'I'm a psychologist, I can help.'

The Police call in Fitz when a young boy is found hanged in The woods, the question, murder or suicide.

A chilling, unsettling, dark story, one that leaves you feeling rather haunted, a little uncomfortable. The main cast are all so well established, we see some quite surprising behaviour, particularly from the boss.

Despite the rather bleak tone, there are definitely still some wonderful moments of humour here, McGovern has always known when to use humour well.

I like that it's a two part story, it means that the pacing here was great, it doesn't hang around for a minute, it's hard hitting, and keeps on punching, don't expect any lulls.

There is so much in the title, it's very revealing.

Great start, 9/10.

"Sir, no offence, it's getting so we can't shit without Fitz."

Barbara and Edward Fitzgerald had possibly the first enjoyable night out together at the flicks, coupled by Barbara actually wanting to spend a romantic night with him, and what does the prize twat decide to do right in the very midst of it?

Fitzgerald's true nature comes to the fore as he puts his gambling addiction before his own wife, but reaps what he sowed on the way back from the casino with his winnings.

A young boy reported missing by his parents is discovered hanging in a wood, DCI Bilbourough wants Fitz to be involved in the case and to talk to the parents about him, but this isn't universally acceptable on the force.

The boy's death incites unrest at his school amongst the pupils, one of the school teachers makes attempts to top himself, and his arrest provokes scenes of hysteria among angry parents of young kids.

Haunting.

Wow, these episodes Part One and Two of Cracker are certainly among the best. The nature of love in all its forms, layers, twists and turns, is examined. We get a look at how Fitz, the lead character, understands the power and meaning of love, yet in his own life, pushes love away. For example,he will not forgive his wife for a brief infidelity which took place while he and his wife were SEPARATED. Yet she is supposed to forgive him for his chronic gambling, drinking, and egotistical and selfish behavior. He lusts after a colleague and considers an affair, yet does not question his own double standard with regard to his wife.

Fitz really IS his own worst enemy, yet we can't totally dislike him. We feel sorry for him and at the same time, we don't. He evokes complex and contradictory feelings in us. He is fascinating.

How does he have such confidence in his sex appeal for women when he is so overweight, that is one thing I would like to know.

This two-parter left me feeling unsettled, and pondering again the power and complexity of love as it plays out in the murder story and in Fitz' private life. Don't miss these Lemming episodes.

Another strong episode with a top cast and writing. I prefer these two parters as they are tighter. Great performances by several actors that have come on to greater things.

One Day a Lemming Will Fly: Part 1

The third story of the first season and there is a bit of a groove established.

A 13 year old schoolboy has disappeared and his hung body was found. It looks like suicide but it is murder. He had been strangled.

The dead boy was mercilessly bullied at school as he was regarded as effeminate or gay.

DCI Bilborough wants Fitz involves and DS Beck is getting sick and tired of Fitz being called in.

However throughout the first episode. Bilborough and Beck have perfected their good cop/bad cop routine.

There was a courting couple who came across the body. A schoolteacher is regarded as a suspect.

Shown a few months after the Jamie Bulger incident. This story would had aroused controversy at the time although it would have been purely coincidental.

I noted the hysterical response from the local community when a suspect is brought in for questioning. The police feared for their own safety.

The story is balanced by the turmoil in Fitz's life. He can't get over his wife's infidelity when they were seperated.

Bilsborough's mind is not always with it as his wife's pregnant. He seems distracted at times.
