Filmmakers use unprecedented access to real "live" crime scenes to create realistic documentary
TheRealCSI6 August 2004
I am the Henderson Police Department Criminalistics Bureau Administrator, one of persons in "The Real CSI" documentary series. I was also fortunate to have participated in one of the two episodes of "Las Vegas CSU", also filmed/produced by Tom McCarthy, Julie Lei, of Lion TV, with additional major footage by Sarah Harbin.

I encouraged the City of Henderson Nevada and the Henderson Police Department to allow the film crew full access to our facilities and our crime scenes. We obviously didn't allow anything to interrupt our investigation, interfere with or allow for contamination of potential evidence, etc. It was much harder, processing crime scenes and the evidence with Julie, Tom and Sarah in tow, but it was well worth it.

Over a period of six months, these hard working filmmakers did a great job of capturing our work, showing the tough job of being a real CSI. I believed it was important to participate in any such documentary that would help show what we can really do, our limitations, and some of our successes.

I am embarrassed at how I looked and sounded in certain portions of the series, but Julie and Tom did a nice job of putting it together. The sounds and visual affects also turned it into somewhat of a "docutainment", not just a dry documentary we sometimes see in specials or shows on some of the Forensic topics.

Thanks for the opportunity to provide some comments,

Rick Workman, Henderson, Nevada
