Surely Not the Last
Short movies which concerned themselves with shots of fire engines racing to ... well, I would guess to fires, but so far as most of them are concerned, there could be a cat stuck in a tree. Neither, I should imagine, was the fire department shut down after this run nor the entire genre ended. In 1903 Edwin S. Porter would assemble several of these shots and fire-fighting scenes into THE LIFE OF AN American FIREMAN. That same year, this short subject would be reissued.
In many ways these short subjects were shot for the local market, like many of the shots of downtown, as a point of local pride. There was even a standard way of shooting them; as here, the movement would be from the upper right of the frame to the lower left.
