For the third week of February, Scream Factory is delivering a double dose of terror in their releases of the recent indie horror flick Animal as well as the 1989 cult classic adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera starring Robert Englund and Jill Schoelen.
Magnolia is also bringing us V/H/S: Viral, the latest edition of their popular horror anthology series, home on Blu-ray, DVD and VHS (which is awesome!), and indie genre fans have tons of new titles to look forward to. There are three kinds of sequels in this world. The sequel that continues the story of the previous installment in a series, the sequel that has fuck-all to do with the original and creates a completely new story in lieu of the absolutely workable earlier installment and sequels in name only. So I ask you where a movie like Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers fits in? Sure it continues the original story with its focal point still on Angela Baker though we now refer to her as Angela Johnson, but if you mean to tell me that Michael A. Simpson created a continuation story from the original Robert Hiltzik classic as anything more than a way to get exploitable elements on screen then you might not have seen Return to Sleepaway Camp, a true continuation of Hiltzik’s vision. When I watch Sleepaway Camp II I think of it as...

This is another Blu-ray release, that I wish existed a year prior. Last summer, we recorded a retrospective podcast series, covering the entirety of the Sleepaway Camp series, and could have really used a loaded, Uncut Blu-ray release of the first film. We made due with what was available, though, and now I can revisit Scream Factory’s new Collector’s Edition Blu-ray release of the film, with the image of the DVD still fresh in my mind for comparison. If you are interested in our retrospective look at the series in its entirety, you can check that out here. I’ve seen this movie at least a dozen times, and as many problems as it has, it still manages to entertain me just as much, each new visit. I know the ending is coming, and I know what to expect, but it still has that same impact it had on me as a kid.

Robert Hiltzik's entire movie career has basically been in telling one story, that of Sleepaway Camp. Hiltzik wrote and directed the original, as well as Return to Sleepaway Camp. So who better to discuss Sleepaway Camp's move to Blu-ray from Scream Factory on May 27 than Robert Hiltzik himself.
Hiltzik recently sat down with Dread Central to talk about some interesting aspects of this horror staple, which was released in 1983. "I was in graduate film school at the time and I wanted to do my own film," Hiltzik said, when discussing the origins of the movie. "I wanted to figure out what would get me into the marketplace the easiest. The path of least resistance. I figured dramas and comedies would be very subjective, but everyone likes a good horror film. And I figured shooting a horror film in one location would keep the budget modest. So I thought...

Well, 2013 has come and gone and it was a pretty darned good year for horror, both at the theaters, as well as on TV with more horror television programming than ever and the exponential growth of VOD releases. How 'bout we take a look at feature length movies due out this year? Get your calendars out and let's break down some of the most anticipated horror titles arriving later this year.
Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones (Jan 3rd)

The flavor of bile is unmistakable. There just isn’t anything that tastes quite like it. And you know it when it comes on: The belly rumbles, the esophagus lurches within, and you battle back the slimy liquid that threatens to spew forth from your lips.
It’s a nasty experience. We all hate that sensation so we’re taking measures at Dread Central to help prevent such a situation from occurring.
See, there are horror sequels out there that are so horrifically bad they somehow trigger something in our internal systems... and the belly begins to rumble. We wish you no stomach troubles here, and we certainly wish the taste of bile on no man or woman. So we’re going to provide you with a list of sequels to avoid at all costs because if you check these out, you’ll be searching for the toothbrush in no time!

One of the big sources of excitement within the horror community these last couple weeks has been the persistent rumors of a long-awaited sequel to Beetlejuice, with both Michael Keaton and Winona Rider expressing their interest in being a part of the ghost with the most’s return to the big screen. Will it ever actually happen? Only time will tell. But if it does, it’ll be a follow-up over 25 years in the making – a long time to wait for a sequel, don’t ya think?!

As Bruce Campbell proved to us all last week when he debunked the previous week’s announcement that Army of Darkness 2 was on its way, news of impending horror sequels should probably always be taken with a grain of salt. Countless sequels have been announced over the years, only to drop off the face of the earth shortly thereafter. It’s just the nature of the game, in a fickle business like the movie-making one.
Back in August we took a look at ten of those sequels that we’re still waiting to see, and today I’ve got ten more for ya. They were all planned, they were all announced, but none of them ever actually happened!

Acknowledging our collective thirst for blood and ’80s nostalgia, producer Jeff Katz has acquired the rights to the 1983 cult classic Sleepaway Camp in order to reboot the summertime slasher for a whole new generation of awful teens. Deadline reports that Katz wants to “echo its legacy and the psychosexual elements that made the first pic such a memorable cult favorite,” while moving the story to a modern setting. So basically the same movie, but with different hair and texting. Not that anything should necessarily change about the story. Sleepaway Camp is a mercilessly bloody and brutal revenge flick that made Camp Crystal Lake look like it was for Cub Scouts. The film has spawned several direct-to-videos and one true sequel, 2008′s Return to Sleepaway Camp (also direct-to-video), so the franchise is in need of a good scrubbing. With original writer/director Robert Hiltzik, producer Michelle Tatosian and actress Felissa Rose, who...

Last weekend marked the long awaited theatrical release of You're Next, a home invasion horror flick that premiered on the festival circuit just about a full two years ago, way back in September of 2011. (Check out our review here.) Is it uncommon for such a highly praised film to take so long to enter our lives? Well, not exactly. Today we take a look back at ten other horror films that also spent a lot of time on the shelf before getting released, the majority of which ended up becoming big time fan favorites. Go figure! Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer Though widely regarded as one of the best and most disturbing horror films the genre has ever seen, John McNaughton's real-life-inspired Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer was made in 1986 but not released until 1990. Several factors contributed to the delay, but it was the film's extremely graphic content that was largely responsible,...

One of the things I love so much about the horror genre is just how many sub-sections there are to it. I mean, if you were so inclined or just in the mood, you could focus your movie viewing leisure time specifically to the supernatural, or to zombies, or perhaps werewolves & vampires, or monsters (oh my)! But for me, I personally like to get seasonal with my horror movies. And so with summer officially upon us, this is the time of year I break out all of my favorite (and obscure) summer slasher horror! We figured we’d give you 6 recommendations so you could get into the summer slasher spirit as well; some of which are well known, some obscure and some recent ones that just warrant another look in the off chance you missed ‘em upon their initial release. Its time to take another look at a fading gem that could benefit from a contemporary reimagining. This time on deck weve got Robert Hiltziks oftdisregarded slasher Sleepaway Camp We dont need a return to the Return to Sleepaway Camp we need a quality reboot if for no other reason than to iron out the pronounced wrinkles that hindered the original. Turning Camp Arawak into a tight reasonable unit that plays host to say 1014 year olds with a solid half dozen twentysomething counselors will instantly lend a measure of believability to the film thats evaded the franchise up to this point.

With Drive-In Massacre producer Brandon Sites promised sex, drugs, a drive-in and, of course, a massacre. He then went on to ponder "what else could you want?". ...well, there was one thing missing. How about a little rock n' roll? Jonathan Tiersten, who so memorably starred in Sleepaway Camp, Return to Sleepaway Camp & The Perfect House, has just signed on to star in Drive-In Massacre.
Jonathan Tiersten is able to convey that bad boy sensibility effortlessly. There is something inherently exciting and dangerous about that kind of persona on screen which seamlessly lends itself to a slasher. He was that missing element that will bring it all together in Drive-In Massacre.
Drive-In Massacre is about a cursed drive-in movie theater. A group of college aged kids who ignored all the signs. Now, one fateful night he will make them pay for their indiscretions.... in Blood!!!

Two weeks ago, it was announced that Cabin in the Woods, the horror flick produced and co-written by Joss Whedon, would finally get a release date after years of sitting on the shelf. It's set for April 2012. Then yesterday, in even more surprising news, a release date was miraculously set for Margaret, Kenneth Lonergan's long-delayed follow-up to You Can Count on Me. That film, which stars Matt Damon and Anna Paquin, has been delayed now for six years, mostly because Lonergan couldn't finish the edit, which led to a lot of squabbles with the studio. Those two movies -- along with Tucker and Dale vs. Evil, which also recently received a release date -- were among the list of the Six Highly Anticipated Films You May Never Get to See, which we ran back in May.
However, long delays have rarely been kind to a film's box-office prospects, and if history is any indication,...

The Perfect House An all new trailer (seen below, after the jump) showing footage previously not seen in the first teaser trailer for "The Perfect House" has just been released. The Perfect House is noteworthy for starring legendary scream queen Felissa Rose of Sleepaway Camp & Return to Sleepaway Camp along with one of her co-stars from that franchise, Jonathan Tiersten. What's interesting this time around is that Felissa Rose is the victim while Jonathan Tiersten plays a psychopathic killer.

Jonathan Tiersten who returns to the horror genre, after a lengthy absence, takes on the most difficult role of his career as John Doesy, a killer who brings in a different victim each week to torture, humiliate and finally kill. Silent Night, Zombie Night Legendary scream queen Felissa Rose, who so memorably played Angela in both Sleepaway Camp & Return to Sleepaway Camp, tackles the zombie sub-genre of horror as a gun totting bad-ass who blows out some zombie brains in Sean Cain's (Someone's Knocking at the Door) Silent Night, Zombie Night. The film, which co-stars Vernon Wells (Mad Max 2), Lew Temple (The Devil's Rejects), Andy Hopper (Before Turning the Gun) & Jack Forcinito (Breath of Hate), premiered back around Christmas of 2009. Now it appears that Silent Night, Zombie Night has distribution and will be making its way to DVD, finally!
Coming to DVD on Sept 20th in the Us and Canada, Silent Night, Zombie Night takes place a week before Christmas as a viral outbreak turns the citizens of Los Angeles into the walking dead. On the brink of severing ties with both his wife and longtime partner, L.

Welcome back, dear readers! Sorry about the delay as this writer’s heading off to cover SXSW for the next couple of days. But so far we’ve had quite the journey as we’ve looked back at the first 15 films in our countdown of the 25 milestones that shaped the world of independent horror.
Today we start in 1983 and kick things off with a true shocker!
1983- Horror Audiences Take a Shocking Trip to Sleepaway Camp:
Right after he graduated film school, writer/director Robert Hiltzik set out to make an unusual horror movie based on the success of the slasher films that had been hitting multiplexes over the previous several years. Hiltzik decided he was ready to leave his impression on the horror genre and independently raised $350,000 for Sleepaway Camp, a slasher flick inspired by his own experiences at summer camp as a kid (in fact, he actually...

Jonathan Tiersten was the foul mouthed, angry little Ricky in the original Sleepaway Camp co-starring Felissa Rose and directed by Robert Hilzik, a role that cemented his status as an icon in the horror genre. However, afterwards he disappeared pretty much to not be heard of again until the new millennium when Sleepaway Camp began experiencing a resurgence and the film merited a sequel entitled Return To Sleepaway Camp, directed yet again by Robert Hilzik. However, his acting appearances still remained infrequent. However, he returns to the horror genre with The Perfect House, an anthology film. Here's what Jonathan Tiersten had to say about The Perfect House, Felissa Rose, and so much more.
So who is Jonathan Tiersten and what are you all about?
Wow, what a question. I guess there are a million different ways to answer this and they would all be bullshit. I guess I am a work in progress.

It’s that time of year again, kids. Dread Central’s 2010 Horror at the Oscars coverage. Horror was indeed present this year and in black-tie. While Roger Corman and Lauren Bacall were honored a few months back at the Governor’s Award Ceremony, it was an unexpected delight to see Corman, recipient of the lifetime achievement Oscar, enjoy a standing ovation on national television.
I was, however, very disappointed that neither of them were allowed to speak. Roger Corman’s contributions to modern cinema are too vast for him to just stand up and wave. James Cameron was one of many Corman acolytes present, and his nomination speaks to Corman’s tremendous legacy. On the Terminator DVD Cameron mentions, "I trained at the Roger Corman Film School.” Jonathan Demme, Martin Scorsese, and Francis Ford Coppola, among many others, were also former students.

An impaled lovely from Evil Dead Trap–a classic Japanese slasher; Friday the 13th Part II and Twitch of the Death Nerve get impaled in more ways than one; When a Killer Calls gets it in the mouth; Return to Sleepaway Camp is the fricken pisser and pops some major wood; Everyone needs a hammer-mallet-thingy as big as that guy in Blood of the Vampire. Director/producer Sean Cain (pictured left) sent over a few new exclusive photos (see them below) from his shocker feature Breath Of Hate, with the news that the movie’s official website has gone live. “We are deep into postproduction” on the film, Cain tells us.
The site, which you can check out here, includes scene stills and behind-the-scenes pics, video blogs, cast/crew info and more. Breath Of Hate, scripted by Wes Laurie (also a producer on the project), stars Lauren Walsh as Love, an escort who goes on one last job before leaving the business and becomes the captive of three escaped mental patients. The cast also includes The Hills Have Eyes’ Ezra Buzzington, The Tripper’s Jason Mewes, The Ghouls’ Timothy Muskatell, Jack Forcinito, Monique Parent, Ricardo Gray and Return To Sleepaway Camp’s Felissa Rose; you can track back through our previous coverage of the movie starting here.

Fango got the scoop from director Sean Cain that Jason Mewes has joined the cast of his latest feature, Breath Of Hate (which we last reported on here). “His character is a gamer nerd who falls for a escort,” Cain says; that escort is the film’s heroine, who is terrorized by three homicidal asylum escapees on her last job.
“It’s through his love that he brings her back from being a walking suicide,” Cain continues. “Audiences know Jason as the foul-mouthed Jay in the Kevin Smith movies, but he’s got a sweet side that’s the perfect counterpoint to the darkness in our story.” Mewes’ Jay also made an appearance in Scream 3, and the actor’s genre credits additionally include R.S.V.P., Feast, The Tripper, Netherbeast Incorporated, Bitten and the upcoming Silent But Deadly. I guess this entry is going to get kind of spoilerish, but sadly (not in a sarcastic way, this is actually really sad), Return To Sleepaway Camp isn’t much worth your time anyway, so eh, read on.
Sleepaway Camp is rad. It’s that simple. It’s a modern slasher classic that I had no hesitation in returning to. It’s a case of, “I’m not sure what I want to watch, I’ll just throw on Sleepaway Camp,” or “Oh my God! You’ve never seen Sleepaway Camp?? We’re watching it right now!” How many times have you met someone who’s never seen it and then just got so excited at the prospect of making them see it and staring at their face at the end? It just contains a lot of nostalgic fun, and as far as late nights and friends go, it’s a good flick to love.

Afm is always my favorite time of the film reporting year. There's always so much information about cool genre movies flying at you from every direction that it's literally a full time job just keeping up with what's going on. It's for that reason that we here at Qe decided to hold off on a lot of our favorite news and make one big giant mega post with all the stuff that had us talking behind the scenes.
To avoid cluttering up the homepage I've decided to bury all the images and information after the break so click through and feast on the many goodies beyond.
I've chosen to start with Neuromancer not for the quality of the news but for how high the film currently ranks on my most anticipated. And not because I have any real fondness for Hayden Christensen or James Kahn, but just because it's been...

Within the first 10 minutes of Return To Sleepaway Camp, a character is introduced who is so gratuitous and ridiculous, and such a transparent ruse, that you can’t help but think, is writer/director Robert Hiltzik kidding? Is he intending to celebrate the 25th anniversary of his cult slasher flick with a sendup of his own creation?
Actually, as revealed in the extras on Magnet/Magnolia’s DVD, Return was produced 20 years after the original, and has taken an extra half-decade to make it to general release. Watching the movie, it’s not hard to see why. It would be nice to say that Return To Sleepaway Camp at least succeeds in delivering a gory/campy good time, but instead it’s an 86-minute endurance test that quickly wears out its welcome by taking forever to get to the murder spree that is its raison d’etre, in the meantime...

Inside you'll find the DVD cover art for the long, long delayed Return To Sleepaway Camp, which is finally arriving on DVD October 14th from Magnet Releasing. It's summer camp as usual at Camp Manabe where the kids torment each other for fun while the underpaid camp staff provide as little supervision as possible. Greedy camp owner Frank (Vincent Pastore) and junior partner Ronnie (Paul DeAngelo) do their best to keep everyone in line, but something sinister is about to put a slash in the roster. When campers and staff mysteriously begin disappearing and turning into gruesome corpses, paranoid Ronnie can't shake the memory of a series of grisly murders that took place at Camp Arawak where he worked 2 decades ago. Has a "ghost" from the past come back to haunt him?...
