big an influence on all aspects of my life as this one has.
In 2001, I was just a dork trying to see as many films as I could at the New York Underground Film Festival. One of the films I saw was the documentary Plaster Caster, which I positively adored almost right from the minute it began. After the screening, I wrote a positive...
