The White House Plumbers (accidentally) took down the presidency, but can Woody Harrelson and Justin Theroux take down their Emmy competition? The “White House Plumbers” stars are both contending in Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actor, but only Harrelson is currently predicted to earn a nomination at the moment, sitting in fourth place, while Theroux is in ninth. If you’re predicting just one of them, you might want to reconsider that because this category is kinder to double noms than you might think.
Since 2000, there have been 10 projects that have fielded a pair of nominees in limited series/TV movie actor. And half of them hailed from HBO, home to “White House Plumbers” as well. In 2004, “Something the Lord Made” nabbed bids for Mos Def and Alan Rickman. Four years later, “Recount” stars Kevin Spacey and Tom Wilkinson faced off. He’s seen a lot. At Berlanti Prods., veteran programming executive David Madden served as executive producer of HBO Max hit “The Flight Attendant” as well as stalker romance “You.” As president at Fox Entertainment he helped launch “The Shield;” while overseeing programming at AMC Networks, his oversight included “The Walking Dead,” “Better Call Saul,” and “Killing Eve.” He even won an Emmy as executive producer for HBO’s 2004 TV movie “Something the Lord Made.” And so for his next act… he’s running an internet studio that believes that stories posted online by anyone could be made into the next hit.

Yasiin Bey, the musician formerly known as Mos Def, will portray jazz piano legend Thelonious Monk in the biopic “Thelonious,” which is slated to begin production in the summer of 2022. The project is being brought to the screen by Jupiter Rising Film and its co-founders, Alberto Marzan and Peter Lord Moreland.
Moreland will also write the screenplay for the film, which “will center around [Monk’s] struggles for musical success, mental illness and the spiritual love triangle between his wife Nellie and one of the world’s richest women, Nica Rothschild,” according to a statement.
“This role is one that requires great depth and a unique understanding of who and what Thelonious Monk was and how his lasting impact can still be heard throughout the music world today,” said Marzan. “The moment I met Yasiin, I knew we found our Thelonious. Years ago, screenwriter-producer Peter Lord Moreland watched Straight No Chaser, the landmark 1988 documentary on bebop pianist-composer Thelonious Monk. Thus began a near-obsessive fascination with the jazz legend that “was already triggered by one of my favorite jazz ballads of all time: ‘Round Midnight.’”
As his career progressed, Lord Moreland began researching the musician and started on a working script to document his life and career. “My entire life, I have been an artist, a person, and a thinker who seems to have an alternative view of creating, hearing, and seeing the world,...

“Black Mirror’s” loss could be HBO’s gain. After three straight Best TV Movie Emmy victories for various episodes and not meeting the new 75-minute runtime requirement, “Black Mirror” is forced to compete in drama this year, paving the way for HBO to claim its record-extending 22 win in the category with “Bad Education.”
It may be hard to remember after the “Black Mirror’s” three-peat, which followed “Sherlock’s” victory in 2016 for its special episode “The Abominable Bride,” but the Best TV Movie category used to be HBO’s domain. The network started off with a bang in 1993, triumphing in a tie for its films “Barbarians at the Gate” and “Stalin,” and then ran the table for the rest of the decade.
Since 2000, HBO has racked up 13 wins; besides the last four years, its other 21st-century losses occurred in 2000 (ABC’s “Tuesdays with Morrie” won), 2003 (TNT’s “Door to Door...

Jean-Marc Vallee might get a twin win at Saturday’s Directors Guild of America Awards. With 82/25 odds in our predictions, the “Sharp Objects” director is the favorite to take home the TV movie/miniseries prize for the second year in a row, but he ought to watch out for Ben Stiller (“Escape at Dannemora”).
Vallee prevailed last year for “Big Little Lies,” and like with that series, he helmed every episode of “Sharp Objects” as well. He’d be the third person to win this category twice after Lamont Johnson and Jay Roach.
Mick Jackson holds the record with four victories, for “Indictment: The McMartin Trial” (1995), “Tuesdays with Morrie” (1999), “Live with Baghdad” (2002) and “Temple Grandin” (2010). Joseph Sargent has three DGA Awards, for “The Marcus-Nelson Murders” (1973), “Something the Lord Made” (2004) and, in a tie with George C. Wolfe for “Lackawanna Blues,” “Warm Springs” (2005).

NBC’s live production of “Jesus Christ Superstar” broadcast on Easter Sunday, April 1, to excellent reviews (with a current MetaCritic score of 81). In recent years these live theatrical shows have become more popular on broadcast TV, and a few of them have gone on to win Emmys, like Fox’s “Grease Live” and NBC’s own “Hairspray.” But they haven’t broken through in movie/limited series acting categories yet. That could change this year with standout performers Sara Bareilles, Brandon Victor Dixon and Alice Cooper entering wide-open supporting races.
It’s true that John Legend could be nominated for and win Best Movie/Mini Actor for his leading role as Jesus, and he would gain Egot status in the process, but that race is stacked with admired A-list actors like Al Pacino (“Paterno”), Kyle MacLachlan (“Twin Peaks”), Benedict Cumberbatch (“Patrick Melrose” and “The Child in Time“), Antonio Banderas (“Genius:...

David Madden may be exactly the executive that AMC needs right now. Madden, who has just been hired as the new president of original programming for AMC, Sundance TV and AMC Studios, is well-liked, creative, and has done it all as a producer, studio executive, and network boss.
The mandate for Madden (who recently stepped down as Fox Entertainment president) is clear: Like most outlets, AMC Networks is hungry to produce — and own — more of its own content. That’s why, in addition to overseeing programming for AMC, the exec will also do the same for Sundance TV and AMC Studios — the shingle tasked with producing more programming for the AMC Networks suite, which also includes BBC America and IFC.
“David Madden is a terrific, thoughtful person and a proven, tested executive,” said AMC/Sundance TV/AMC Studios president Charlie Collier, to whom Madden will report. “He’s known broadly...

As the networks prepare to launch their new fall TV seasons, Fox is making a change at the top. Michael Thorn has been named Fox’s new entertainment president, replacing David Madden, who is exiting the network after three years and is rumored to be in contention for the top AMC programming job (which has been empty since Joel Stillerman moved to Hulu).
Thorn was most recently executive vice president of development at 20th Century Fox TV, where he worked on series including the NBC hit “This Is Us,” as well as Fox’s “Empire,” ABC’s “Speechless” and CBS’ “Life in Pieces.” He reports to Fox TV Group chairmen/CEOs Gary Newman and Dana Walden, who announced the appointment on Wednesday morning.
“We’ve worked with Michael for the past decade, and in terms of creative chops and leadership skills, he’s one of the best,” Newman and Walden said in a joint statement.

A bit character in Matt Brown‘s affecting biographical drama The Man Who Knew Infinity chants “Din, Din, Din, Gunga Din” a couple times in friendly jest as a response to his employer G.H. Hardy’s (Jeremy Irons) decision to send for an uneducated South Indian man on the merits of a letter presenting the potential for mathematical genius named Srinivasa Ramanujan (Dev Patel). We laugh at the line’s delivery as well as Hardy’s humored look of contempt because we embrace levity. What’s ironic, though, is just how close to Rudyard Kipling’s tragic poem this story of a true intellectual legend proves. The “abuse” isn’t physical and Hardy almost instantly acknowledges Ramanujan to be the better mind, but similarities including its depiction of race relations between Britain and India remain.

2016 has gotten off to a brutal start for great British entertainers. As the world gets over the death of David Bowie a few days ago, it has been set in shock again as acting legend Alan Rickman has died in London.
Rickman had been suffering from cancer and his death was confirmed on Thursday by his family. It's the worst kind of coincidence - Bowie and Rickman were 69 years old and passed after battling cancer, and a week before that British musician Lemmy also passed away from cancer just days after turning 70.
Rickman's distinct features and immediately identifiable diction were admired by generations of actors and made him synonymous with playing antagonists - something he famously wasn't a fan of as he preferred to play the dashing leading man role which he did manage to do in some of his work.

HBO Films‘ The Normal Heart delivered a solid 1.4 million viewers across two plays Sunday night. Debuting nearly three decades after Larry Kramer’s play premiered off-Broadway, the Ryan Murphy-directed project premiered at 9 Pm with an average of slightly less than 1 million viewers tuned in; an additional 434,000 thousand watched at 11:15 Pm. Behind the Candelabra HBO Hit: Liberace movie starring Michael Douglas and Matt Damon nearly breaks record Behind the Candelabra, the Steven Soderbergh-directed Liberace biopic starring Michael Douglas as Liberace and Matt Damon as his lover-chauffeur Scott Thorson, was first aired Sunday evening on HBO. The result: 2.4 million television viewers, the largest audience for an HBO original film in nearly a decade. Another 1.1 million viewers watched a repeat broadcast later in the evening. Julianne Moore as Sarah Palin, Game Change Julianne Moore may not get an Oscar nomination early next year, but she seems to have an Emmy nod — probably the award itself — guaranteed thanks to her performance as U.S. vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin in the HBO movie Game Change. As the v.p. selected to run alongside Republican presidential candidate John McCain, Palin was a source of outrage, disgust, mirth, horror, and/or worship, depending on one's point of view: far-right Christian or secular liberal, Tina Fey / Saturday Night Live fan or non-fan. This year, Game Change not only earned Moore great reviews, but according to The Hollywood Reporter it has also become HBO's most successful movie — 2.1 million viewers — since Joseph Sargent's Something the Lord Made (2.6 million in May 2004). That's quite a contrast from the Sarah Palin documentaries that, whether pro or con, bombed miserably at the North American box office last year.

With strong reviews, a little controversy and solid ratings, HBO’s "Game Change" looks to be a major frontrunner to score a boatload of Primetime Emmy nominations later this year. That film scored a whopping 11 Emmy nominations (including five acting bids) and won three. Roach’s latest effort, which recalls the 2008 presidential campaign of Sen. John McCain and Gov. Sarah Palin, is likely to match or exceed that haul. McCain and Palin’s camps have dismissed the film as "Hollywood lies," but critics and audiences say otherwise. The premiere of the film gave HBO its highest ratings for a TV movie since 2004’s "Something the Lord Made," another film that scored multiple nominations and wins. Meanwhile, critics have given "Game Change" a solid ...

Is Sarah Palin still a ratings draw? You betcha! HBO says Saturday's premiere of American Horror Story Game Change drew 2.1 million viewers, surpassing initial tune-in for other high-profile telepics from the network, including Emmy magnets Grey Gardens and Temple Grandin. In fact, the network says the political thriller (based on the best seller co-written by New York Magazine's John Heilemann) had the biggest first night of an HBO movie since 2004's Something the Lord Made (2.6 million). Add up all four weekend airings of the movie, and Game Change was seen by 3.6 million viewers. Our fingers are now tightly crossed for Game Change 2: Throwdown in Tampa.

Los Angeles, California (X17online) - The premiere of the Sarah Palin telefilm Game Change is the most-watched original movie for HBO in nearly eight years. The film brought in 2.1 million viewers last weekend, and overall has pulled in a gross audience of 3.6 million over the past four weekends. The last film to come close was Something the Lord Made, which grabbed 2.4 million viewers in May 2004. The former Alaskan governor and Gop vice presidential candidate is played by Julianne Moore, who portrays the often uninformed Republican in a somewhat unflattering light. Based on the book by Mark Halperin and John Heilemann, the movie also stars Ed Harris as Palin's running mate John McCain. The movie has received significant criticism from right-wing conservatives who believe it is an unjust portrayal. Palin herself said Game Change "lapsed into a tired routine of manipulating facts and omitting key parts in order to push...

After a massive promotional campaign and a dash of controversy, HBO’s Game Change premiered with an average of 2.1 million viewers at 9 Pm on Saturday to become the network’s most watched original film in almost 8 years, since the 2004 Something The Lord Made (2.6 million). The movie about John McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign and the meteoric rise of Sarah Palin from a little known Alaska Governor to super-star Republican running mate, doubled the premiere audience of the previous HBO movie from the same writer (Danny Strong) and director (Jay Roach), Recount, which chronicled events surrounding the 2000 presidential elections. It also outperformed the opening nights of recent HBO miniseries Mildred Pierce (1.3 million), Generation Kill (1 million) and John Adams (1.8 million). For the weekend, Game Change averaged 3.6 million viewers over multiple plays. The movie has been met with criticism by Palin and aids for the McCain-Palin ticket, with the former Alaska governor calling it “Hollywood lies.

"Dexter" has started announcing its Season 6 additions as it gears up to begin shooting. First, Colin Hanks signed on in a multi-episode arc, reportedly as a buddy of lab rat Masuka. Now actor and hip-hop artist Mos (formerly known as Mos Def) has been announced as well.
Mos will play Brother Sam, a hardened ex-con who claims to have found religion, yet seems to continually find himself surrounded by violence. Mos has certainly garnered his share of acclaim for his forays into acting. He received 2004 Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for his work in TV movie "Something the Lord Made" and also gave a stunning turn as a man suffering from locked-in syndrome in a 2009 episode of "House."
We're excited to learn of the guest stars - "Dexter" is wonderful about having a couple big names for each new season. But we're still keeping a vigil that Lumen (Julia Stiles) will come back.

Powers, that critically acclaimed graphic novel by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming, is being adapted for the FX network. We’re sure you’ve heard by now. We have been following developments right here at BoomTron.
If you’ve never picked up an issue of Powers, you really aught to check it out. There’s a tone to the writing that I really enjoy. The comic follows Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim, two partner police officers in Homicide. They investigate cases that involve “powers”. That is, people with superpowers. In their world powers are commonplace. We heard Kyle Chandler (soon to be scene in Super 8) was being considered for a role. Could it be the lead? Do you think he fits the bill?
Execs obviously think actor Charles S. Dutton fits the bill, because Deadline.com is reporting in an exclusive, he has just become the first...

When it was announced that Justin Timberlake would be taking on a role in David Fincher‘s The Social Network, many bloggers and filmgoers were probably skeptical if the former boy-bander was ready for such a top-tier project. Timberlake has always been hilarious on SNL (even winning an Emmy for his participation on the sketch comedy show) but his filmography has always left much to be desired (The Love Guru, Southland Tales). With The Social Network becoming a smash hit and receiving near universal acclaim it is clear that the pop star has finally managed to deliver a performance worthy of a legitimate actor.
Casting pop stars is always a gamble as many have very little or no acting experience and often come with larger-than-life personas that don’t mix well with the films they are placed in. Stars such as Barbara Streisand and Diana Ross paved the way for...

Two late icons -- one a British actor known for his quirky roles, the other an American president known for leading the nation through the Great Depression and World War II -- dominated the Emmy nominations Thursday. HBO's movies The Life and Death of Peters Sellers, about the actor known for his role in the Pink Panther movies, and Warm Springs, which focuses on Franklin D. Roosevelt's pre-White House days, topped the noms list with 16 apiece. It was the challenge of portraying an American icon that attracted director Joseph Sargent -- who also helmed HBO's Something the Lord Made -- to Warm Springs. He said he admired Roosevelt as president but knew little about his early life, when he contracted polio and retreated to Warm Springs, Ga., to try to find a cure.

WASHINGTON -- Dan Rather and Mary Mapes, the CBS News producer who was fired this year in connection with the 60 Minutes Wednesday segment about President Bush's National Guard service, have earned a Peabody Award for their earlier story for the newsmagazine that exposed the abuses committed by U.S. military personnel at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. The 32 winners of the 64th annual George Foster Peabody Awards, administered by the University of Georgia and announced Thursday in New York, include former NBC chief Grant Tinker, HBO's drama series Deadwood and Emmy-winning telefilm Something the Lord Made, CNBC for a documentary on Wal-Mart and Comedy Central's The Daily Show With Jon Stewart for its presidential campaign coverage called Indecision 2004.
In something of a surprise victory, Clint Eastwood took home the Directors Guild award this weekend for the up-and-coming boxing drama Million Dollar Baby. It was the strong signifier that Baby, which just opened wide this weekend on the heels of seven Oscar nominations, is becoming a force to be reckoned with at this year's Academy Awards, where it's up for Best Picture, Actor, Actress, and Director among others. It was also the first major stumbling block for Martin Scorsese, whose The Aviator, with 11 Oscar nominations, is considered by many to be the movie to beat this year. Most everyone was considering this year to be the one for Scorsese, who has yet to win an Academy Award, and his surprise DGA loss puts a damper on the upcoming fortunes for The Aviator this awards season. While the DGA isn't a 100% reliable predictor, it's a pretty darn accurate barometer of who's going to win the Best Director Oscar, as only six of its past 56 winners haven't gone on to take home the Academy Award. Adding insult to injury, Scorsese has been nominated for the DGA award six times but has never won; Eastwood has been nominated three times, and won previously for Unforgiven.
Other DGA winners including feature documentary The Story of the Weeping Camel (which bested Fahrenheit 9/11) and over on the TV side, three efforts from HBO: TV movie Something the Lord Made, drama Deadwood and now-gone comedy Sex and the City. Genius: A Night for Ray Charles won the TV musical variety award.
