Arnold Schwarzenegger will have some famous friends on hand to help him navigate the Celebrity Apprentice boardroom. (Will he say, “You’re terminated” instead of “You’re fired”?)
NBC’s New Celebrity Apprentice, which swaps in Ah-nuld for previous host Donald Trump (wonder what he’s doing now?), has added six boardroom advisors for the upcoming season, the network announced Thursday. And a few of them are already familiar to NBC watchers.

Zodiak USA is hoping that lightning can strike twice, bringing to the U.S. a restaurant reality format that has become a breakout hit on Holland’s RTL4, the same network that launched The Voice. Zodiak will pitch the format, Restaurant Race, to U.S. broadcast networks this week. I hear two of them, ABC and NBC, are on the hunt for a culinary series after striking out with such recent entries as Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution and America’s Next Great Restaurant, respectively. In the original Dutch version, which will be tweaked for U.S. audiences, Restaurant Race centers on two struggling restaurants that compete against one another. Helped by a mentor, they have 72 hours and $10,000 to reboot their business by themselves. The restaurant that performs the best in the eyes of the critic will pocket a big cash prize for further improvements. The format bears some similarities...

Los Angeles, CA, United States (Celebrity News Service) - Celebrity chef Rocco Dispirito left the restaurant business for entertaining at home. Now, his A-list dinner parties are the setting for TV's hottest new cooking competition premiering on Bravo Wednesday.
Dispirito's latest foray in television, after making one of the first leaps of bringing reality cameras into the culinary world with "The Restaurant," sees him play host and judge at his own dinner party, where three chefs compete to serve the best food and ambiance for a weekly ,000 prize.
Dispirito has guested plenty of times on Bravo's signature competition "Top Chef," and now he gets to sit at the head of the judge's table each week with his own show for the network, which also used to air reruns of "The Restaurant" in years past.
"Bravo and I have been looking for a project that we can work on together," Dispirito told Cns.

The last time Rocco Dispirito had a primetime TV series he was opening a new establishment in front of the cameras on a show called The Restaurant. The underrated program didn’t last long and painted Rocco’s world as a very stressful place. Things are different this time around as Rocco gets other chefs in the kitchen and he gets to relax with special guests on Rocco’s Dinner Party. Dispirito admitted, “Yeah. I'm having a lot more fun on this one. That's for sure. And I very smartly left the cooking to other people.”
Rocco explained the premise of the show. He started with the first challenge saying, “Three chefs show up in my kitchen, and I ask them to cook their signature dish. I give them 30 minutes to do it. They know that they’re going to be cooking, so they bring their handpicked ingredients with them.

We have never held back on our opinion that Mark Burnett is a genius. He's turned reality TV into a viable form of entertainment and spawned an entire industry.
From his major successes like Survivor and The Apprentice to his lesser known series like The Restaurant and The Lot, Burnett always brings a fresh perspective and a twist that only he could imagine. Currently his latest foray into competition shows, The Voice, has turned the talent show world on its heels and reinvented the genre once again.
In this interview we edited on behalf of the Archive of American Television, Mark talks about a TV Guide article that said Survivor wouldn't last more than one episode, his thoughts on the term reality TV, the rules of the genre and when he knew Survivor was a hit.

Rocco Dispirito may have made a name for himself as a reality TV hothead on “The Restaurant,” but that was a long time ago. These days, the 44-year-old triathlete and “Dancing with the Stars” alum is kicking back (slightly) with his new show “Rocco’s Dinner Party.” Chefs compete for the $20,000 prize awarded on each episode, each one trying to create the ultimate dinner party for Rocco and some high profile friends. Rocco’s out of the kitchen this time, but he revealed that’s just fine with him in a conference call. “It’s a little weird, but it definitely good for me...

After nearly two years of delays, the more than $70 million lawsuit filed against “Survivor” producer Mark Burnett by his former business partner Conrad Riggs can continue, California Labor Commissioner Julie A. Su ruled this week. Riggs is claiming that Burnett failed to pay him producing fees for his work helping shows such as “The Apprentice” and “The Restaurant” and did not buy him out of his stake in Mark Burnett Productions. But the suit, which was filed in 2008, has stalled while Burnett’s legal team attempted to argue that Riggs violated...

NBC hasn't had much success with reality shows based around the opening of restaurants. First was 'The Restaurant,' the much-maligned reality show that followed chef Rocco Dispirito as he opened a new restaurant in. And then there was 'The Chopping Block,' which you probably don't remember because it was on for 7 minutes in 2009.
Now comes the most ambitious show yet. The winner of 'America's Next Great Restaurant' won't just get a cash prize and sent off to do their thing alone -- this winner gets an investment and coaching from celebrity judges plus three restaurants, in New York, Minneapolis and L.A.
But how many new ideas can there possibly be when it comes to restaurants?

One of the country's top chefs is getting his own show on Bravo. Again. Rocco Dispirito, who also headed NBC's "The Restaurant" which also aired on Bravo, is going to star on "Rocco's Dinner Party" for the network.
On "Rocco's Dinner Party," Dispirito will judge four aspiring chefs as they prepare to throw themed parties each episode. As they cook up their favorite dishes, create appetizers, and design complete menus and decors, Dispirito eliminates chefs after each task.
Rocco's party guests are sure to be the who's who of the culinary world, and "Rocco's Dinner Party" promises to find the chefs, caterers, and restaurateurs who can throw the most memorable soiree.
Dispirito, a spokesman for Bertolli, author of various cookbooks, and even "Dancing With the Stars" contestant," also starred on A&E's "Rocco Gets Real." He's also appeared on Bravo's "Top Chef" as a judge over various seasons.

Okay, take the idea of Shark Tank (or Dragon's Den if you're a BBC America fan), mix it with the Top Chef folks, offer a great grand prize and hope for the best. That's the recipe behind NBC's new food competition show, United Plates of America. The network is turning to the Magical Elves from Top Chef -- no, seriously, that's the production company's name -- to succeed in the food field where NBC has flopped in the past. Remember The Chopping Block? Remember Rocco Dispirito's The Restaurant? NBC has more luck with the dieters on The Biggest Loser.
This go-round is not about a single restaurant. It's about a chain of restaurants. To me, that's a questionable goal. Most successful chains start off with one great restaurant and then take off. This concept is go big or go home. Maybe it's more complicated, but it doesn't sound that way.

Mark Burnett produces epic unscripted television, but only sometimes does epic work with the subject matter (Survivor, yes; Rocco Dispirito's The Restaurant, no). His adaptation of the Dragon's Den format into ABC's Shark Tank definitely does work, and has actually improved on the original series while retaining everything that works. The series originated in Japan, where it's called Money Tiger, but I've never seen that version, and instead was introduced to the UK version on... keep reading »

Spike TV has given a 10-episode order to producers Ben Silverman and Robert Riesenberg for a reality series dubbed The Club, which will chronicle the nightly goings-on at a dance club in Las Vegas as it seeks to compete with the high-wattage casinos on the Vegas Strip. The series is scheduled to premiere Oct. 12 in the 10 p.m. time slot. Silverman, who heads the NBC Universal-based Reveille production banner, is creator and executive producer of The Club, which will train cameras on nightclub ICE. Riesenberg, president and CEO of ad giant Omnicom's Full Circle branded entertainment unit, and Kevin Dill are also executive producers. Silverman and Riesenberg previously partnered to produce two similarly themed shows: NBC's The Restaurant and Bravo's Blowout, set in a tony hair salon.
Spike TV is stepping into the ring with Ultimate Fighting Championship for a series about the martial arts sport. The cable network has ordered 13 hourlong episodes of Ultimate Fighter to begin airing in January. The series will be executive produced by Craig Piligian (American Chopper) of Pilgrim Films and Television and Robert Riesenberg (The Restaurant), CEO of Full Circle Entertainment, the branded entertainment division at Omnicom. Set to begin shooting in September in Las Vegas, Fighter will chronicle a competition among 20 athletes to earn a shot at a spot in the UFC league. Mixed martial arts involves fighters of different weight classes battling each other using techniques from karate, judo and kickboxing.

American Express is continuing its association with the producers of NBC's reality show The Restaurant by partnering with them on the new Bravo reality series Blow Out, debuting Tuesday. The show, which follows "renowned beauty stylist" Jonathan Antin as he opens a salon in Beverly Hills, will feature integration of American Express' OPEN small-business network services. An Amex spokesman declined to discuss specifics of the deal but said the financial services firm will feature Antin and the show prominently in a multimedia ad campaign set to launch today and run through the six weeks of the show's scheduled life. Antin will be featured in Amex ads on network and cable TV, on radio and online -- much as star chef Rocco DiSpirito has been on The Restaurant.
The Maloof family, whose interests include the Sacramento Kings basketball team and the Palms Casino in Las Vegas, are turning their attention to the entertainment industry, closing an exclusive first-look production deal with MGM Television Entertainment. The deal between MGM TV and the newly formed Maloof Television -- the first overall deal in MGM's TV division -- covers several types of television formats, including reality, drama and comedy. The first project envisioned under the new deal is reality-based. Currently untitled, it promises to offer viewers a look into the "entrepreneurial arena" in which the Maloofs operate. In addition to producing, the Maloof brothers -- Gavin, Joe, Phil and George -- and their sister and mother will appear in front of the camera, and the series also will involve a competition with a big payoff. Ben Silverman of Universal-based Reveille and an exec producer of The Restaurant has been brought in to executive produce.

Fear Factor and Las Vegas were hot for NBC on Monday, which also gave a boost to week two of The Restaurant. With CBS' lineup in rerun, NBC had no trouble winning the night in adults 18-49 (4.5 rating/12 share), though CBS' maintained a comfortable lead in total viewers (11.3 million). Fox was slow out of the gate at 8 p.m. with The Bernie Mac Show but The Swan showed some life at 9 p.m. NBC opened the night with the win at 8 p.m. with Fear Factor (12.8 million viewers, 5.3/16). The peacock stayed on top in 18-49 at 9 p.m. with Vegas (11.6 million, 4.7/12) topping CBS' 9-10 p.m. encores of Everybody Loves Raymond (13.1 million, 4.2/11) and Two and a Half Men (12.2 million, 3.9/10).

The return of The Restaurant did only modest business in the 10 p.m. hour for NBC on Monday while the under-the-knife makeover reality series The Swan showed some spunk for Fox. NBC won the 8 p.m. hour with a repeat of Fear Factor (11.9 million, 5.1/15), and the peacock saw another plucky performance at 9 p.m. from freshman drama Las Vegas (11.3 million, 5.0/13).

SYDNEY -- Australians love U.K. culinary Whiz Kid Jamie Oliver, but New York's Rocco Dispirito? Forget it. Network Ten has dumped The Restaurant after only one episode because viewers stayed away in droves. Network Ten acquired the Mark Burnett-produced six-part series under its output deal with Universal and promoted it heavily during airings of its top-rated show, Australian Idol. But despite the exposure to the 2.2 million viewers now hooked on Idol, the opening episode of The Restaurant only mustered a national audience of 460,000 viewers Monday night.

The producers of NBC's The Restaurant might be betting on The Casino for their next reality hit. Sources said Mark Burnett and Ben Silverman are working on a spinoff of The Restaurant, which chronicled the behind-the-scenes action surrounding the opening and the running of a Manhattan restaurant headed by chef Rocco DiSpirito. The Casino would take a similar insider look at the workings of a casino. Burnett has been spotted scouting possible locations and meeting with casino owners in Las Vegas, though sources stressed that the project is still in early stages of development. The Restaurant, from Mark Burnett Prods., Silverman's Universal-based Reveille and Magna Global Entertainment, built up nicely in the ratings week-to-week, regularly ranking as the top Sunday program in the adults 18-49 demographic in the second half of its run.
CBS had the top show of the week by a wide margin in CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, but that didn't stop NBC from earning its 13th straight win in the adults 18-49 demographic in the week ending Aug. 24. CBS led the primetime pack in total viewers for the week (8.7 million) and placed a close second to NBC in adults 18-49 (NBC's 2.9 rating/9 share vs. CBS' 2.7/9). Thursday's CSI rerun ranked as the top dog of the week in total viewers (14.6 million) and adults 18-49 (5.0/14). NBC was again buoyed by the steady performance of its summer reality originals, including Monday's For Love or Money 2 and Sunday's The Restaurant. But the big surprise for the peacock last week was muscle flexed by the special 10 p.m. Thursday airing of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, the hit makeover show from the peacock's cable sibling Bravo. Queer Eye wound up beating CBS' 10 p.m. Without a Trace rerun despite Trace's advantage from the CSI lead-in.

CBS did respectable business on Sunday with its original telepic Code 11-14. The eye network won the night in total viewers while repeats of The Simpsons and Malcolm in the Middle drove Fox to take the night in the adults 18-49 demographic, according to preliminary estimates from Nielsen Media Research. Code 11-14 ranked as the most-watched program of the night with an average of 11.7 million viewers and 3.2 rating/ 9 share in the adults 18-49. NBC won the final hour of primetime in the adults 18-49 demo with The Restaurant (7.9 million viewers, 3.7/11 in adults 18-49), but the peacock still trailed Fox for the night in the key demo (Fox's 2.7/9 versus' NBC's 2.5/8). ABC appeared to trail its rivals for the night with its coverage of the Little League World Series, but reliable estimates for the live game coverage won't be released until Tuesday.

The NBC reality series was the standout on a night of weak ratings for the Big Four broadcast networks, according to preliminary estimates from Nielsen Media Research. The Restaurant averaged 8.2 million viewers and 4.0 rating/11 share in the adults 18-49 demographic, which marked the highest 18-49 demo score of any program on the night and helped NBC tie Fox for the night in the demo (2.6/8). CBS led in total viewers (8.4 million), thanks to a good start at 7 p.m. with 60 Minutes (10 million, 1.9/7) and 8 p.m. rerun of Without a Trace (9.5 million, 2.1/7). Fox was buoyed as always by The Simpsons (7.1 million, 3.0/10) and an hour of Malcolm in the Middle reruns (7.2 million, 3.1/9) from 9-10 p.m. ABC was dragged down by the weakness of its X Games coverage from 7-9 p.m. -- the second hour of the extreme sports fest dropped to cable-level viewing levels (3.3 million). ABC's fortunes picked up from 9-11 p.m. with a rerun of the conclusion of miniseries Stephen King's Storm of the Century (5.5 million, 2.2/6).

It was an underwhelming night of repeats on Sunday for the Big Four networks, according to preliminary estimates from Nielsen Media Research. The only standout was one of the only nonrepeats on the schedule, NBC's 10 p.m. reality series The Restaurant (7.8 million, 3.6 rating/11 share in adults 18-49), which built on its lead-in from the 9 p.m. repeat of Law & Order: Criminal Intent (9.4 million, 3.1/8). But CBS still won the night in viewers (7.5 million) thanks to 60 Minutes (9.9 million) and a special 8 p.m. rerun of drama series Without a Trace (7.8 million). Fox narrowly topped NBC for the night in the adults 18-49 demographic (2.9/9 versus NBC's 2.6/8) with its regular lineup of comedy reruns, led by The Simpsons (7.6 million, 3.6/12) and Malcolm in the Middle (6.8 million, 3.2/9). ABC was sluggish for the night with a 7-9 p.m. telecast of theatrical Angels in the Outfield and 9-11 p.m. repeat of its telepic Stephen King's Storm of the Century adding up to a nightly average of 6.3 million and 2.1/7 in adults 18-49.
