Better than walking with dinosaurs
EugeneandSasha31 October 2005
Most people say this is a lot worse than Walking With Dinosaurs. Although Walking With Dinosaurs is more accurate to how dinosaurs actually were, Dinosaur Planet is much more entertaining. Their are some nice visuals in Dinosaur Planet and a lot of action and intense violent scenes. I'd recommend this to anyone who has the slightest interest in dinosaurs. Some people complain that they saw dinosaurs walking on grass. First of all, the "grass" was probably a type of grass-like plant that evolved earlier. Second of all even if it were grass that doesn't ruin the film and only real Dino nerds would care about that too much. Overall this is one of the best dinosaur documentaries ever made.

Pretty good...

Warning: Spoilers
I think this series is actually very well done. Complaints about "Dinosaurs doing stupid and unbelievable things" fly right past me... I mean, who hasn't seen PEOPLE do some pretty stupid and unbelievable things??? When Das, for example, runs into his mother, knocking her prey right out of her mouth, well, it's a mistake. We've all made mistakes. You have to keep in mind that this is a STORY, and thus must have tension, sympathy, and other elements that a straight documentary might not provide. While I really loved Walking With Dinosaurs, I believe Dinosaur planet further rounds out the education and fascination with Dinosaurs. I give it an 8 because it's not the best show I've ever seen, and is definitely not on par with Walking With Dinosaurs, but I highly recommend it to anyone who simply loves Dinosaurs! If you are picky about 'scientific errors,' please keep in mind that all we know about dinosaur behavior is guesswork, even the best guesses are probably off quite a bit. Suspend your disbelief for just a bit, and enjoy the story! If you find inaccuracies, great! That just means you were paying attention. Go ahead and point them out. Read up on them, see if you are right. It's all part of the learning process, and I for one, am more interested in learning than complaining and nitpicking.

Dinosaur Planet is another attempt of creating a great documentary about dinosaurs. This one is worth checking out, but by no means is up to par with Walking With Dinosaurs.

The Good: Dinosaur Planet has some attractive visuals and even greater CGI models. Most of the dinosaurs look very accurate and beautifully rendered. The soundtrack is also good as well as the HD sound effects. The idea of portraying a story is a very good concept and is something new different, and fresh.

The Bad: Dinosaur Planet suffers from noticeable flaws which stop it form being as great as documentaries like Walking With Dinosaurs. First off the pacing can be slow at times and 45 minutes is too long to spend on one dinosaurs story. Another problem is that the dinosaurs often do very stupid and unbelievable things. There are a few scientific inaccuracies and other minor quirks that are noticeable throughout some of the scenes as well. It also isn't as action-packed as you'd hope.

Alpha's Egg: 7.9/10

Little Das's Hunt: 7.8/10

Pod's Travels: 8.2/10

Whitetips's Journey: 7.9/10

Overall: 8.0/10

One of my favourite Dinosaur documentaries
Theroadrunnerfromhell16 December 2020
I've only just attained the patience to watch the series in full, but I love it. It does a great job of balancing science and education with entertainment and cartoonishness. (unlike other docs *cough*Dinosaur Revolution) Effects are great for their time, and music's great too.

My problems I do have with it?
  • Some scenes do seem to drag on and could be trimmed down from a 45 minute mark.
  • Some of the designs and depictions of the animals are dated scientifically to the point of being distracting (pronated zombie hands, not enough correct feathers on theropods).
  • Africa and Oceania seem annoyedly left out of the lineup (personal nitpick)

In order of favourites, I rank them: 1. White Tip's Journey 2. Pod's Travels 3. Alpha's Egg 4. Lil' Das' Hunt

The American Walking with Dinosaur. Not the original ,but still good
tankace24 April 2016
Dinosaur Planet was made in 2003 and in a way is the American counterpart of Walking with Dinosaurs and it more of a focus on a specific dinosaur rather than a safari ,like the Original. To be honest the cgi here has not aged as well as the Walking series and the fact that the environments were digitally edited ,also alienated me for I was used to cgi creatures into a real environment, with no editing in the environment. This are the drawbacks of the series, but its pros are far more strong and important. For instance the series show you fascinating new things you certainly ignore about the dinosaurs and the fact that it is a focus series allows you to understand how the creature feel, though I have to admit that on occasion ,it becomes a bit anthropomorphistic, seen it with human qualities, which is a little selfish. However the overall experience of this documentary was a nice one and the series is available online so ,I recommended to watch it, is for certain a fun ,informative ride dispute the forgiving flaws it has.

Please ignore milimani's "review." He/She clearly doesn't know how to have a good time!

No one and nothing is perfect. Even masterpieces have their flaws, but that doesn't mean they're not masterpieces anymore! You can make a legitimately quality piece of art and yet still find flaws in it here and there and that's totally natural and a normal part of life. To expect anything to be "perfect" is a foolish hill to stand on. Dinosaur Planet is not perfect but is nowhere even NEAR "bad" or "mediocre" in ANY way whatsoever.

If you love dinosaurs, documentaries, nature and history, then this is the miniseries for you! It's a beautifully crafted and intense 4 episode animated adventure set in Prehistoric times. Most of the gorgeous and breathtakingly-immersive visuals still hold up, with some minor scientific inconsistencies and jarring effects, but what can you say for something that was made waaay back in 2003? There WILL be some dated scenes, just like with ALL other movies, shows, games and more that were also made in the early-mid 2000s and even earlier! Again, it's just a natural part of life. And real world Dino science isn't even 100% accurate anyways! It's all STILL just GUESSWORK. STOP the nitpicks! Just STOP.

I first watched this masterpiece of a Dino series as a young boy and STILL love and enjoy it to this DAY as a GROWN MAN. It's truly remarkable and so underrated. STILL. HOLDS. UP!

The music is so well done and fits every moment, the man the myth the legend CHRISTIAN SLATER absolutely NAILS it out of the ballpark with his, as always, fantastic, warm, soft, soothing, raspy and lovely All-American voice work narration and all the dinosaur models and storytelling are all SO well done!

And so WHAT if some of the dinosaurs have names, like Alpha, Das, Pod and so on?? Are you THIS stuck up, pathetic and miserable in life to not appreciate and enjoy some good, fun, emotional and beautiful storytelling?!

While there is a sweet realistic and educational edge throughout the series via an experienced, veteran Paleontologist in the field, this is STILL a *FICTIONAL and DRAMATIC set of STORIES*!! So, with STORIES, we absolutely NEED characters to latch onto.

It's fun and thrilling to see a pack of Velociraptors, led by Broken Hand, roaming through the Gobi desert, the baby Sauropod, named Alpha, attempting to navigate through a harsh and merciless world of uncertainty, a baby calf, named Little Das, belonging to a family of apex predators who were, at the time, the great ancestors of one of history's most feared and iconic tyrant lizards kings of all time, the TYRANNOSAURUS REX, and so on!

Of course you can always do without names, but it doesn't RUIN anything WHATSOEVER if you DO have names in it. The most popular dinosaur franchise of all time, JURASSIC PARK, has officially nicknamed their star dinosaur, the T-Rex, "Rexy" and yet everyone, of ALL ages, STILL loves those movies AND all those dinosaurs! Get real, people. Get REAL.

And what is all the complaining with the runtimes?? Never felt slow at all to me! I can NEVER get ENOUGH sweet, sweet, QUALITY Dinosaur content. It can be truly mesmerizing to just see them living in the world. You don't need action and talking all the damn time. Just enjoy some plain and organic NATURE every once in a while, how about ya!!!

Doesn't matter how OLD you are or if there's a bunch of wonderful, awe-inspiring, NAMED dinosaur characters in this or not, EVERYONE can enjoy this and take away something valuable from this amazing, glorious, HIGHLY entertaining and GROUNDBREAKING, LANDMARK American animated documentary miniseries!

Temper your expectations and just have some good ol' fashion Prehistoric FUN! 😌🙏😄🙌🎢

Too much like a Disney programme
milimani17 October 2011
Before you start going for my throat, let me point out that this is my opinion and mine only. If you agree, fine, if you don't, fine too.

Now, I had the distinct displeasure of seeing two parts this week in a re-run on UK TV.

The first impression was that the dinosaurs look more like cuddly toys, come plastic bathtub Godzilla look-a-likes. In other words, awful.

There is hardly any interaction of the animals with their environment and personally, I don't like the idea of humanised dinosaurs (ie. giving them names and attach human emotions to such animals).

If you are 10 years old, yes, watch it, you might like it. If you've already grown up, grab a book and save the time doing something useful.

As far as a comparison with 'Walking with Dinosaurs' is concerned, I think it beats the hell out of this programme, never mind any inaccuracies.

Wait for a rerun

Four stories of varying quality concerning four dinosaurs and their struggles to survive.

Because its a Discovery Channel Production, the place where the landmark series Walking with Dinosaurs played in the US and because Discovery played up the similarities one will have to make a comparison. In my eyes Walking With Dinosaurs is the clear winner, thats not to say that Dinosaur Planet is bad, its not, its just much too long for what it is.

Where Walking was a semi documentary (but mostly a best guess) on how dinosaurs lived. Here we have hour long stories about the fights for survival of four different animals. We follow them as they try to survive in the various locations they live in with each animal getting name in the narration. Its a dinosaur version of Wild Kingdom. The problem is that each story goes on for an hour. Thats all fine and all but there isn't enough story to hold the attention for an hour for each of the characters, especially since the eat and be eaten theme gets a bit too over played.

I liked it at first, and probably would have enjoyed it more in small bits instead of the four hour marathon I saw it in.

Worth a shot on cable, especially if you love dinosaurs. Not sure about a rental and certainly see it before you buy it.
