You don't have to be a SpongeBob fan to enjoy this game.

"Are you ready kids?" "Aye Aye Captain!" Screams an adult me who's never watched SpongeBob as a kid.

"SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom" follows SpongeBob as he attempts to defend Bikini Bottom from an invasion of robots created by Plankton with a machine called the Duplicatotron 3000, with the help of his friends Patrick and Sandy.

The core gameplay involves collecting items and defeating robots across various areas in Bikini Bottom, whilst crossing platforms and avoiding environmental hazards like spikes and flames. Some areas require different characters to beat, as each playable character - SpongeBob, Patrick and Sandy - have their own unique abilities.

The game is a 3D platformer collectathon, requiring players to collect three main types of items. 'Shiny Objects' are the game's currency and can be used to pay tolls within game areas or to buy golden spatulas from Mr. Krabs. 'Golden Spatulas' are used to grant access to new areas, being hidden throughout the game and can also be earned by completing tasks set by several characters from the cartoon.

This isn't the only SpongeBob game that I've played, but it's the only one that kept me engaged for more than an hour and finish the storyline of the game. This game is immensely fun, possibly even addicting - as I spent hours and hours immersed into exploring the levels, collecting and solving challenges by jumping, beating and swinging my way through the levels.

What makes the game so tempting to revisit, is its sheer diversity of level design - varying from a downtown city and forest, to a beach, ski hills, etc. It's refreshing to play a visually and tonally 'light' themed level after coming from a 'darker' themed level, and vice versa. This variety adds to the colorful, fun visual aesthetics and sound design that has made the show itself popular for years - ultimately making this a faithful game adaptation.

The ability to play as Patrick and Sandy, who each have their own unique abilities, keeps the gameplay experience fresh and distinctive.

There are a few chuckle worthy moments that carries the wit of the show - with its humorous dialogues, character exchanges and their dynamics (it's always funny to see Squidward getting annoyed by literally everything).

Honestly, I love a game when it's not too difficult to play through, or at least when it provides difficulty options for me to choose the easiest from. It's easy to complete the storyline of this game, which made it pleasant enough for me to keep playing despite some rage quit moments. The boss fights are challenging yet beatable in 2-3 tries, and the game's mostly non-linear with its levels - meaning that you can skip a task if it's too difficult, and collect the required Spatulas from some other task or level (or even buy them from the ever-greedy Mr. Krabs).

If you're a collectionist, the game offers a good replay value with the ability to go back to previous levels and collect remaining items.

The cons are few. The camera becomes an issue at tight spaces (a common problem among platformer games), and the platforming aspect itself can get frustratingly difficult - especially with lack of frequent checkpoints, forcing you to start a challenge from the beginning.

I recommend this game not only to kids or fans of the show, but to gamers who like good platformer games with unique aesthetics. I played the GameCube version of this game using the Dolphin Emulator for Mac, which works amazingly.

Great Game for SB Fans
StephenBurg23 June 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Battle for Bikinni Bottom (not to be confused with the episode "Battle of Bikinni Bottom") is a video game based on the Nickelodeon TV show SpongeBob SqaurePants. Plankton unveils his latest scheme to steal the formula; creating evil robots. Everything would have worked out fine for him if he didn't set the machine of "Don't Obey." (Villians often call themselves "genuises." How can a genius do something stupid like that). SpongeBob believes that he might have caused the robots and Plankton uses SpongeBob to stop the robots, along with Sandy and Patrick. The story, characters and humor will get you playing until you win. Believe it or not, this is actually a pretty complicated and-sometimes even addictive- video game. I can only speak for the GameCube and GameBoy Advanced versions, but I thought both of them are great games. If you're a SB fan, then you'll love this game. Unfortunately, there are fewer and fewer copies of games like this with the 3DS and the Wii and everything. My Rating: 8/10

I solomnly stand by the belief that this is not only the best SpongeBob SquarePants video game, but it is one of the best 3-D platformers ever. Everything about this game is fantastic, the music, the controls, and the way this game truly captures the essence of the show.

Has aged extremely well
fabio-7156927 December 2021
The first time I have played the old Ps2 version was in 2009 when I was about 5 years old. I finished the game years later, because I couldn't understand the mechanics (obviously). Looking back at it now in 2021, after I bought the Remake (Rehydrated) I still remember every single detail that was put into the development of the old version. The graphics are still amazing for such an old game. Comparable to another great/unfinished game: Crash Bandicoot Twinsanity. Both of these games have aged extremely well in terms of game mechanics and graphics. It is a great game for beginners and I would recommend it to the younger audience mainly, because most older people who have been playing games for their whole life, will not find a challenge in this game. It is a fun platformer and considering it's release date, a well aged game (yes I repeated myself 3 times) 10 out of 10.

Best SpongeBob Game Ever
philstrat19 September 2019
This game was a huge part of my childhood, almost as much as SpongeBob SquarePants was. The background music is atmospheric and some of the best I've seen in any game. The graphics were great for the time and I still think it feels like playing an episode of the show. This game was a gem on my Nintendo GameCube and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys SpongeBob and/or enjoys action-adventure games.

Behold, the greatest SpongeBob video game of all time.
Cord454 November 2023
Oh yes. SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom is without a doubt one the best, if not, the very best SpongeBob video game of all time. It gets everything right. It captures all the fun excitement of the show as well as many of the the neat features of a platform game. The features three playable characters: Patrick Star, Sandy Cheeks, and of course the man himself, SpongeBob SquarePants. Each character has his/her own unique abilities. The levels and environments are splendid. The Mermalair is my favorite. It's amazing how they've captured and created some of greatest settings from the show. The gameplay is excellent as well. Here, you save Bikini Bottom fro evil robots created by the dreaded Plankton. I've beaten it several time. So, it undoubtedly has tremendous replay value. As far as difficulty goes, it's not too high. It's certainly not as the movie game. I find that one to be the most difficult. But if you like platformers, you'll like this one. Even non-SpongeBob get a kick out of it. If that doesn't make it the greatest SpongeBob game, I don't know what will. SSBFBB wins 1st place!
