The heroine of Ricky was Upaasna Khosla .She was to be introduced in this film. Then she was replaced by Monisha Kohli, who was later dropped from the film and signed for Do Ghulab. Upaasna blasted Manoj Kumar in the media saying he played dirty with her. He did not inform her that she was being replaced. Instead when journalist came for the mahurat he made Kunal Goswami pose for pictures with Upaasna and Monisha Kohli ( who was suppose to be a special guest). Upaasna only found out she was replaced by journalist. Manoj stated he did not drop her from the film because he was not the producer. He was only writing the script. It was the producer who dropped her from the film for unknown reasons.
Ricky is the last release of Manoj Kumar's brother in law Ashok Bhushan as director who had also directed Painter Babu.
Camera man Munir Khan was to direct the film . But due to Manoj Kumar's constant interference during PainterBabu, Munir decided to part ways with Manoj. Director Ashok Bhushan refused this accusation . He stated that Munir was to direct a film titled "Chand Tara" with Kunal Goswami and not Ricky. Chand Tara was a love story with a dacoit angle. Munir was never suppose to direct Ricky .
The film never officially released on VHS home video in the 1980's. A illegal pirate version copy ( taken from a theatre screen) was released by Aman Vision (USA). They did not have the home video rights for the film. Till date the film is unreleased on any format. The only copy is the pirate VHS copy from 1986.
Monisha Kohli was offered the film but had problems with dates.
