Viaplay’s Central and Eastern European production division Paprika Studios has exited the Scandinavian media group.
A management buyout led by Paprika CEO Ákos Erdős will return the Budapest-based producer to its indie roots, and marks the latest chapter in Viaplay’s strategy to recover from a financially devastating 2023.
Selling Paprika was among the plans floated last week as part of a recapitalization program at Viaplay, which is targeting double-digit profit margins in five years’ time. Terms of the agreement were not revealed.
Paprika has been part of Viaplay since 2012, initially joining what was then known as Modern Times Group. After Viaplay decided to focus on its Nordic and Netherlands operations and a content strategy based on premium sports, acquired films and series and local non-scripted productions, Viaplay offered Paprika management the chance to buy back the business. An offer was received on January 10 and the transaction closed on Friday (January 19).

The next night will see Feardemic and IGN present the Horror Game Awards, celebrating the best horror games of 2022, and honoring the developers who made them. That does not, however, mean that you have months to cast your votes, because...

Produced by Andrea Iervolino and his new Space 11 label, the reality show will feature 40 fighters from across the globe training and learning to fight without gravity, with programs mirroring those used in astronaut training.
Only eight contestants will make it past the training round and will compete in the main Mma-zero G competition. In a dramatic series finale, the final two fighters will go into outer space and face off in a custom capsule aboard an Earth-orbiting space station.
The 24-episode series will document everything from the initial training to the galactic final fight. There will also be 12 bonus episodes streaming for fans who want to follow the training sessions.

Reality dating shows have been a guilty pleasure among audiences for decades, but a common critique of the fan-favorite genre is the romanticized (for lack of a better term) idea of dating on national television.
Aside from cameras following contestants looking for love — or fame? — in recent years, dating shows have been scrutinized for their choice in contestants. In a day in age where hit shows give lucrative platforms to reality stars, viewers question whether casts made up of genetically-blessed twenty-somethings are searching for a soulmate or a social media sponsorship deal.
With “Labor of Love,” Fox is hoping to avoid unrealistic dating show tropes by casting the most mature set of contestants in recent broadcast history with a 41-year-old established lead, Kristy Katzmann, and a group of male suitors ranging from the age of 36 to 46.

“The Glass House”
ABC put 14 contestants into a house, and let America vote to decide who would be evicted and who would win $250,000. But with low ratings and a lawsuit from CBS claiming the show was a ripoff of “Big Brother,” “The Glass House” lasted just one season.
“I Wanna Marry ‘Harry'”
More than a few dating competition shows involve some kind of deceit, but few were as ridiculous as the one at the center of Fox’s “I Wanna Marry ‘Harry.'” Starring a male lead with only a slight resemblance to the British prince, the show pushed the limits of credulity.
“Joe Millionaire”
Attempting to expand on the format perfected by “The Bachelor,” Fox debuted “Joe Millionaire” just one year later, pitting contestants against each other for the affections of an average Joe whom they believed to be rich. Over a decade later, star Evan Marriott is still apologizing for deceiving those women.

Well, it’s official: Jussie Smollett will not be returning to “Empire.”
On Wednesday, Fox Entertainment CEO Charlie Collier told reporters at the Television Critics Association press tour that “Empire” co-creator Lee Daniels was correct, Smollett won’t be back for the show’s final season — even though Fox extended the actor’s option for Season 6 when the hip-hop drama was renewed, before they knew it was coming to an end.
And now that we know for sure the former “Empire” star truly is not returning, fans have to be wondering what will become of his character, Jamal Lyon — who wed his fiance Kai (Toby Onwumere) on the final episode of Season 5 in which Smollett was featured — when the show returns for its sixth and final season this fall.

It will be one five-week season and out for Fox’s reboot of reality series Paradise Hotel.
“We won’t be bringing it back,” Rob Wade, Fox’s President of Alternative Entertainment, told Deadline at TCA on Wednesday.
“We were very proud of Paradise Hotel but ultimately it was designed to air over many, many hours, and we started it relatively short, three times a week. We felt it didn’t quite perform at the level we wanted it to perform, and if we are going to get the opportunity to try a new show, we have to have the space. But we were very happy with the show, it was a great show and highly entertaining. and the production company did a great job.”

Paradise lost: the “Paradise Hotel” reboot has been canceled after one season at Fox, the network’s Alternative chief Rob Wade told TheWrap exclusively during the Television Critics Association press tour Wednesday.
“I think that ‘Paradise,’ obviously, we had a good run at that,” Wade told us. “I think when we launched it it was just before the summer. It didn’t perform as well as we wanted, but we were really proud of the show. But I think realistically, for ‘Paradise,’ we won’t be bringing it back. And I think, you know, you have to choose your shots. There’s only a certain amount of real estate you have on the network and I think it just felt like, while we loved the show, the point of that show was it was many, many hours.

Craig Plestis of Smart Dog Media and SallyAnn Salsano of 495 Prods. have more than three decades in the unscripted business between them. Despite working on very different series — his “The Masked Singer” imported a popular Asian format but kept its biggest personalities hidden behind giant costumes, while her “Paradise Hotel” reboot relies heavily on the audience making a connection with the contestants — they agree that the most important elements in the genre are to have passion and take big swings as producers.
Here, Plestis and Salsano talk about the increasingly competitive television landscape, how producers should use social media to be advocates for their own shows and what lessons they’ve learned along the way in their storied careers they wish they knew when they were first starting out.
How do you continue to push yourselves to come up with ideas that feel fresh, even when the reality TV landscape...

Fox’s “Paradise Hotel” revival came to an end Thursday with some less-than-heavenly Nielsen numbers, placing the network in fifth among broadcast’s primetime rankings for the evening — behind Spanish-language network Telemundo.
The two-hour “Paradise Hotel” finale settled for a 0.4 rating among adults in the key 18-49 range and 1.3 million total viewers.
Over on NBC, Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals scored the broadcast network the first-place trophy in both the key demo and overall eyeballs.

Veteran reality producer SallyAnn Salsano is giving dating apps the boot. In her professional opinion, finding love on a reality show is a much safer option.
“Finding love on a dating show — I used to always joke around, even when I do ‘Shot at Love’ and when I was doing ‘The Bachelor’ and now [‘Paradise Hotel’], it’s interesting. It is the safest way to meet someone,” Salsano tells TheWrap.
“We background check them… they’re medically checked. All of your options, you know who they are. They are who they say they are,” she says. “Unlike if you go out to a bar or you’re on a dating app, these people have all been vetted by multiple professionals. Like, you go to the bar, it’s anyone’s guess.”

The Toronto Raptors clawed their way to a Game 1 win on Thursday night to tip off the NBA Finals, which handed ABC a very easy victory.
Unfortunately, as anticipated, 2019’s first game of the championship series was down quite a bit from last year’s comparable contest, as were ABC’s primetime averages (-23%). Adding a Canadian team and subtracting LeBron James was not expected to work out for the league or its broadcast partner.

“Elementary” didn’t really take anyone to school on Thursday when the CBS drama’s seventh and final season started with a new low for a premiere.

Will CBS’ Love Island succeed where Fox’s Paradise Hotel has failed? The Eye network has announced that its adaptation of the hit U.K. reality show will premiere on Tuesday, July 9 at 8/7c and air five — yes, five — nights a week through Wednesday, Aug. 7.
For the uninitiated: Love Island sends a pack of sexy singles (or “Islanders”) to an exotic locale in search of love. Every few days, the Islanders must couple-up — and those who fail to find a partner are at risk of being “dumped” from the island. Along the way, challenges arise in the form of new arrivals and myriad dramatic twists.

Hannah B. met her boys Monday night — and some modest ratings, as the Season 15 premiere of “The Bachelorette” hit a record low for the “Bachelor” franchise’s season debuts. The episode was down 7% in the key adults 18-49 demo from its previous premiere last summer and down 15% in total viewers.

Paradise lost — badly. Fox’s “Paradise Hotel” revival premiered to very un-heavenly Nielsen numbers on Thursday, drawing just a 0.5 rating/2 share among adults 18-49 and 1.4 million total viewers.
CBS won primetime thanks to “The Big Bang Theory,” “Young Sheldon” and its “Mom” season finale.
Led by “Grey’s Anatomy,” ABC was second. NBC came in third, which means you pretty much know where Fox ended up among the Big 4 broadcasters.

The Big Bang Theory led Thursday's broadcast ratings across the board, holding fairly steady a week ahead of its series finale. Fox's Paradise Hotel reboot, meanwhile, came out flat, and Grey's Anatomy tied a series low in adults 18-49.
The penultimate Big Bang Theory scored a 1.9 rating among adults 18-49 — up slightly from last week's early numbers and even with the finals — and 12.25 million viewers (vs. 12.48 million a week ago), leading both measures by significant margin. Young Sheldon (1.5, 10.35 million) finished second in both adults 18-49 and viewers.

To watch all the hours of reality television that SallyAnn Salsano has produced — from “The Bachelor” to “Jersey Shore” — you would need to spend more than a month staring at your TV.
As it turns out, Salsano has managed to squeeze in some couch time herself, studying the genre and applying its lessons to her latest show — Fox’s revival of “Paradise Hotel.” You can watch an exclusive clip of the first episode above.
“It’s kind of like if ‘Big Brother,’ ‘The Bachelor,’ and ‘Survivor’ had a baby, this would be its love child,” Salsano told TheWrap, speaking from a remote village in Mexico where she is breathing new life into the dating show that first aired on Fox in 2003.
Though Salsano wasn’t involved in the making of the original series, she was a vocal participant from her sofa.

Reality TV may have gotten its groove back, and it’s all thanks to a bunch of B-list celebrities attempting to carry a tune underneath elaborate costumes. The success of Fox’s “The Masked Singer” has injected new life in the unscripted world, which has struggled in recent years to generate the kind of buzz and excitement that defined the genre in the early 2000s.
Now, producers are dusting off edgy formats that might have been considered too outlandish just a year ago, and executives say they’re feeling emboldened to take a chance on unusual concepts. Much like the early golden age of reality, many of those formats hail from overseas — this time especially from territories like South Korea, where the idea behind “Masked Singer” originated.
“There has definitely been a change in pitches and types of pitches,” said Fox alternative entertainment president Rob Wade. “People are definitely thinking in a different way already.
