- Avinash Verma (Farooq Shaikh), an M.A. student, is an idealistic young man with socialist views and stern principles. He is not affected by the materialistic nature of his generation and strongly opposes acquiring more wealth than needed. He is the son of a wealthy landlord but has left his father's house because of philosophical differences. He works as a part-time writer for a living. He finds an admirer in Geetanjali Gupta aka Geeta (Deepti Naval), his classmate at college (they study at the same government college) and daughter of a textile mill owner Mr Umeshchandra Gupta (Iftekhar), who falls in love with him for his outlook. Their common friends include Satish, Helena (Helena), Rakesh (Rakesh Bedi), Kiran (Kiran Vairale), Javed (Javed Khan), Neena (Neena Gupta) & Avtar (Avtar Gill).
Avinash tries to earn money to writing novels, but no publisher would publish it, saying that his novels are great, but wont sell. Geeta is attracted to Avinash and begins to get close to him. Geeta likes that Avinash has to courage to struggle against the system, despite his poverty. To earn some money, Avinash writes articles for a local newspaper. But he fired one day, for writing against the owners of the papers. Avinash also falls in love with Geeta. Soon, rumors of their affair spread like wildfire in the college. Soon, word reaches Geeta's parents, who scold and warn her against Avinash. They refuse to listen to her point of view and start ignoring her. Geeta wants to marry Avinash, but he says that she would not be happy in his poverty. But they are miserable being apart, and eventually Avinash proposes to Geeta. The friends arrange everything to get Avinash and Geeta married in a temple.
Mr Gupta finds out and invites Avinash home. He offers him a regular paycheck by asking him to manage the Gupta family business. Avinash refuses. Avinash tells Mr Gupta, how his own dad is a rich landlord in a village. He used every trick in the book to enhance his wealth at the expense of the poor and Avinash opposed it. He had to leave house after the death of his mother. Geeta also leaves her father's house and they get married. Avinash finds it difficult to manage this extended family. he takes a tuition, but has to miss his classes to earn money. His professor Choudhary advises Avinash that at this rate, Avinash wont be able to complete his MA on time. To support Avinash, Geeta takes up a 4th grade teaching job at a local school. Prof Choudhary calls Avinash and says that he is thinking of opening a small newspaper with his PF funds. He wants Avinash to join as a journalist. Avinash promises to join and Choudhary starts the formalities to start the paper.
Meanwhile situation at home is that Geeta has a day job and Avinash picks up a night shift at a printing press. As such, the couple meets only on Sundays. Soon, Geeta is preggers. Dr. B. M. Acharya (Anjan Srivastav) bans Geeta from working as that will endanger the baby. Her treatment, medicines and injections are expensive.
Financial insecurity forces Avinash to join a publishing house owned by his classmate Satish Shah (Satish Shah). Avinash's communist articles were getting rejected everywhere and he had no other option but to join Satish. Satish offers to publish Avinash's books. Soon he starts transforming into a ruthless businessman and treads the path he once loathed. Avniash gives in to the commercial realities of running a business. He starts printing popular romantic and detective novels. he starts arguing against the rights of writers, when they demand a higher royalty. He refuses to print the novels which the depict the reality of rural India and its true poverty. Next Avinash comes up with the idea to publish the novels of small writers under a fictitious name.. This way the writers only get a fixed amount for every book and no royalties.
Geeta gives birth to a son. Avinash books a cooperative flat with the help of a company loan, and moves in with his family. Jagat Murari (Yunus Parvez) is a govt official who distributes printing licenses. Satish and Avinash invite him to Avinash's home so that they can offer him a bribe. Geeta sees Avinash offering Jagat money.
Geeta is surprised looking at his change of principles. She knows that Avinash has changed permanently. Geeta hears Avinash advising Satish to get into printing porno books. Prof Choudhary comes to meet Avinash and wants him to join his press, as promised, But now Avinash refuses. Geeta decides to leave Avinash. Avinash realizes his mistake, leaves his job and joins his ex-professor Choudhary's (A. K. Hangal) publishing house.
