Just plain fun
soloview13 February 2007
The women in this series appear as if they're having fun and they take us along for the ride.

The relationship between Felicity Kendal & Pam Ferris is like salt and pepper. One is spicy, sharp and speaks her mind. Sometimes this places her in a 'dangerous' situation but she's willing to take the risk.

The other is more diplomatic and a tad cautious. This makes a good blend which will reach most of us (women, that is).

You know at the outset there's little chance of real danger but it's a pleasure to have a cup of tea while enjoying their adventures.

Sugar and spice make a good combo. The Brits really show us up -- almost all the time. Watched them from the outset. Delighted they keep coming back.

pleasant series
blanche-224 July 2015
...and it has real women in it, Felicity Kendal and Pam Ferris, two dynamite actresses.

Rosemary & Thyme is about two women, Rosemary Boxer and Laura Thyme who are in the gardening business together. Everywhere they go to work, they become involved in a murder mystery.

In order to enjoy the show, you have to accept two conceits. The first is, both these women are incredibly nosy. They come into a situation to fix, put in, or expand a garden and before you know it, they're sneaking around roofs and attics and asking outrageous questions.

The second conceit is that the solutions are sometimes really out there and you wonder how they ever figured them out. Hidden messages on trees, that sort of thing. Wild.

Nevertheless, I like it. Sorry to hear it was canceled.

Excellent show - should never have been cancelled!
Joh1001 November 2011
A few months back I caught this on a repeat and decided I liked it enough to buy the complete collection on DVD - and very glad I did! This series is an excellent light-hearted mystery show suitable for the majority of audiences. I have watched a good deal of crime and mystery television - and while many shows out there are more 'groundbreaking' than Rosemary and Thyme: it must be said that this show is excellent fun - it doesn't take itself seriously and the two main characters: Rosemary Boxer (Felicity Kendal) and Laura Thyme (Pam Ferris) are great fun to watch and make for an excellent team. It's a huge shame that ITV decided to cancel this series before series 4 began as this was an amazing show and I loved watching every minute of it.

why has this fantastic series been canceled??
silvadv117 September 2006
We have seen just a bit of the second season here in the US. We understand that the series produced a third season and that it has been axed in England. What are the powers that be thinking when they eliminate a program like this? Excellent drama, excellent mystery, excellent actors.

We love this program! There are so many and too many reality series on prime time television and little enough to entertain us without overt violence! This series keeps you on the edge of your seat, all the while entertaining folks to the max. Sponsors love to replace quality shows like this one, with cheap reality shows instead. So sad for the viewing public.

Pleasant light fare
askdrphoto29 April 2006
Well this may not be to the taste of everyone but it isn't as dreadful as the previous poster says at all. I think the women gardeners who end up being detectives are believable characters, who use intuition, common sense, keen perceptions of character, as well as their knowledge of horticulture, to solve crimes. This is not a blood and cuts, men shooting at men, plot driven macho show. There are so many shows that are completely plot driven, with high tech effects but the character has no basis in real life that make this gentle show refreshing.

I like this, consider myself well read and educated, etc but I can see not everyone will like everything. It isn't necessary to put it down with such rancor. When I see such unnecessary venom on a review, it makes me wonder if the writer were rejected for a job on the show or was dumped by someone on the show.

So, this is light pleasant fare. When it is on public TV on Mystery night, I watch it. There are a lot worse shows on American TV, no need to dump on this if it isn't to one's taste. And if you like gardening, it is fun.

And I love the way British TV has realistic, believable women who aren't babes in leads.

bring back Rosemary and Thyme
karen_southworth3 June 2007
I love this show. This is my Sunday night tradition, Watching Rosemary and Thyme. I have seen them all and a few times over. I had been waiting patiently for a new season only to find out the show had been canceled by an English company. If there is any way to get them to listen, please do. The 2 actresses playing Rosemany and Laura are wonderful. So believable, and fun to watch. The stories are wonderful also. I am an Agatha Christie fan, and these stories are as good. I am devastated, please make some more episodes. I love the gardens, the stories, and the actresses. There are so few good mystery series on TV now. Especially one, like this show, where you can tell care has been taken to have beautiful scenery, likable characters, interesting plot lines, and not a lot of gratuitous violence. I love it.

Good, Clever, & Clean Fun
jazzzbaby3 July 2006
I just adore this show! I find the stories smart & clever, and the two main characters, Rosemary & Thyme, extremely entertaining, and likable. It is nice to sit back and watch a murder mystery without all the obvious gore that can come with it.

I must also mention, the background scenery is fantastic! I feel as if the backdrops are as much a steady character in the show as are Rosemary & Thyme. With this I am learning a thing or two about horticulture which in turn is making me want to jump into gardening with my Sherlock Holmes hat & pipe!

I am a youngster...(35 years old)....so it's not just for those who might be considered it's ONLY demographic. If you enjoy good murder mysteries with a dash of clever fun, then this is a must for you to check out.

More than just your average "who done it" show
momnj20 June 2006
This show is addicting. It's got everything you could possibly want: good scripts; drama; adventure; comedy; top notch guest stars; eccentric characters; beautiful locations; and, great acting.

Felicity Kendal and Pam Ferris are terrific together. The chemistry between them is wonderful. You can tell that they really like each other. It's obvious that they're friends on and off screen.

They really work well together sleuthing and gardening. They always manage to land on their feet even though they occasionally go off on the wrong track when trying to solve the crimes. They work well with the police and never seem to be told that they're butting in. Their opinions and theories are respected, most of the time.

In one episode, Laura (Pam Ferris) is not only on the trail of a killer she's on the trail of a scrumptious French pastry she'd eaten while on a school trip decades before. Her obsession with finding this pastry is a great comedic subplot to the actual story. They're on the French Riviera trying to restore a garden and solve a murder, and she's questioning practically everyone she meets about these pastries. Priceless.

You've got to buy this series. It's worth every penny. I love it and I think you will too.

Thoroughly enjoyed!
ladybug253526 March 2015
I was highly entertained by this program. While the episodes weren't particularly difficult brain teasers, the mysteries were adequately engaging and intriguing while the characters well drawn with logical motives (generally explained at the end). I liked that the show avoided obvious red herrings, and didn't try to "trick" the viewers with hidden clues; though sometimes the guilty party was a bit too easy to figure out (and sometimes too early which can spoil the progress of the story line), while our amateur sleuths were still stumbling about--nonetheless a fun exercise for us armchair detectives.

I really enjoyed the main characters. I thought they were well-matched and eccentric enough to be interesting without being too annoying. The guest characters were all pretty well fleshed out as well, which helped the show a great deal. I thought the fact that they were gardeners was a unique hook that gave them reasonable access to the nooks and crannies of the parks and residences they were investigating, as well as a somewhat plausible excuse for stumbling over so many bodies. If you dig deep enough, wide enough and in enough places, you're bound to come up with something....

I was lucky enough to be able to binge watch all three seasons--which offers both pros and cons. The unlikelihood of these two women constantly becoming embroiled in a new murder mystery each week becomes much less plausible when you watch the shows back to back like I did, but then that's the case with any program of this nature. The bickering between the two main characters also became a bit more annoying than if the episodes had been watched a week apart--but I can hardly fault the program for the way I decided to devour three seasons in one go.

The fact that the program managed to keep me involved and guessing right along with the cast for the full three seasons is a compliment to the writers. It can't be easy to come up with unique murder mysteries for that many episodes, yet they did manage to avoid feeling repetitious for the most part. I even managed to learn a bit about plants and gardening that I hadn't known. Good job! In all honesty, while I understand why many people would be disappointed by the cancellation of this program, after 3 seasons it had started to feel a bit stale. Again, though, if I was watching it as it had aired weekly with summer breaks or whatever, I may not have felt that way at all, so take this opinion for what it deserves. Overall an entertaining program worth a go!

Why was this show cancelled? It was so relaxing to watch, and one of the better detective series of recent times!
TheLittleSongbird4 September 2009
Of course I have grown up on Inspector Morse, Touch of Frost and Midsummer Murders, but Rosemary and Thyme so deserves to be up there with them. As so many other commentators have so rightly said, why was this fantastic series cancelled? Sure I don't think it is as complex as Morse, but it is very entertaining, fun, and relaxing to watch! Visually, it's lovely to look at, some of the gardens featured in the series are just beautiful beyond words. The theme tune by Christopher Gunning was superb, and had this Irish folk music feel. Felicity Kendel and Pam Ferris are perfect as the female gardeners/sleuths, they had great chemistry, and there are many memorable moments in the series. In conclusion, if you see this series on television, or see it in the shop, watch it, because you'll be glad you did. 10/10 Bethany Cox

Delightful, light mysteries
alvram-6433526 April 2018
This series is what I would call "light mysteries" not to be taken too seriously, but the chemistry between the actresses is so much fun it makes it addictive and a must watch entertainment. I enjoyed the whole series very much.

Again, why was this show axed? It is fantastic!
appleimacdude20 January 2007
I love this show, I have recently found it on KPBS - it is a very nice change from typical American TV fare - it is very well written, and the acting of the main cast, as well as the guest actors, is all top-notch - you quickly love these two women, both admiring them and feeling for the struggles life has thrown at them - they are a charming, feisty duo!

The scenery is breathtaking as they go from place to place, and makes one in America feel like a world traveler -

I hope ITV will change its mind on canceling this series, or that KPBS will pick up the tab to film this show itself -

Comments from the first season
boomcoach7 May 2007
I have only seen the first season, and will probably watch more, as my wife and I enjoy British mysteries a lot.

The stories are short (compared to the movie length episodes of Midsomer Murders, Inspector Lynley, or Morse) and the leads have no direct criminal investigative link, so they have to "run into" the crimes. Both of these issues give the show a "Murder, She Wrote" feel. The linkage of the characters to the crimes seems forced, and with a short program, often the clues are slammed into your face, as if there was a red light on your TV set to tell you that "this was a clue!" The leads are both very well done, charismatic and interesting. The episodic characters have, so far, been well thought out and have solid and distinct personalities, not always easy to so in a shorter show.

In the end, it is a lightweight series, but fun. It will not be my first choice for cozy mysteries for my wife and I to watch, but it is decent filler between while we take a break from other series.

Absolute rubbish
recklessluke9 October 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This show makes absolutely no sense. Every week, two ladies go to an estate to do some gardening, and every week without fail, they somehow stumble upon a murder. Because everyone who owns a big house with a large garden is involved in a murder, right? But even if they did somehow happen to stumble upon murder after murder, wouldn't the smart thing to do be to tell the police? You know, the people who can actually do something about it... But every week, these two fools go around, polluting evidence, committing crimes of their own, and, in some cases, causing more murders. Once they do miraculously solve the murders, there is no way the murderer could ever be convicted. All the evidence has been sabotaged. And you'd think people who are covering up murders would think not to hire these two, wouldn't you? Yay! We've solved the murder! Now like every other week, let's go and confront the murderer ourselves and, with no back-up, tell them that we know about it. There is no way we could get ourselves into any danger, is there? Rosemary and Thyme is one of the worst shows on television, and certainly the most ridiculous.

Murder with a deeper plot
dans117123 August 2005
Okay, so Rosemary and Thyme won't be featured with latest edition of brain busters, but the show isn't intended that way. With such seasoned veterans as it's main stars, both ladies never disappoint. With a touch of warmth, Rosemary & Thyme rate with the staples from Agatha Christie and Dorothy L. Sayers. While the mysteries may not be as involved, both ladies help work through the mystery, while making you feel as part of the team. With this show, I have to say you never are left wondering about the obvious clue you missed, because you experience everything with them as they experience it. There's no hidden brother's cousin's sister who arrives five minutes before the murder and leaves and is discovered at the end. The viewer is treated to background mini-dramas of both character's past relationships and lives as they delve in the murder afoot. This series is definitely worth watching and in my opinion worth buying.

I Love, Love, Love this Series
momosherry2 March 2007
Most of the reviewers here said everything that I could and would say about this series, so I won't be repetitious. I would like to add that I am a strong admirer of most TV shows and movies which emanate from the UK. I don't know why, but they almost always have "meat" to them; and the comedy series are The Best. As for Rosemary & Thyme, I look forward to this show each week--it is like settling down with a good book, a warm afghan and a great cup of tea. I really do love this series; Pam and Felicity are superb in their roles. They make me feel as though I wish they were friends of mine! The locations, too, are just breathtaking.

The Best Series Ever
jfn0076 April 2011
I purchased this series on a lark, and I am so pleased that I did. I wish there were 100 more episodes in the series. The lead actresses are perfectly cast. I love most of the English series, but this one is far better than even Poirot.

Felicity Kendal and Pam Ferris are perfect in their roles. While watching the episodes, one comes away with the feeling that these two stars actually enjoyed one another, and they seemed to thoroughly enjoy making the series.

Too bad excellent series get canceled while the plethora of lousy shows seem to go on forever.

Enjoyed every minute!
hmlphoenix11 January 2009
This is a wonderful show with two great actresses. The show is clean, no guts and gore, and the scenery is spectacular. Not all episodes take place just in the UK. Some episodes are shot in Spain and Italy with equally spectacular scenery. I would recommend watching the first episode to start, simply to establish the relationship between the two women and to learn their backgrounds. In each episode you can learn a little about gardening, have a laugh, and enjoy a decent mystery. If you are a fan of British mysteries and want to try something without the swearing, violence, and sex that you find in other TV shows, I would strongly recommend Rosemary & Thyme. I wish they would make more, I would buy them in a heartbeat.

Delightful Marple clones lead us on the garden path.
catuus9 March 2008
It's well known that Brits generally do murder better than Yanks (or anyone else, for that matter). This trend started with Conan Doyle and continues right down to the present moment. Part of the reason for this is that Brit mysteries are genteel and intelligent. Yank mysteries are often written as if the main audience consists of cave men. Which is, alas, all too true. Even so, the Brit example is starting to sink in on this side of the pond. Virtually all of the main characters in superb series such as "Bones" and "Numbers" consist of nerds who actually use 3- and 4-syllables (and bigger) words. They also omit gratuitous violence (tiresome) and profanity (even more tiresome). Readers may also recall the spectacular success of "Murder She Wrote", set among the rural beauty of the Murder Capital of New England, Cabot Cove. Genteel, engaging, beautifully filmed, this was everything a good mystery ought to be. If you actually like urban grunge and gritty plotting, but want something from the Brits in that line, there's always Helen Mirren's "Prime Suspect". This is really good grunge and grit, especially if you want Brit quality instead of slipshod Yank stuff that uses gratuitous violence to distract you from the vapidity of what you're watching.

The problem is that good Brit mysteries outnumber Yank ones as the Chinese outnumber the Brits. This first decade of the 21st Century is no exception. From 2003 to 2007 we were treated to the wonderful "Rosemary and Thyme". All indications are that after 3 seasons (03, 04, 06/07) and 2 specials (04, 05), R&T are through. Well, we still have the long-running "Midsomer Murders" and the more recent "The Last Detective".

Rosemary Boxer (played wonderfully by Felicity Kendal) and Laura Thyme (played even better if possible by Pam Ferris) meet by chance as the latter's husband is deserting her. They go into business as professional gardeners and go about (mostly) rebuilding decrepit plantings. Lo and behold, very shortly they have a body in their garden. Unlike the Midsomer people, the R&T people spread the wealth of death around, taking their characters to beautiful places in England, France, Italy, and Spain. The gardens are often spectacular, and even if not (one episode involves a lawn; another, a grape grove), there is usually a beautiful and/or interesting building to compensate. What we don't get is the American favorite, (ugh!) urban grunge.

The mysteries themselves are all to brief – all episodes but 2 longer ones are only 48 minutes (as opposed to, say, 100 for Midsomer). In the beginning the girls don't solve the murder so much as they flush the guilty party into the waiting arms of the police. Mostly, however, they work out whodunit. These are good little conundrums, but it would be nice if they had more time in which to get worked out.

The scripts are clever and witty, informed by an insidious sense of humor. They're full of hilarious throwaway quips and verbal exchanges. This tendency reaches its height in the last episode in the set (the 2005 special), "The Cup of Silence". Here we get an actual black-out skit, á la Ernie Kovacs, which we should call "The Donkey Shop". It proceeds from the outré premise that somebody would actually try to make a go of a gift shop that sells nothing but donkey-related items. This builds in an exchange right out of Monty Python that leads to one of the most wonderful puns I've ever heard.

Besides, any series that dares to have one of its characters quote the immortal limerick, "While Titian was mixing rose madder", can do no wrong.

OK. Tiziano (Titian) Tecelli (1477-1571!) was a great artist. Despite its name, rose madder (root of the plant of the same name) is a brilliant red, often referred to a "true" red. OK, I had to look up the dates.

Aside from the witty scripts, the acting is on a par with them. There are several talented guest stars, including the brilliant Phyllida Law. One of the stars is a gizmo – that used to steam the grape groves in "Cup of Silence". Bless us, holy Rube Goldberg!! R&T comes on 9 DVDs in a compact case. The discs are just a little difficult to remove. The aspect is 16x9. Typical of Brit programs (and this is a serious flaw), there are no subtitles. One of the "special features" actually is special. The first DVD for each season (or "series", as the Brits refer to it) contains a featurette on the locations used for that season. These are informative and have some beautiful footage. The rest is silence (of which, as previously noted, you can get a whole cup with the last disc).

Note on the lack of subtitles: luckily, the actors' diction is particularly precise and clear overall. Subtitles are not quite the necessity they normally are, although people who don't hear well, or at all, will find this lack damn inconsiderate.

As you might have figured, I highly recommend this collection. It will give you 18 hours of viewing pleasure at a cost only a couple of inches of shelf space.

Green Fingered Friends
ygwerin110 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This is a show that it's taken me a while to get around to bothering with, and I have now seen a few episodes of it.

It's a lightweight fluff of a show OK for whiling away, the occasional hour on the box.

I like both Felicity Kendall and Pam Ferris in anything I have seen them, in and they make a good team. Such that I am surprised they, haven't been in anything else together.

I enjoyed seeing Felicity Kendall in a recent episode seeing her driving, a vehicular contraption on an allotment clearing the weeds. She reminded me of her character Barbara Good, driving the family vehicle around the parish.

A sweet innocence and charm to Rosemary and Thyme
safenoe31 August 2016
Warning: Spoilers
There's a sweet innocence and charm to Rosemary and Thyme. I hadn't heard of Rosemary and Thyme until I stumbled upon it when flicking through the TV guide and I was immediately hooked. Maybe it's the calming atmosphere of the European gardens (yes, the UK is part of Europe) that our two lead characters (Felicity Kendall and Pam Ferris) work in and at the same time solve a murder per episode.

But it's more than the murders that makes this series endearing. It's the rapport between the two gardeners cum detectives. This series was made in the 2000s and we don't smirk or suggest innuendos etc when Rosemary and Thyme without any fuss share a bedroom when they're on assignment (they do sleep in separate single beds just in case you're wondering) and talk about the murder case and life in general.

I really wish Rosemary and Thyme can be rebooted. It deserves more seasons. I mean, if Family Guy can be rebooted, what about Rosemary and Thyme?

Nice little British series to fill sone 'time'
catnapbc21 June 2023
Despite the fairly predictable outcomes and easy-going 'crime-fighting' by the two mature women, this series gives satisfying entertainment and won't result in nightmares. The acting, such as it is, is not exactly top-notch stuff, but the main protagonists have a nice chemistry and relationship that exudes authenticity. The main attraction of this light-weight series is the scenery-the beautiful houses, buildings, villages and above all, wonderful and interesting gardens. It's a relief to watch a show that stars two older women and is devoid of swearing, gratuitous violence and shows lots of gorgeous countryside. On the same vein as Miss Marple, but not so complex. A pleasant way to spend an evening or if you need a break from 'real' crime shows. And another plus is the lovely, yet not intrusive, background music. These days it's often more important than the characters or storyline. Put your feet up and enjoy.

The Best British Mystery So Far
Last_Starfighter18 January 2007
This is one of my absolute favorite mystery shows!!!

I love the idea of it, the gardening aspect thrown in with the crime solving aspect....sort of reminiscent of The Brother Cadfael Mysteries (Also GREAT mysteries) the reason being that their skill in gardening and their knowledge of the different plant life sometimes leads to the solving of the mysteries. The story lines are excellent, and the character development is AMAZINGLY adequate, especially amazing because they only have forty-five minutes to convey it. Felicity Kendall and Pam Ferris are SO FUNNY!!! They seem like they are having such a good time and portray close friends so well! That's probably the main reason why I love it, they are both SO FUNNY! Definitely worth every minute of your time!!! I was really REALLY disappointed to learn that supposedly it has been canceled by it's British network, which I think is a big mistake!!! I am hoping that another network might pick it up. So all in all EXTREMELY enjoyable! Good Mysteries! Good laughs....corny line I know...but it's true!:)

A pleasant diversion
Tomlonso7 November 2008
Rosemary Boxer and Laura Thyme live in that never-never world of TV mysteries also inhabited by Jessica Fletcher. Like that famous middle-age woman, these two women seem surrounded by friends and relatives who are bound and determined to kill each other off. Should Rosemary and Laura send you a party invitation, it might be best to decline.

There is only a passing resemblance to real murder investigations here. Instead, we are lead blithely along with the two gardeners as they try to work out the latest puzzle. So if they trample over the evidence that a real investigation would need, or if the villains from time to time say "You FOOLl!!" to their inept henchmen (two words probably never uttered by Tony Soprano) it's O.K.

To watch this show expecting a treatise on forensics is to miss the point. This is produced by Brian Eastman, not Dick Wolf

They get away with everything - they should be arrested!
mr-lister1 August 2007
Thank God this has not been renewed by ITV.

This series, while popular (God knows why) has a very simple - 'Look I've found another body behind the flowers/bushes/trees/wherever they are working - for the sixteenth time this series' plot. The dialogue is so simple it's as though this has been written for children - talking down to the viewer and explaining every plot point.

They just 'happen' to be around when someone does something out the ordinary - and no-one notices them.

Every time they look into and investigate someone's murder, they get in the way of everyone else - messing up the lives of all - including those completely innocent.

They break and enter into people's homes, stealing items and evidence (even firearms) being nosey and getting into people's lives, spying on them and going through their stuff. They never apologise, never get caught or arrested (and if they do they can talk their way out of it, even though another character who does the same gets put in prison!!!).

They always come up trumps. Now I know that this is an easy going series, but I think that realistically this should not have made it past the first few episodes! Put simply, it's unrealistic.

I think that they have found enough bodies in the undergrowth both here and on the Continent (where they are every other week), so I do hope it never comes back.

ITV should get some action on the screen instead of all the years of humdrum - 'someone's been murdered at the village fair - again' type series.
