“He is such a cold blooded killer, they call him ‘The Iceman’”
Directed by Israeli’s Ariel Vromen (Danika, Rx) and starring Michael Shannon (Man of Steel), Chris Evans (Captain America: The First Avenger) and Winona Ryder (Beetlejuice), The Iceman is a biopic based on the life and events surrounding Richard Kuklinski, the notorious contract killer.
Set in the mid-sixties through to the eighties in New York and New Jersey, The Iceman begins with Kuklinski on a date with Deborah (Ryder) and you see that there’s a warmth to Kuklinski’s character and a sense of humour. It’s nice to see that the film, even in its opening moments, isn’t shying away from showing the grey areas of the story.

The ever-so-intense Michael Shannon plays true life hitman Richard Kuklinski in The Iceman, a bloody drama about the family man who claimed to have murdered over 100 people for the mafia. In the biopic, Shannon is joined by an ensemble cast that includes Chris Evans, Winona Ryder, Ray Liotta, James Franco, David Schwimmer, Robert Davi, and Stephen Dorff.
The film is co-written and directed by Ariel Vromen, who has his biggest project yet with Iceman. Vromen has directed two films previously, Danika with Marisa Tomei in 2006, and Rx with Colin Hanks, Lauren Grahan, and Eric Balfour in 2005, which he also co-wrote.
In a phoner interview, I talked with Vromen about his film, the rising star the drives it, the question of secrecy that it asks, the incredible moments of tension between Michael Shannon and Ray Liotta, and more.
The Iceman opens in Chicago on May 17.

Millennium Entertainment has released a brand new trailer for the upcoming biopic based on the life of notorious mob hit man known as the Iceman. Come on in to check out the new trailer, and how cold Michael Shannon can be.
The Iceman story has garnered quite a bit of attention over the years. It's an interesting and morbid tale. I myself have read several books about the life of the hitman, and there's some scary crap when you sit and think about it. I've been interested in seeing how they bring the story to life on the big screen and judging by the trailer, I don't think any of us are going to be disappointed.
Here's the official synopsis:
Inspired by actual events, The Iceman follows notorious contract killer Richard Kuklinski (Academy Award® nominee Michael Shannon) from his early days in the mob until his arrest for the murder of more than 100 men.

Writer/director Ariel Vromen (Rx) has chosen an interesting subject for his latest film, The Iceman; a New Jersey native named Richard Kuklinski who served as a mob hitman and killed somewhere between 100 and 250 people between the mid 50s and mid 80s, all without his wife and kids having any idea how he put food on the table. Vromen’s film follows Kuklinski from the point where he met his lady love and first got into organized crime back in the 50s, all the way to his capture and incarceration in 1986. It explores his psyche, his methods, and the way New Jersey fashions have gotten increasingly more ridiculous as the decades have gone on. Oh yeah, and one more thing… it’s got Michael Shannon playing the title role. Given what an intense, captivating actor Shannon has developed into over the years, any movie that puts him in a starring role is pretty explicitly setting up his...

A perfectly delightful rich full relentless festival day, except when I look back and realize that everything I saw was in English, which I find mildly embarrassing and slightly unadventurous on my part, especially when attending a festival screening over 300 films from 60 countries. But I saw what I saw: Paul Thomas Anderson’s “The Master,” at a packed 8:30 a.m. press screening; “The Iceman,” by an Israeli-born director, Ariel Vromen, whose two previous features (“Rx” and “Danika”) I hadn’t heard of, and which played at Telluride and Venice; “The Impossible,” a Spain/Us co-production about a family that miraculously survived the Christmas 2004 tsunami in Thailand; and “Shepard & Dark,” an intimate documentary about the nearly-fifty-year friendship between playwright/actor Sam Shepard and his one-time father-in-law Johnny Dark, now a reclusive odd-job-worker. It would have taken an...

Based on a true story, Ariel Vromen’s The Iceman has made its world debut at the Venice Film Festival, and will soon be continuing on to Toronto early next month.
Early reviews for the crime-thriller have already been mixed, and it looks like this could be one that will have audiences a little divided. The cast is undeniably fantastic, headed up by Michael Shannon, and Apple have now released the first trailer, along with a slightly updated poster, to give us a taste of what to expect.
“The Iceman is the true story of Richard Kuklinski, loving husband, devoted father, ruthless killer. He is believed to have killed 100 people between 1964 and 1986.”
Vromen is directing from a script he co-wrote with past collaborator Morgan Land (Rx / Simple Lies), and has assembled a fine supporting cast in the form of Winona Ryder, Ray Liotta, Chris Evans, David Schwimmer, Stephen Dorff, and James Franco.

Winona Ryder is going to play a killer's wife who doesn't know she's a killer's wife.
The "Black Swan" beauty has signed on to join Michael Shannon and Chris Evans in the chilly mob thriller, "The Iceman," according to Deadline.
"The Iceman" tells the story of Richard Kuklinski (Shannon), a family man who carried out contract killings for the mob. Ryder will be playing Kuklinski's wife, Deborah, who had no idea that her husband was an assassin, with Evans playing Kuklinski's mentor, Robert Pronge.
According to The Playlist, Maggie Gyllenhaal had originally been attached to the role of Deborah, but she's just one of several actors who have dropped out of the running with this project. Benicio del Toro, who also recently said no to "Star Trek 2," was originally going to appear in "The Iceman," and James Franco was first attached to the role of Pronge.

Tree Of Life (20th Century Fox) Terrence Malick’s latest effort is both the best film of 2011 and the finest work of his (arguably) mixed, but often masterly canon. A series of vignettes, mostly set in 1950s Texas, capture the memory of a man (Sean Penn) in present-day New York who looks back on his life, and his parents’ (Brad Pitt, Jessica Chastain) troubled marriage, when word of his younger brother’s suicide reaches him. Almost indescribable beyond that, except to say no other film in history so perfectly evokes the magic and mystery of the human memory, which both crystalizes (and sometimes idealizes) the past. Like Stanley Kubrick’s 2001, this is a challenging, polarizing work that you must let wash over you. If you go along for the ride, you’re in for a unique, rewarding cinematic experience. Also available on Blu-ray disc.

In August of 2009 we found out that a movie about one of the planet's most infamous killers, Richard Kuklinski, was being delayed because the producer at that time wanted Channing Tatum for the role. Many of you spoke up about who you'd like to see play the part, and we later found out that one of those names, Mickey Rourke, had been cast in the role.
Now comes a bit of a surprise: there's actually another separate movie based on Kuklinski, better known as The Ice Man, in the works as well. This project, titled The Iceman, comes from Nu Image, and already has its star: Michael Shannon, who can currently be seen on HBO's Boardwalk Empire, and has also been seen in movies like Bug and Revolutionary Road, which nabbed him an Academy Award nomination. Benicio Del Toro is also set for a role in the film, and James Franco is a possibility.
