LONDON -- Scottish Screen, the government-backed funding body, has dished out £250,000 ($390,000) for movie project Freak, the organization said Monday. The project, currently in development, is written by novice film scripter Colin McLaren and is to be directed by Morag Mackinnon, who will make her feature directorial debut. To be jointly produced by Carolynne Sinclair Kydd of Peel Street Productions and David Muir through his banner Umbrella Productions, the movie has no budget or cast set. Billed as a psychological thriller, the movie tells the story of Anwyn whose younger sister has disappeared. Anwyn discovers that her sister has been working the streets and comes to believe that a taxi driver has abducted and killed her. She decides to take up the role of prostitute in order to trap her sister's supposed killer. Muir's Umbrella Productions co-produced the Danish/Scottish comedy Skagerrak while Kydd's credits include line producer work on the New Found Film Blinded.
