Robert Louis Stevenson's Dr Jekyll turning into Mr Hyde has been portrayed by John Barrymore, Fredric March and Spencer Tracy - but never in a transformation quite like this.
Mrs Hyde (Madame Hyde), screenplay by Serge Bozon and Axelle Ropert, cinematography by the director's sister Céline Bozon, stars Isabelle Huppert as Mrs Géquil, the science teacher (or music or English) you don't remember. Fragile, timid, frightened, she has a preference for pale yellow cardigans and pink skirts and sensible shoes, and speaks with a high, shaky voice when she enters the classroom.
José Garcia is her stay-at-home husband who cooks for her and is less perceptive than he seems. Romain Duris, the principal of the school where she teaches, wears pants and ties (in rust, avocado, pale purple or the...

“A man cannot destroy the savage in him by denying its impulses. They only way to get rid of a temptation is to yield to it.”
Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde (1920) will screen at Webster University’s Moore Auditorium Friday October 20th at 7:30pm. Austin, Texas’ most adventurous band, The Invincible Czars, will provide live music. The band encourages fans and attendees to dress for the Halloween season at these shows.
Alongside Sherlock Holmes and James Bond, Robert Louis Stevenson’s novella The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is a work that has spawned many screen adaptations, yet predates both, the first of which dating as far back as 1908. Widely considered one of, if not the best of the bunch, director John S. Robertson’s seminal 1920 proto-horror classic Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde is mostly remembered for one thing above all others. To the credit of the Locarno Festival, the films in the 2017 selection don’t waste time trying to tell universal stories that transcend their time and place. Falling in love varies depending on the social conditions behind it, as Xu Bing’s found-footage film “Dragonfly Eyes” aptly proves, while weaving a story about obsession and surveillance in contemporary China. Similarly, working in a mine in Serbia has a wholly different routine than mining for gold in Suriname, as Ben Russell’s latest documentary “Good Luck” takes its time to show. Even something as widespread as the notion of the work/life balance varies considerably in films from Locarno coming from different parts of the world and set in different milieus, and enough of these films either circumvent or contradict traditional depictions of the home.
It’s telling that new films in which the home is a sooth place are either...

Close-Up is a feature that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. Jean Renoir's The Testament of Dr. Cordelier (1959) is playing August 3 - September 2, 2017 in the United States as part of the series Jean Renoir.Jean Renoir frequently focused on complicated characters who toe the line between right and wrong. They are often trapped by social mores, for better or for worse. In works like The Crime of Monsieur Lange (1936) or The River (1951), characters are unfairly confined, while in films like La chienne (1931) or La bête humaine (1938), a breaking from custom is fatally dangerous. Even in more light-hearted fare, such as French Cancan (1954), a bold flaunting of convention is cause for conflict and scandal. It seems only logical, then, that Renoir in his interest in the imposed customs of community and the social construction of morals would be drawn to Robert Louis Stevenson’s Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde...

The 23rd entry in an on-going series of audiovisual essays by Cristina Álvarez López and Adrian Martin. Mubi is showing Jean Renoir's The Testament of Dr. Cordelier (1959) is August 3 - September 2, 2017 in the United States as part of the series Jean Renoir.Jean Renoir’s The Experiment of Dr. Cordelier (a.k.a. The Doctor’s Horrible Experiment, 1959), shot using the multi-camera set-up of a television production, is a free variation on Robert Louis Stevenson’s immortal tale, Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1886). However, Renoir’s take on this material owes less to the horror genre than to a kind of speculative, philosophical fiction. Unlike in most screen versions of the Jekyll/Hyde duality, Renoir goes easy on the conventional distinction between the good and evil sides of a single personality. Yes, the figure of Opale, into whom Cordelier transforms himself, is destructive, bestial, cruel, and sadistic.

Mubi's retrospective The Many Sins of Walerian Borowczyk is showing February 12 - June 18, 2017 in the United States and in many other countries around the world. The late 1970s marks a stylistic departure for Walerian Borowczyk, as the Polish director moved away from a controlled, painterly style and toward a ‘corporeal’ style, wherein changes in aesthetic choices allowed him to explore the human body in greater depth than in his previous films. While the liberal portrayal of sex and sexuality (lending itself to the liberal portrayal of bodies, human or otherwise) is present in Borowczyk’s live-action films as early as his anthology Immoral Tales from 1973, the preoccupation with the body specifically comes to the fore with the films Behind Convent Walls (1978), Immoral Women (1979), L’armoire (1979), Lulu (1980), and The Strange Case of Doctor Jekyll and Miss Osbourne (1981). It is in this four-year period that the viewer will notice Borowczyk's moving away...

Vanessa’s treatment continues with a full confession of her past to Dr Seward, later listened to by the now vampire-thralled Renfield. Tasked with doing something that she would enjoy, Vanessa returns to the museum and her friendship with Dr Alexander Sweet deepens as they attend a show together. A full moon strikes at a very convenient time for Ethan, but he finds help in the form of an unlikely ally. Frankenstein and Jekyll continue to work together on their respective projects, whilst Lily and Dorian undertake a pet project of their own.

*Updated* Russell Crowe confirms earlier reports that he is going to play Dr. Henry Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in The Mummy.
Earlier this week, news broke that Russell Crowe was in discussions to join The Mummy as the classic literary character with a dual personality. Shedding some light on the matter is Crowe himself, who confirmed his involvement while on the press rounds for his new film, The Nice Guys.
Speaking with Collider, Crowe had this to say when asked if he is “officially” on board The Mummy:
“Yeah, I’m gonna do it. I’m gonna play Dr. Henry Jekyll, Fellow of the Royal Society. It’s very interesting, what they’re gonna do with that stuff. I’ve had a couple of chats about it with the director (Alex Kurtzman).”

Not content to sit out of the “shared universe” craze taking the silver screen by storm, Universal diving into their library of movie monsters to build a cinematic world where these classic creatures all live. One of the movies in this new series will be The Mummy reboot, led by Tom Cruise. Over the last couple months, other actors have been announced to join the Mission: Impossible star, and now there’s word that Oscar winner Russell Crowe might be added as a famous literary scientist. Crowe, soon to be seen in The Nice Guys, is reportedly in early talks to join the new Mummy movie, but not just as any random person. According to Deadline, he would be playing a “Jekyll-like role,” referring to the character Dr. Jekyll and his monstrous counterpart, Mr. Hyde, from Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1886 novel. If a deal ...

Russell Crowe is in early talks to join Universal Pictures' "The Mummy" reboot, the first film in a burgeoning cinematic universe featuring the studio's classic monsters like Dracula, Frankenstein and The Wolf Man.
If a deal happens, Crowe would appear as the tormented Dr. Henry Jekyll who changes into a murderous madman named Mr. Hyde in "The Mummy" before potentially starring in his own film.
Crowe is not a lock for this screen incarnation of the classic Robert Louis Stevenson character, in fact he's the third actor who has been in talks for the role with both Tom Hardy and Javier Bardem also in talks before those fell apart.
The Alex Kurtzman-directed film has already been shooting in London for weeks with Tom Cruise, Sofia Boutella, Annabelle Wallis and Jake Johnson already onboard.

We’ve had a couple of brief teasers already, but now Showtime has released a full trailer for the third season of their brilliant and disturbing horror drama series, Penny Dreadful. The network has also announced that like last year’s season 2 premiere, the show will return on Sunday, May 1st at 9 p.m.
The last time we saw our core characters, they had all gone their separate ways (some very far away indeed), but it looks like the gang are all set to return for season 3. It’s not clear exactly what brings them back together from this trailer, but Vanessa Ives (Eva Green) does look to be confined to some sort of mental institution, so perhaps that’s the catalyst.
As far as new faces go, this season will see the introduction of another classic literary fiend in the form of Dr. Henry Jekyll, who’ll be played by Shazad Latif.

Charlie Higson's new adaptation of the classic Robert Louis Stevenson novel received 280 complaints at ITV and a further 212 with regulator Ofcom.
The debut episode featured various graphic and violent moments, including a man being shot in the chest and another getting burned to death. Ouch.
Starring Tom Bateman and Richard E Grant, it follows the original Dr Jekyll's nephew in 1930s London, and has a rather superhero twang.
An Ofcom spokesperson said: "Ofcom has received 212 [complaints] about Jekyll and Hyde, which aired on ITV on Sunday. We will assess these complaints before deciding whether to investigate or not."
ITV added: "ITV issued a warning before the transmission of Jekyll and Hyde advising the parents of younger children they may find some scenes scary."

Coming to ITV this Sunday is Charlie Higson's new superhero take on Jekyll & Hyde. Here's what we learned on set this summer...
It's not every day you see Richard E. Grant and Tom Bateman tussling in an underground bunker. Visiting the set of ITV’s superhero-retelling of Jekyll & Hyde in the outskirts of London this June, that’s exactly what we got.
The new show, a 1930s adaptation of the oft-retold Robert Louis Stevenson novel, focuses on Robert Jekyll, the grandson of Edward Hyde and inheritor of the family’s dark secret. It’s 19th Century literature with a modern superhero twist, and fully intends to take over Sunday-night family viewing.
The show, which premieres this Sunday at 6.30pm on ITV, filmed its first ten-episode series in London over the summer. With a gaggle of other journalists, Den of Geek visited the set and chatted with...

Tom Bateman will soon explode onto our TV screens in ITV's brand new superhero-inspired adaptation of Jekyll and Hyde.
Writer Charlie Higson has already described Bateman as a "sexy" update of the doctor with the split personality, who will be the grandson of the title character in Robert Louis Stevenson's classic tale.
Speaking to Digital Spy, Bateman said that watching Heath Ledger's take on The Joker in The Dark Knight was a big influence on how he played Hyde.
"Jekyll is quite close to me, a little bit more shy. Whereas Hyde is a mish-mash of lots of things. I didn't realise I was borrowing it throughout the auditions – but Heath Ledger's Joker [was an influence].
"You love watching the Joker, and yes that's what I was doing, subconsciously that. I'd obviously seen it and it had embedded it self a little bit. A Clockwork Orange also has that sort of gross,...

The Fast Show star Charlie Higson has already tackled cult with his Young James Bond novels, and embraced horror with post-apocalyptic series The Enemy. Now, he's taking on both with ITV's new version of Jekyll and Hyde.
Tom Bateman stars as the eponymous doctor with the split-personality, in a rebooted superhero-themed adaptation taking place in 1930s London. It also stars Richard E Grant and former Coronation Street actress Natalie Gumede, and will focus on the grandson of the doctor featured in Robert Louis Stevenson's story.
Writer Higson told Digital Spy that Doctor Who's success on the BBC led to ITV searching for a monster hit (pun intended) that could prove a success overseas. He also spoke of his previous attempts to bring back the fantasy genre in the early 2000s.
"I've always wanted to do something of a heavy fantasy nature. And I tried it with Randall and...

When I was a kid, I used to love a scary movie. I remember catching the original The Haunting (1963) one night on Channel 9’s Million Dollar Movie when I was home alone. Before it was over, I had every light in the house on. When my mother got home she was screaming she’d been able to see the house glowing from two blocks away. The only thing screaming louder than her was the electricity meter.
That was something of an accomplishment, scaring me like that. Oh, it’s not that I was hard to scare (I still don’t like going down into a dark cellar). But, in those days, the movies didn’t have much to scare you with. Back as far as the 50s, you might find your odd dismemberment and impaling, even an occasional decapitation, but, generally, the rule of the day was restraint. Even those rare dismemberments,...

Penny Dreadful has already been likened to Alan Moore's League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and those comparisons are going to become more frequent now that they've added Dr. Jekyll to the mix. According to Variety Shazad Latif (The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel) will play an interpretation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Dr. Henry Jekyll, and most likely his murderous alter-ego Mr. Hyde at some point, too. The site also reports that Patti LuPone, who played Joan Clayton (aka the Cut-Wife) season two, will be returning as a different character: Dr. Seward, who will treat Eva Green’s bewitched Vanessa Ives with an “unconventional new approach.” Other new additions include Wes Studi as Kaetenay, "an intense, enigmatic Native American with a deep connection to Ethan (Josh Hartnett)", and Christian Camargo as Dr. Alexander Sweet, "a zoologist who strikes up an unlikely friendship with Vanessa." Penny Dreadful returns with 9 new episodes...

ITV has released the first clip from its upcoming ten-part "Jekyll & Hyde" event series which isn't so much a new adaptation of the Robert Louis Stevenson short story so much as a superhero-themed reimagined sequel to it.
Tom Bateman, Richard E. Grant and Natalie Gumede star in this new take in which we follow the grandson of the original Dr. Jekyll who is a young, sensitive and meek man. His 'Hyde' however is a confident, risk-taking superhero with super powers who gets things done. The series premieres sometime this Fall.

Is there a filmmaker better-suited to the classic Dr. Jekyll story than Walerian Borowczyk? In the five films (and numerous shorts) Arrow included in their box set last year, he again and again returns to the idea of people having two sides – a socially-acceptable, even enviable face they put to the public, and a sordid private life in which they commit all manner of sins. Unlike so much of Western fiction, this license to transgress was not granted exclusively to men, either. His women were often capable of much worse. Fitting, then, that his version of this story, which shares only the premise with Robert Louis Stevenson’s novella, should include a woman in its title. All the more daring that this woman should be based, at least in name, on Stevenson’s own wife.
Like Borowczyk’s The Beast (or the even more-disturbing “Erzsébet Báthory” segment from Immoral Tales), Dr.

Between Universal’s planned resurrections of its most iconic monsters and the considerable success of Showtime’s Penny Dreadful, it’s a great time for classic monsters. Now, it appears that Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is the latest genre property to head back into development, with word that ITV is plotting an ambitious, 10-part Jekyll & Hyde series.
The adaptation hails from Charlie Higson, the British author behind the bestselling Young Bond series and the teen-targeted, post-apocalyptic Enemy series. Higson will both write and exec-produce. Unlike previous takes on the classic novel, Jekyll & Hyde is set in 1930s London at a time of Hollywood glamour, aerodynamic cars and monster movies.
It centers on Robert Jekyll, the grandson of the original doctor, who is described as “young, attractive and troubled.” Apparently, some unfortunate family genes have been passed down. After becoming a doctor,...
