The power of streaming services has allowed underrated TV shows like The Office and Breaking Bad to gain huge popularity years after their original air dates. Friends and How I Met Your Mother became even more popular after their endings, with fans still discussing their controversial finales today. Cult classics like Firefly and Freaks and Geeks have gained passionate followings through streaming services, proving that quality TV stands the test of time.
Although there are plenty of great TV shows, some of the very best either accumulated popularity in later seasons or didn't gain the attention they deserved until after they ended. Through the power of streaming services like Netflix and Disney+, binge-worthy TV shows are more accessible than ever before. As audiences were able to view older TV shows easily, tuning in as either new or existing viewers, these titles suddenly gained more attention years after the final credits rolled.

Niecy Nash-Betts, who recently won an Emmy for her role on Netflix’s “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” has signed on to host the Los Angeles portion of next month’s Writers Guild Awards. The 2024 event, which was pushed back in the wake of the Hollywood strikes, will take place on Saturday, April 14 at the Hollywood Palladium.
“A good writer is an actors’ greatest gift,” Nash-Betts said in a statement. Added L.A. awards exec producer Hugh Fink (“Saturday Night Live”): “Niecy Nash-Betts is the dream host for this year’s WGA Awards. Her brilliant performance in ‘Dahmer’ – as the courageous woman who helped take down a serial killer who ate his victims – is surprisingly a lot like negotiating with the AMPTP.”
Benn Fleishman of Avalon Harbor Entertainment is also a producer for this year’s WGA Awards in Los Angeles. Additional presenters scheduled to appear at this year’s L.

Hollywood faces a significant imbalance when it comes to its stars. There are some actors like Adam Sandler who can’t separate the profession from real life and cast his friends and family as characters in movies. Then, there are others who vanish into a role for years, portraying their commitment to the art.
Actors like Dwayne Johnson and Adam Sandler often portray characters close to their real-life persona
While bringing their real-life persona into a character is not necessarily a bad thing, there are actors whom the audiences love for it and some whom they hate for the same. Here’s a look at actors who often portray characters close to their public image.

Struggling to recall the last time the internet seemed like a force for good in the world? Yancey Strickler can cite the exact date: March 13, 2013.
That’s the day that Kickstarter’s co-founder and former CEO Strickler and writer/director Rob Thomas launched the “Veronica Mars” Movie Project on the then-four-year-old crowdfunding platform. Within 11 hours, tens of thousands of “Veronica Mars” fans opened their wallets to quickly hit the $2 million goal to bring Thomas’ low-rated high school detective series starring Kristen Bell as the eponymous teen gumshoe back from the TV graveyard as a feature film, which opened in theaters 10 years ago on March 14, 2014.
“It was just love — that’s what it felt like,” Strickler told IndieWire about being in the room with Thomas when the “Veronica Mars” campaign launched, and the fan-raised funds rolled in en masse. “There was a documentary crew there filming; the cast kept calling us,...

As the social and political turmoil of 1960s America spilled into the 1970s, network television executives and producers knew they could no longer ignore the thorny issues being argued over kitchen tables and at work/school. The Vietnam War, the Civil Rights Movement, the Equal Rights Amendment, etc. were driving a wedge between families and neighbors. So when Norman Lear trotted out the unrepentant bigot Archie Bunker on "All in the Family" in 1971, many people in the country felt seen. And while they might not agree on the hot-button topics explored on this show, they could at least laugh through their many disagreements.
There came a point, however (somewhere between President Richard M. Nixon's resignation and the end of the Vietnam War), where television viewers grew weary of all these socially conscious sitcoms. Yes, they were still watching them in huge numbers, but they needed a break from the nonstop tumult of their lives.

Ron Howard is revealing why he didn’t want his eldest daughter, Bryce Dallas Howard, to be a child actor.
The director-writer-actor recently told People magazine that he forbade Bryce from acting at a young age after having to navigate Hollywood as a child himself.
“It’s possible for child performers to really find a lot that is positive within it, but it’s fraught with landmines,” he explained. Ron played Opie Taylor on The Andy Griffith Show at just six years old in the 1960s, and recalled his parents having to supervise him and his brother.
The Arrested Development actor-producer added that he also protected his children from the spotlight because he didn’t want them to be compared to his career if they followed a similar path.

The final scenes of sitcoms hold a significant impact in leaving lasting impressions on audiences as beloved characters say goodbye. Highlights from series like Arrested Development, Community, and The Big Bang Theory showcase memorable and fitting closing moments. The final scenes of iconic sitcoms like Jane The Virgin, Friends, and The Office perfectly wrap up long-running storylines with emotional and humorous touches.
Warning: This article discusses the use of drugs.
In the world of binge-worthy sitcoms, the very final scene of a show reflects upon its past and wraps it up as a whole, often making reference to the first episode or a season arc. The finale of any TV show faces a lot of expectations, let alone the last scene, as it not only sets a tone for the show overall but also should leave audiences feeling content with the show's ending, regardless of whether they want it to finish.

The sitcom “Girls5eva” follows the attempted comeback of a fictional girl group that peaked in the early 2000s, now reunited as middle-aged women. But headed into its third season, it’s “Girls5eva,” not just Girls5eva, that’s trying to start anew. After two critically acclaimed, if evidently little-watched, seasons on Peacock, the show has been resurrected by Netflix, which has bankrolled a fresh batch of episodes and made the entire back catalog available to its massive audience of over 260 million global subscribers — many of whom will encounter “Girls5eva” for the first time as a Netflix original.

Sitcoms are an important piece of television history. Short for situation comedy, sitcoms generally feature characters who appear from episode to episode and find them in everyday situations that often turn comedic. Many sitcoms have been filmed in front of a live studio audience or at least used a laugh track.
With the rise of streaming, the golden age of sitcoms may be behind audiences, but that does not mean that there have not been some great sitcoms over the years. Some of these great sitcoms became pioneers for the genre, while others have become the gold standard that many sitcoms have tried to emulate to various forms of success.

When a tense, twisty BBC thriller titled "The Tourist" dropped on Max in 2022, it became apparent that Jamie Dornan has a gift for playing dynamic, layered characters. This, of course, is not the first time Dornan has excelled in a complex role, as he is also brilliant in "The Fall," the Gillian Anderson-led crime drama that unravels like a tense, slow-burn psychological thriller. In "The Tourist," Dornan plays Elliot Stanley, an amnesiac who must investigate connected cases to uncover his identity, but is repeatedly thwarted by forces who wish to silence him for some reason. Given how tonally diverse "The Tourist" is, with its ability to flit seamlessly between anxiety-inducing reveals and tender epiphanies, it was a bummer for fans of the series when Max dropped it after it was renewed for a second season.
Thankfully, Netflix has acquired the rights for the first two seasons of the show for distribution in the U.

Action Jackson elevated Carl Weathers as a leading action star after Rocky and Predator. The film created a Predator reunion with recurring cast and crew members from the iconic movie. Despite its success, a sequel to Action Jackson was never made, leaving the film as a cult favorite for rediscovery.
Carl Weathers fronted an underseen action gem as his follow-up to Predator, and it's one that really should have sparked a franchise. The NBC sitcom "Night Court" was a satirical take on the zany and chaotic underworld of the midnight shift at the courthouse. With an unconventional, free-loving judge at the helm of this circus, there's no telling what might happen. The series was such a massive hit that it ran for nine whole seasons, featuring a cast of relatively unknown actors that, when assembled, formed one of the most acclaimed ensembles of all time. The show won eight Primetime Emmys and was nominated no less than 32 times. "Night Court" won in a variety of categories, but the actor that ended up taking home the most gold was John Larroquette, who played egotistical D.A. Dan Fielding.
A "Night Court" reboot landed on NBC in 2023. Sadly, few members of the original cast are still around to reprise their old roles, and the show is comprised almost entirely of new characters. Harry Anderson,...

Beyoncé sent her fans a shocker on Super Bowl Sunday, using a Verizon ad to announce “Renaissance Act II” and drop two brand-new country songs. But members of the BeyHive with a penchant for half-hour comedies got a two-for-one deal, as the pop star appeared in the commercial opposite an unexpected partner: “Veep” and “Arrested Development” star Tony Hale.
Hale has spent years of his career playing awkward, offbeat beta males overshadowed by powerful women: “It’s a forte of mine,” he says, reflecting on what his newest collaborator may have in common with Lucille Bluth and Selina Meyer. He felt at home at Yoncé’s side, though, he isn’t totally sure how much she knew about him in return. “We really didn’t have much time to chat,” he laughs. “I didn’t ask her, ‘Have you seen my work?'”

Michael Cera’s cream wins the Super Bowl
Unlike the game, where the number of points scored determines a clear champion, it is up for debate about which ad truly “won” the game. But a case could be made for “Barbie” and “Arrested Development” actor Michael Cera’s whacked-out commercial for CeraVe skincare products.
The weirdness began, as so many things do, in the darkest corners of the internet, where, as many as seven years ago some probably very stoned people on Reddit thought it would be funny to connect the actor’s last name to the product. This continued for a while, until, in recent weeks, Cera was seen hanging out in Brooklyn pharmacies, signing tubs of the stuff. (The New York Times later revealed that this was all part of a planned campaign.)
And on Sunday, it all erupted out. The ad, directed by the comic duo of...

FanDuel paid tribute to Carl Weathers in their Super Bowl ad. Weathers worked with FanDuel on their Super Bowl campaign before his passing, and the company adjusted their ad out of respect for his family. Co-stars Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger praised Weathers' talent and impact, with Stallone crediting him for the success of the Rocky series.
The online gambling company FanDuel paid tribute to the late, great Carl Weathers during Super Bowl Lviii, with their ad featuring what is likely to be one of the final shots of the actor and action star. Weathers sadly passed away earlier this month at the age of 76, with the FanDuel ad ending with the caption “Thank you, Carl,” alongside the actor.

Bob Odenkirk, known for his role as Saul Goodman in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, is set to star in a new action movie called Normal. Odenkirk has had limited experience in the action genre but is poised to pursue more action roles, including the upcoming Nobody 2, which was delayed but is still in development. The potential success of Normal could lead to a career shift for Odenkirk, similar to Liam Neeson's transition into action movies.
Bob Odenkirk has signed on to star in Normal. Odenkirk is probably best known for playing the role of the untrustworthy lawyer Saul Goodman in Breaking Bad and its spinoff prequel Better Call Saul, which recently concluded its run in 2022. However, he may have already found another iconic role with the 2021 action movie Nobody, in which he played an unassuming family man who fights tooth and nail to save his wife and son.

The man, the legend, The Mandalorian. Few performers are able to make such an impact in such distinctly different fashion across the decades, but athlete-turned-actor/director Carl Weathers was certainly one of those. He has died at the age of 76.
Born on January 14, 1948, in New Orleans, Louisiana, Weathers’ initial career was much more focused on sports, specifically American Football, relying on athletic prowess to overcome adversity. He played on teams at Long Beach City College, San Diego State and signed on with the Oakland Raiders in 1970, making a mark as a linebacker.
But after various injuries, he decided in 1974 to focus on performance, pursuing a drama degree at San Francisco State University. Weathers took a familiar route to screens, working on commercials and smaller roles in films and guesting on a variety of TV series.

Sitcoms have been a cornerstone of television throughout the medium's history, and there are countless reasons for their popularity. By putting relatable characters in hilarious situations, sitcoms provide an escape from the dramas in life, typically in short half-hour bursts.
While the desire for high-quality sitcoms has remained strong, streaming platforms have flooded the market, producing new original series on a regular basis. It's virtually impossible to catch up with every new TV series, and this competition can make it hard for sitcoms to compete for audience attention. While there have been many excellent sitcoms, too many get canceled way too soon.
Updated by Jordan Iacobucci on January 28, 2024: Not every sitcom gets the attention it deserves, especially when faced against other more popular series. Unfortunately, there is a long history of terrific comedy series that get canceled far sooner than they deserved but could have been true hits if given another chance.

Many of us were dismayed to learn that the great Carl Weathers had passed away, especially with him being amid a terrific career resurgence thanks to his ongoing role on The Mandalorian. Of course, he’ll always be best known as Apollo Creed, with Sylvester Stallone (noticeably emotional) saying in his tribute that he could “have never accomplished what we did with Rocky without him.” Indeed, Apollo was integral to the films, with him being the sympathetic, honourable antagonist in the first two films and then a stalwart best friend and mentor in the third film before dying in the fourth. His legacy helped spawn a whole other franchise, the Creed films, which are still going strong to this day.
Nevertheless, there was more to Carl Weathers beyond the Rocky films, so we thought it might be appropriate to look at some of his other iconic parts on JoBlo, which deserve a lot of praise.

Carl Weathers, who died Thursday at age 76, made his name as the formidable boxing adversary Apollo Creed in the Rocky films. But it was his career pivot with the 1996 Adam Sandler comedy Happy Gilmore that made him newly relevant to a younger generation. As it turns out, his road to landing in the beloved comedy was an unlikely one.
Dennis Dugan — who directed Happy Gilmore, in addition to such other comedy hits as Problem Child, Big Daddy and the Grown Ups films — tells The Hollywood Reporter that Weathers “literally couldn’t be a nicer guy, and he was so Chubbs. Nobody else could have ever been Chubbs but him.” The film centers on Sandler’s title character, who can’t hack it as a hockey player but becomes a surprising golf sensation, thanks to his monster drives and the assistance of his mentor, Derick “Chubbs” Peterson.

The late Carl Weathers only appeared in four episodes of the critically acclaimed and beloved comedy series "Arrested Development," but the impact he had on the series feels much larger than that low episode count might imply. Playing a heightened version of himself -- an out-of-work actor who's obsessed with mooching off others -- Weathers frequently stole scenes out from under the hilarious Tobias Fünke (David Cross), as the hopeless man's acting teacher, most notably in a hilarious interaction that introduced the phrase, "Baby, you got a stew goin'!" into the cultural lexicon.
In a series that featured a revolving door of terrific guest stars, Weathers was one of the funniest and most memorable. According to "Arrested Development" creator Mitch Hurwitz, we have Weathers himself to thank for the direction and tone of his character on the show. We're very sorry to report today that actor Carl Weathers has died at the age of 76. Weathers was most known for his movie career, playing Apollo Creed in the "Rocky" series and Dillon in "Predator".
But Weathers worked in television as well — and I don't mean just his recent run on "The Mandalorian." One of his most memorable appearances came in "The Shield" season 2 episode "Partners." The cop drama follows the Strike Team, an anti-gang unit in Los Angeles led by Vic Mackey (Michael Chiklis), with the narrative twist the team is just as dirty and murderous as the criminals they investigate. "The Shield" has plenty of memorable guest stars, from Melanie Lynskey as a killer of the week in season 2, to Forest Whitaker as the antagonist (not the villain) of season 5.

Actor and athlete Carl Weathers passed away yesterday at the age of 76, his family has announced. Weathers will be missed not just for the performances he gave but for the way his sense of humor made everything he was a part of better. Whether the actor was teasing Grogu for getting into trouble, appearing as a cheapskate version of himself on "Arrested Development," or voicing Combat Carl in "Toy Story 4," Weathers brought a sense of joy to each project he participated in.
In the case of the "Rocky" franchise, it felt as if the actor never really got the chance to stop playing Apollo Creed despite the character's death in "Rocky IV." His turn as the flamboyant fighter ended in 1985, but Weathers was still (understandably) asked about his part in the action series throughout the decades that followed. The actor fielded these questions gamely and sometimes with a sense of mischief,...

Carl Weathers is dead at the age of 76. It’s shocking to consider, even though his best-known character, Apollo Creed, in some ways was ultimately defined by his death in 1985’s “Rocky IV.” The franchise went on without him, and ultimately followed his son played by Michael B. Jordan. But for the next 38 years, there was the fact that Weathers was in reality alive, well, in astonishingly great shape, and underutilized.
Now, Weathers has died himself. And given that he was one of Hollywood’s most prominent musclemen of the late ’70s and ’80s, an era defined by fitness-obsessed actors who either were athletes or aspired to be them, 76 feels startlingly young. Especially given how vital and active he was up until the very end, even directing a couple episodes of “The Mandalorian” so good that one wishes he could have, for the sake of that show’s quality, directed more.
