Teenager Meg Griffin isn’t only an afterthought to her family (cartoon dad Peter regularly forgets about her existence even when she’s standing right next to him), the character also didn’t appear in the 1995 student film from which Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane developed his hit animated comedy.
MacFarlane made animated short ‘The Life of Larry’ while studying at the Rhode Island School of Design in the 1990s. It featured “loveable but tactless lower middle class” dad Larry, his supportive wife Lois, their heavy-set blonde, baseball-cap-wearing son Milt, and “incisive, cynical” talking dog named Steve, plus all the cutaway gags and pop culture parodies for which Family Guy would become famous… but no super-intelligent baby, and no butt-of-every-joke teenage daughter Meg.
One-off 1997 sequel ‘Larry and Steve’ lost Larry’s wife and son to focus on the talking dog, but by the time of the seven-minute 1998 Family Guy pilot,...

"Star Trek: Lower Decks," currently in its third season, took its name from an episode of "Star Trek: The Next Generation." Originally airing on February 7, 1994, The NextGen "Lower Decks" introduced several lower-ranking officers, and depicted what life on the Enterprise-d would look like from their perspective. Trekkies could easily see what space adventures were like for Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden), but few knew the inner life of Nurse Ogawa (Patti Yasutake). Also in the episode were a very Boimler-like Ensign Lavelle (Dan Gauthier), the very Tendi-like Ensign Sito (Shannon Fill), and the Vulcan, Ensign Taurik. Bruce Beatty played a character named Ben who was a mere civilian.
The point of "Lower Decks" was to show that lower-ranking officers aren't made savvy to the plots and machinations on the bridge. They don't get to sit in the conference room with the senior staff. They only have to follow orders. Although...

Fox has given a put pilot commitment to an untitled multi-camera comedy written and executive produced by Silverstein and Jeser and produced by 20th TV. Loosely based on Silverstein and Jeser’s shared childhood experiences, the project centers around brothers from a multi-racial family who, when reunited in their hometown as adults, quickly find that their past as troublemakers (and occasionally a**holes) is about to finally catch up with them. Silverstein and Jeser both grew up in New Jersey and met in high school. They landed their first gig in 1998, writing and producing segments for Comedy Central’s The Man Show. The two went on to create the network’s animated comedy Drawn Together and also have worked on 3rd Rock From The Sun,...

After much speculation, it seems that we now know the identity of Marvel's secret film that's been long targeted for a May 2014 release. And it's not "Ant-Man," or "Black Panther," or "Runaways," or "Doctor Strange." It's "Guardians Of The Galaxy," the cosmic adventure that was a favorite in the 1970s before being revived recently.
Originally, the Guardians were a group of superpowered individuals from an alternate timeline in the 31st century, including human astronaut Vance Astro, humanoid crystal Martinex T'Naga, soldier from Jupiter Charlie-27, and Yonda Udonta, a savage from Beta Centurai. The team (whose lineup would have other shifts), battled a number of adversaries, including alien race the Badoon, and teamed up with The Avengers before the series was cancelled in the 1990s. A more recent 2008 update relaunched the property with a new lineup, including long-time characters like Star-Lord, Adam Warlock, Gamora and Quasar, and it's been suggested that...

Exclusive: After almost two years at the helm of Ellen DeGeneres’ A Very Good Production, Lauren Corrao is leaving the company, which has a multi-faceted deal with Warner Bros TV Group spanning several divisions. The parting of the ways was a mutual decision — Corrao has opted to move on, and DeGeneres is now looking for a new executive. Corrao joined A Very Good Production in fall 2010 as its first development executive in the company’s buildup into a full-fledged production entity. During her tenure, A Very Good Production landed a pilot order for comedy The Smart One at ABC this past season. Corrao, former Comedy Central president of original programming and development, left the cable network at the end of 2009 to return to producing. During her seven-year stint at Comedy Central, she oversaw The Sarah Silverman Program, Chappelle’s Show, Drawn Together, Reno 911! and Important Things With Demetri Martin. Before that,...

Get ready for Harold & Kumar on the small screen. Deadline reports that Adult Swim has announced its full slate of shows, which includes a mix of seven animated and live-action pilots. One of those shows is an animated series based on the popular movie franchise. Lionsgate, which produces the movies, brought the animated series to the market in November. The series will have original writers Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg write and produce the show. What makes the show even more interesting is that John Cho and Kal Penn are on board to voice their characters and produce.
Below is the full slate of shows:
Untitled Animated Harold & Kumar Project (In Development) – An animated version of the eponymous blockbuster stoner comedy series. Produced by Lionsgate.
Rick & Morty – A genius inventor grandfather and his less than genius grandson, and the journeys in life they share. From Dan Harmon (Community) and Justin Roiland.

First poster for Disney's Wreck-It Ralph, starring John C. Reilly, Jane Lynch, Jack McBrayer, Sarah Silverman, Jamie Elman. In the movie, Wreck-It Ralph (voice of Reilly) longs to be as beloved as his game's perfect Good Guy, Fix-It Felix (voice of McBrayer). Problem is, nobody loves a Bad Guy. But they do love heroes... so when a modern, first-person shooter game arrives featuring tough-as-nails Sergeant Calhoun (voice of Lynch), Ralph sees it as his ticket to heroism and happiness. He sneaks into the game with a simple plan -- win a medal -- but soon wrecks everything, and accidentally unleashes a deadly enemy that threatens every game in the arcade. Ralph's only hope? Vanellope von Schweetz (voice of Silverman), a young troublemaking "glitch" from a candy-coated cart racing game who might just be the one to teach Ralph what it means to be a Good Guy. Rachid Bouchareb's "London River" is simultaneously quaint and far-reaching, a tension the filmmaker never fully resolves. Set in the immediate aftermath of the 2005 London bombings, the movie follows a pair of single parents -- a middle-class widow, Elisabeth (Brenda Blethyn), who heads from her country home to the city in search of her grown daughter; and a soft-spoken African man, Ousmane (the late Sotigui Kouyaté), who seeks his estranged son. Drawn together in search of their missing children, they embark on a mission to follow their childrens' footsteps. The outcome of their investigation matters less than the cultural and ethnic tensions between them. While the conflicts are rooted in credibility, the story feels simplistic. A political filmmaker to the core (see the Algerian war drama "Days of Glory" for a better example of his strengths), Bouchareb litters news coverage throughout "London River," but he focuses soley on the...

Rainer Werner Fassbinder's newly restored Despair (1978) "was one of the hottest tickets in the Classics sidebar" in Cannes this year, notes Dennis Lim in his Los Angeles Times review of the new DVD out from Olive Films, which has also issued Fassbinder's I Only Want You to Love Me (1976). "The relative obscurity of Despair is surprising given its pedigree. It's based on a Vladimir Nabokov novel, adapted by Tom Stoppard, and starring the English actor Dirk Bogarde. Nabokov's story of a Russian émigré, written in the 30s, takes place in Prague. Fassbinder changed the setting to early-30s Berlin, teetering on the abyss of the Third Reich…. Despair is perhaps the most explicit elaboration of one of Fassbinder's recurring themes: the alienation of someone who not only 'stands outside himself,' as Hermann [Bogarde] puts it, but also wants to escape himself and indeed flee the trap of identity altogether.

Sports and comedy have always had a tricky relationship for a number of reasons, and no real dominant or even successful “sports comedy show” has ever emerged from the vast television ether. This isn’t for lack of trying (Ed Note: I cannot believe that website is still up), but is more a function of sports fandom and comedy nerdery not overlapping often enough to create a viable television niche for the combination. As a result, sports fans — an already largely-insatiable cross-section of the populace — have been forced to make due with television’s occasional substandard attempts to marry sports and humor, with highly cancellable results. Yes, this sentence was another excuse to link the Mohr Sports site again. Timeless Keith Van Horn joke though! This year, Onion Sportsdome has provided an extremely welcome exception to the rule — it’s hilarious, the production values are high, and it’s legitimately satirical,...

Grouplove are among the more affable bands to land in recent memory. Drawn together by a series of events that frankly sounds too weird to be fabricated, the five-piece coalesces beneath punchy vocals, tight harmonies, and youthful abandon. They are an “La band” but their story begins beneath the Brooklyn Bridge. The tale is best told by the band itself:
“Maybe it starts the night Hannah (Hooper) met Christian (Zucconi) at one of his acoustic shows in New York in the summer of 2008. Their connection was instantaneous and they ended up listening to tapes under the Brooklyn Bridge until the wee hours of the morning. Hannah had just been invited to an artist’s residency in the small village of Avdou, Crete and was set to leave in a week. She was worried that if she left she would never have contact with Christian again, so she invited him…and he said yes.

When you sit down to watch a movie about a homicidal telekinetic tire, you've made a certain decision about life and your filmwatching experience. If you expect realism, developed characters, a serious study in mise-en-scene, well, then you've clearly got a warped sense of reality and belong in retail hell, either folding ironic overpriced T-shirts or brewing overpriced beverages that have gone beyond the realm of coffee into some sort of hyper-milkshake. It's a movie. About a fucking tire. That kills people. With it's mind. But fortunately, writer-director Quentin Dupieux knows that. So what he's created with Rubber is such a meta experience that Charlie Kaufman would have to go into Doctor Who's head to find Sam Beckett and ask him to lead him into the dream snow fortress in the middle of Philip Seymour Hoffman's head when he was pretending to be John Malkovich. It's not just a film about a killer tire,...

Q: After seeing Blaine chase Kurt around the room in Glee’s “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” Christmas episode number, I said to my close friend/ex that I would "let Blaine chase me around that room for days on end," and his response was, "See, I'm more of the person who'd be doing the chasing." I'm 5' 9'' and 130 lbs, and more than one person has referred to me as a "twink" (a word which I find to be derogatory and demeaning). What confuses me is that my instinct to be chased by Blaine does not follow with him dominating me, but the complete opposite. I am always attracted to the most butch, athletic, tall, hyper-masculine guys around me because I want to ravish them. Is that weird?...

As we reported to you in August, The CW was looking to team up with DC Comics again in adapting another comic book character into a television series, following the success of exiting series, Smallville. This next series will center on Raven aka Rachel Roth. The network has tapped Diego Gutierrez (V) to executive produce and write the series.
The character of Raven was created by Marv Wolfman and George Perez. She is “the daughter of a human and a demon who has empath abilities” who can “teleport and control her ‘soul-self,’ which can fight physically, as well as act as Raven’s eyes and ears away from her body.”
This isn’t the first time Raven’s been on television. You might remember her voiced by Tara Strong (The Super Hero Squad Show, Drawn Together) on the animated series Teen Titans that aired on The CW from 2003 to 2006.
So what do you think?...

Director Per Fly's The Woman Who Dreamt Of A Man is about sex. Got your attention? Passion realised as sexual obsession, to be exact, but like all films trying to be serious about the reasons people lust for each other it's got any number of potential pitfalls to overcome. Imagine a chart from laughable (most of Zalman King's work) up to phenomenal (Shinya Tsukamoto's masterpiece A Snake of June). The Woman... ultimately lodges in the upper half of that scale, though it stops just about everywhere on the way.
The title is almost the entire premise - Karen (Sonja Richter), a successful fashion photographer, meets Maciek (Marcin Dorocinski), a lecturer the spitting image of the man she's had darkly erotic dreams about for some time. Tuesday night, hours before our start of Spirit Day, 19-year-old Corey Jackson hung himself. There’s no direct evidence of bullying of the gay Oakland University student, but let’s face it, we get bullied everyday just for being gay.
As evidence of that statement, I offer Maggie Gallagher’s editorial for the New York Post. She cites out of context “evidence” that marriage equality wouldn’t reduce the suicides, using Massachusetts as a sample. It hardly counts when that marriage isn’t valid when you cross the state line, Maggie. Or when newspapers think that there are two sides to this story that need to be aired. There is no opposing viewpoint to dead children.

The comedy juggernaut that is Adam Sandler's career carries on with his latest hit about a reunion of five childhood friends over a July 4th weekend. Drawn together by the death of their old basketball coach, the five fully grown men reconvene at a lake house where they spent their childhood summers with their respective broads in tow. And really that's about it - the film isn't so much written or directed but rather unfolds with a wearying inevitability. Rather than bother with any sort of plot (other than the rather pathetic central conceit that these middle aged men are still obsessively hanging on to a basketball victory that happened more than 30 years ago), character detail, or even much in the way of comedic set-pieces, instead the characters sit around making jokes about each other, which although not particularly funny seem to amuse everybody on screen to no end...

I've been editing AfterElton.com for nearly five years now and I have to say this has been one of the wildest weeks I've had in a long time, if not ever.
What do you mean this doesn't look like my avatar picture? Try squinting a little. More. More. A little More. Oh, **#% you!
It kicked off Sunday morning when I did a post about Betty White's hosting of Saturday Night Live, and especially about the Scared Straight sketch.
Sunday night not only saw Jordan and Dan Pious winning The Amazing Race, but an episode of The Family Guy that had emails flying in and comments being posted on the site before it had even aired on the west coast. When I realized it was the "Quagmire's Dad" episode, I remembered Seth MacFarlane had mentioned it to me when I interviewed him last January.

As episode stills from "Isobel" depict, Damon doesn't waste any time getting cozy (and shirtless) again with a former fling.
But those photos aren't what has The Vampire Diaries community buzzing today: The CW has released a new poster for May Sweeps that show Damon and Elena holding hands. The words scrawled over their bodies:
Drawn together. And not pulling away.
What might this mean for the future of their relationshop as season one winds down? Sound off about it in our Vampire Diaries forum!

The Gang’s Back Together Again…Drawn Together!! If you’re a fan of the show, that statement means something to you, as one of the characters was hated for always saying the title of the show in a sentence. Also if you’re a fan of the show you’ll like “The Drawn Together Movie: The Movie.” If you were grossed out, offended or just plain disgusted by the show, obviously this movie is not for you, but we should thank you for probably being one of the people who issued a complaint about the show with Comedy Central that lead to the show finally being cancelled. Thanks a lot! But we got a direct to DVD movie out of the deal. To quote Captain Hero, “Huuzaah!!” When Nix asked me to review this movie, my first response was, “Holy Crap! There’s a movie?” immediately followed by “Hell Yeah!

Far be it from me to harp on an animated series to want a second wind via direct-to-dvd movies. With the success stories of how Family Guy and Futurama got renewed after their DVD movies, you just know Drawn Together is hoping for a similar result. To be perfectly honest: it doesn’t deserve it, and for many reasons, only a few of them having anything to do with the movie itself. For starters, Family Guy and Futurama ended prematurely. The former got yanked because Fox’s execs didn’t quite understand its appeal and the latter got kicked around from one timeslot to the next, its ratings plummeted accordingly. Drawn Together? It started brilliantly and lambasted a ripe part of popular culture. It just couldn’t keep up the laughs. Quickly it devolved into a cheap string of dick and fart jokes and lost all of what made it great to start.
