Edgar Kennedy has invited his boss, Mr. Bipp, to his house for a home cooked beefsteak dinner by Edgar's wife, Florence. Edgar is certain that Mr. Bipp will give him a promotion and give Florence a nice present solely because of the dinner, as Mr. Bipp stated he hasn't had a good steak in three months, beef which is hard to come by. Florence is scheduling the steak to be cooked precisely at 6:30, as Edgar stated that Mr. Bipp is prompt. So when Edgar is out in the garage sharpening the butcher's knife and the doorbell to the house rings at 6:30, Florence, and her brother and her mother, who live with them and will also be at the dinner, assume the person at the door is Mr. Bipp, who they've never met. Under that assumption, they invite the person in to the dinner table. With Edgar unknowingly locked in the garage, the rest of the family members sit down to dinner with the man they've invited into their house, who they don't know is not Mr. Bipp, but a door-to-door encyclopedia salesman. Further complications ensue as Edgar does whatever he can to get out of the garage, and as the real Mr. Bipp arrives for dinner, he who may fire Edgar unless he gets his promised beefsteak dinner.
