This series marks the first time that the character of Unicron received a toy, and it soon became one of the most famous and popular figures in the entirety of the Transformers franchise. Unicron first appeared in The Transformers: The Movie (1986), and although Hasbro originally wanted to make a toy out of him, the designs fell through. He remained toyless until the release of this series, 16 years later.
A lot of older Generation 1 Transformers can be seen mingling around on planet Cybertron including: Hound, Beachcomber, Crosshairs (Targetmaster), Skyfire, Red Alert, Strafe and Powerglide (episode 1.01 "First Encounter Part 1")

Due to the rushed work the Japanese animators had to do in order to meet the American distributor's requirements, a number of episodes were aired with either unfinished or crude animation in the United States, with a sub-par dubbing job filled with mistranslations. For the Japanese release, the animators had time to go back and redraw some scenes, resulting in episodes of higher quality.
