"Weekend Today" spent its Sunday morning broadcast celebrating a major television milestone: 25 years on the air.
Former “Weekend Today” anchors joined Lester Holt and Jenna Wolfe on set to remember their favorite memories from past weekend broadcasts.
Former anchors including Al Roker, Boyd Matson, Garrick Utley, Mary Alice Williams, Scott Simon, Jackie Nespral, Mike Schneider, Giselle Fernandez and Jodi Applegate reunited live in studio on Sunday morning.
NBC News launched a Sunday edition of "Today" as an experiment in 1987, determined to see if the morning television show could work past the weekdays. The program debuted with Maria Shriver and Boyd Matson as co-hosts, and Garrick Utley as the news anchor.
"The idea was, this was your broadcast version of your Sunday paper," Al Roker said during an interview on the show's history.
Five years later, the network launched the Saturday show with Scott Simon and Jackie Nespral, creating a weekend edition of "Today.

When a network falls to 8th place, it’s going to be hard to get eyeballs for its programming. So little wonder that NBCUniversal is planning a company-wide promotional blitz for massive coverage of Super Bowl Xlvi in Indianapolis on the sports, news and entertainment front. It will also utilize Spanish-language programs, kids news services, theme parks, and in-flight programming to cover and promote the game. For the first time in the show’s history, Late Night With Jimmy Fallon will go on the road for a total of four shows from Indianapolis, the first-ever post Super Bowl Late Night live. Looking at this list, it’s clear this kind of omnipresence would have been frowned on by regulators once upon a time. No more. Here are the plans: Coverage of Super Bowl Xlvi from Indianapolis on Sunday, February 5 begins at Noon, Et with the Super Bowl Xlvi Pre-Game Show.

The more I think about it, the more convinced I am that Norah O’Donnell’s departure to CBS may be the biggest defection NBC has endured in nearly two decades – since Brian Ross jumped to ABC in 1994…and certainly since Chris Wallace jumped to ABC a few years before that. I know, I know…”What about Katie Couric? What about Soledad O’Brien? What about Campbell Brown?” The difference between those defections and O’Donnell’s is how it impacts NBC long term. There was little to no collateral damage done to NBC when Couric, O’Brien, and Brown left. Today and Weekend Today easily survived and flourished. But O’Donnell’s departure creates a long term hole for NBC to address – who will succeed Andrea Mitchell?...

It's Ok. Don't feel bad. Campbell Brown already knows you weren't watching her. That's why she's quitting.
The host of CNN's "Campbell Brown" has stepped down from the toughest timeslot in cable news due to her low ratings.
"Simply put, the ratings for my program are not where I would like them to be," Brown says in a statement she released on Tuesday (May 18) . "It is largely for this reason that I am stepping down as anchor of CNN's 'Campbell Brown.' "
Brown had been considering quitting "for some time" and she didn't want to lie about why.
"I have never had much tolerance for others' spin, so I can't imagine trying to stomach my own," she said. "The simple fact is that not enough people want to watch my program, and I owe it to myself and to CNN to get out of the way so that CNN can try something else.

NEW YORK -- CNN confirmed Monday that departing NBC News correspondent Campbell Brown will join the channel for a primetime show beginning in November. CNN-U.S. president Jon Klein refused to confirm speculation that Brown's program would be taking the slot of the low-rated Paula Zahn Now.
The rumors of the demise of Paula Zahn Now have been around much longer than the speculation that Brown would leave NBC for CNN when her contract expires Thursday. Brown told her Weekend Today viewers on Sunday that she would be moving on.
NBC News still wanted to keep Brown, though CNN was able to work out with NBC the terms of Brown's departure that included a clause that will keep her off CNN until November. The 39-year-old Brown, who has worked for NBC a decade and has been White House correspondent and Brian Williams' designated sub on NBC Nightly News, will work for about a month on the air for CNN before having her first child, due in late December.
In a conference call with reporters, Klein wouldn't say that Paula Zahn Now would be canceled. He said that a formal announcement about scheduling would be coming within several days.

Word has come down that CNN is planning to cancel its low-rated news show Paula Zahn Now. Up against Fox News and MSNBC in the very competitive 8pm timeslot, the show often came in third place in total viewers.
Newswoman Zahn has been with the network since September 11, 2001 when she joined anchor Aaron Brown to covering the tragic events of that day. She then hosted a morning program entitled American Morning with Paula Zahn and began hosting Paula Zahn Now in September 2003.
CNN is reportedly trying to woo Weekend Today's co-anchor Campbell Brown away from NBC to fill the slot. Zahn is expected to leave CNN in the fall when her contract runs out. Stay tuned!

NEW YORK -- CNN has offered NBC and MSNBC anchor Soledad O'Brien the co-anchor slot to replace Paula Zahn on its American Morning show alongside Bill Hemmer, sources familar with the deal said. CNN declined comment. O'Brien's contract at NBC concludes at the end of the month. Zahn will anchor CNN's new American Evening program at 7-9 p.m. when the network introduces the show in the summer. O'Brien has co-anchored NBC's Weekend Today show since July 1999 -- her co-anchor was the late David Bloom, who died in April while covering the war in Iraq. O'Brien also reports for NBC's Nightly News and is a contributing editor to USA Today's Weekend magazine. She started at MSNBC when that network launched in 1996 as anchor of a technology news show, The Site. She later anchored MSNBC's Morning Blend, a two-hour news talk show on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Newsday reported Friday that CNN was "wooing" O'Brien with a $1 million offer, and sources confirmed Friday that the deal had progressed to a firm offer, which she was considering. NBC News declined comment, saying it does not talk about individual contracts.
