Dan McDermott has been tapped to head BBC Studios and Lionsgate’s TV partnership. The U.K. and U.S. partners announced late last year they were joining forces to work up scripted formats and IP for the U.S. market.
McDermott has been executive vice president of programming at Fox and president of television for DreamWorks. He also partnered with Lorenzo di Bonaventura to launch Di Bonaventura Pictures, and has executive produced series including “Zero Hour” and the upcoming “Jupiter’s Legacy” for Netflix.
BBC Studios is the commercial and production arm of U.K. pubcaster the BBC. In an earlier incarnation as BBC Worldwide, it joined forces with Starz on a drama slate that included “Torchwood” and “Da Vinci’s Demons.” Part of the BBC-Lionsgate pact involves scouring the huge BBC archive for IP that could be reworked for the U.S. market.

Comic Books 101: DC Comics-Reading Batman Pt 2
Previously I wrote an article helping new readers figure out the best places to pick up Batman from DC Comics . For those confused or still uncertain about major events in DC Comics (which connect to various “jumping on” points for Batman) I wrote an article detailing the big company altering stories in my history of the DC Universe article. This time around I am going to open up a bit more on the adventures of The Dark Knight, and take a look at some of the bigger, and in my opinion, best stories for potential Batman readers. This will include small and big story lines that exist in various continuities within the DC Comics publication history for the character. There won’t be any set “this is better than that” to the stories listed, simply moments in the characters publication where a...

It will be a while before the networks start making decisions about which shows to bring back for the 2013-14 season. But it's never too early to start speculating.
Zap2it's annual Bubble Watch will roll out as usual in March and April, and you'll have a chance to vote on which on-the-fence shows to keep and which ones to dump. With pilot season about to heat up, though, it's worth looking at last year's pilots -- this season's first-year shows -- and seeing how their chances of renewal for a second season stack up. Let's go:
Locks
"Arrow": It's The CW's most-watched series (averaging about 4 million viewers), and though it skews a little older than the network's target demographic, networks just don't cancel their most-watched shows.
"Elementary": CBS gave its Sherlock Holmes show a big vote of confidence by giving it a Super Bowl lead-in on Feb.

Now that the Winter 2013 Television Critic’s Association Press Tour is finally over, it seemed like a good time to recall some of the choice moments over the 14-day star-studded event. Since it would be nearly impossible to recount all the stand-out moments and all the cool shows upcoming this year, we have selected only a few to showcase.
The Kiss
Nothing was more buzzed about than the unexpected kiss between stars Kevin Bacon and James Purefoy at the Fox panel for The Following. It has been said that a picture is worth a thousand words, but truly you had to have been there for the impact of that memorable moment to be felt. The ease with Kevin Back just casually leaned over and planted a kiss on his co-star was a testament to the strong bond between them. Viewers may be buzzing about the underlying sexual energy between their...

Yesterday we learned that Steven Spielberg's epic sci-fi film Robopocalypse was put on hold, but for some reason a lot of sites around the web reported that the project was dead. Not sure where that came from, but it's not dead, just delayed. Just to set things straight, Spielberg talked to EW explaining that the movie isn't dead, and why exactly he decided to put it on hold.
We found that the film was costing a lot of money, and I found a better way to tell the story more economically but also much more personally. I found the personal way into 'Robopocalypse', and so I just told everybody to go find other jobs, I’m starting on a new script and we’ll have this movie back on its feet soon.

Steven Spieberg's next film was supposed to the big budget sci-fi film Robopocalypse, but it's been put on hold. It was supposed to start shooting this spring, but apparently he just wants some more time to develop it. The movie isn't dead, it's just going to take a little more time to get to the big screen. Spielberg still plans on directing it, the film just isn't rush priority for him. Spielberg's spokesman, Marvin Levy, released a statement saying, the movie is "too important and the script is not ready, and it's too expensive to produce. It's back to the drawing board to see what is possible."
The film is an adaptation of a novel written by Daniel H. Wilson, and the screenplay was written by Drew Goddard (Cabin in the Woods, Cloverfield). The story centers on a battle for survival after mankind generates its first mass intelligence computer brain only to see it escape,...

ABC today revealed that it is pulling the remaining completed episodes of 666 Park Avenue from its winter lineup entirely, in favor of a couple of comedies which will continue on in their regular Tuesday night slots on top of taking over the Sunday position. Because 10:00 on a Sunday night is a notoriously excellent slot for comedy.
Sorry for the snark, but seriously? We try to keep the coverage even-tempered and generally positive here at SciFiMafia.com, but this decision is just so frakking irritating. THR is reporting that the unaired 666 Park Avenue episodes will be shown this summer, the network version of wishing a show into the cornfield.
Sci-fi fans, we’re going to need to really pull together for Zero Hour, which premieres on February 14 at 8/7c. And hopefully the episodes that follow the excellent pilot will warrant our commitment. Best of luck to all.

It's going to be a busy, busy spring of programming moves on ABC. On Tuesday (December 4), ABC announced its midseason premiere dates, an impressively busy assortment of movies that includes premiere dates for "Body of Proof," "Zero Hour," "Red Widow," "How to Live with Your Parents (for the Rest of Your Life)" and "Family Tools," plus another time slot swap for "Suburgatory." Oh and ABC also announced premiere dates for the 16th installment of "Dancing with the Stars," as well as the new reality shows "Celebrity Diving" and "The Taste." Up first is "The Taste," a cooking competition series featuring...

ABC is overhauling its schedule for midseason with changes on four nights. New comedies Family Tools and How To Live With Your Parents (For The Rest Of Your Life) will join the network’s Wednesday comedy block, with ABC’s Tuesday comedy block going away. New drama Red Widow will succeed 666 Park Ave on Sunday. ABC is replacing now-defunct freshman Last Resort with another male-skewing new drama in the challenging Thursday 8 Pm slot, Zero Hour. And, following the end of Private Practice, the revamped Body of Proof will return to its Tuesday 10 Pm slot. For a second consecutive year, ABC is scrapping a plan announced at the upfronts to expand its Tuesday comedy block from one to two hours in midseason. Last fall, the network started with a 8-9 Pm block anchored by Last Man Standing, which was supposed to stretch to 10 Pm in midseason with the addition of Cougar Town...

Following the rest of the networks, ABC released its midseason schedule on Tuesday, making room several new series -- and shuffling a few existing ones, including Happy Endings and Don't Trust the B in Apartment 23, which will end their runs early in March. After a two-hour premiere on Sunday, March 3, Red Widow gets the post-Revenge time slot at 10 p.m. starting March 10. And in the place of the also-axed Last Resort, the 8 p.m. Thursday time slot goes to thriller Zero Hour starting Feb. 14. Dancing With the Stars returns for its 16th

ABC has opted not to give full season orders for its new dramas "Last Resort" and "666 Park Avenue," effectively axing both shows.
Though the network picked up two additional scripts for each show, they've decided not to produce them or further episodes beyond the original thirteen episode order. Both series will be allowed to finish airing their already produced thirteen episodes.
ABC passed on both shows due to underwhelming ratings. 'Resort' was averaging over seven million viewers per episode in its 8pm Thursday timeslot, one of the hardest for the network to fill. Shows like "Missing" and the "Charlie's Angels" reboot have all died in the same timeslot over the past eighteen months.
'666' was pulling in around five million viewers per episode. ABC will likely fill those slots with some of its new mid-season dramas like "Zero Hour," "Mistresses" and "Red Widow."

Back in September, we heard the excellent news that Anne Hathaway was circling the female lead for Steven Spielberg’s Robopocalypse, the upcoming sci-fi/action blockbuster adaptation of Daniel H. Wilson’s best-selling novel.
Hathaway has recently been speaking with Empire, and has now confirmed her involvement with the project:
“If Robopocalypse happens I will be in it… and I believe it’s quite real, though you never want to hang your hat on anything.”
Chris Hemsworth and Ben Whishaw have also been in talks to star in the film, and the three would certainly make for a very interesting trio.
The ever-brilliant Drew Goddard (Cloverfield, The Cabin in the Woods) has penned the script from which Spielberg will direct.
Courtesy of Waterstones, here’s the original synopsis for Wilson’s novel:

It is the highest-rated telecast on the network in the demo since the premiere of George W. Bush: The 9/11 Interview in August 2011. The gray rolling seas thundered through the forest of pilings under the piers, sometimes cresting enough to send a geyser of wind-whipped froth up onto the decking. Other places, it poured through the gaps the wind and tide had eaten through the dunes and poured into the beach town streets. It pulled boats large and small from their moorings in the lagoon marinas and piled them like a child’s toys up on the land. Some in apartment buildings would tell of the cars in the ground level garage floating against each other bathtub playthings. But there was nothing childlike in the way it took entire houses, made seaside villages look like an extension of the ocean and not the land.

While some New York-area television shows resumed filming today after Hurricane Sandy battered the east coast Monday, it could be a harder road to recovery for ABC’s 666 Park Avenue.
The show’s set, which is located at Cine Magic Riverfront Studios in Brooklyn, overlooking the New York City skyline, suffered severe damages after water flooded the building Monday night.
“I went to check them out on the night of the storm at 10 p.m. and they were under 6 feet of water — the entire complex,” says Peter Kapsalis, owner of Cine Magic Riverfront Studios. “It wasn’t in very good shape.

ABC is giving full-season pickups to freshman comedy The Neighbors and returning drama Scandal.
Nope, Scandal didn’t already have one. Second-season shows often get full season orders, but ABC has been cautious with the Shonda Rhimes political soap. But in the wake of its reasonably steady performance on Thursdays this fall, Scandal is now getting an extra nine episodes and its first full season. It’s no surprise that Halloween results in big sales for all types of business around the country, but it’s interesting when someone does the math and breaks down how much is spent and what is purchased. According to FEARnet, Halloween and the horror industry at this time of year is a $7 billion dollar business and they’ve put together an interesting infographic to show off some of the highlights:
(Santa Monica – October 23, 2012) – Halloween has been transformed—it is no longer merely a day for candy and superstition; it is a multi-billion-dollar business, according to figures compiled by FEARnet, the cable industry’s premier TV movie network, VOD channel and online portal featuring horror, suspense and thriller content. In 2011, Halloween-related spending neared 7 billion dollars; up from 3.29 billion dollars in 2005. This year, the average person will spend $72.31 on costumes, candy and decorations, and will have an estimated 15,000 pop-up Halloween stores to choose from.

I believe that all DC’s continuity still exists.
That may sound controversial (and it could just be the way my brain works), but I genuinely believe in that statement. I have followed the adventures of various comic book heroes for years and have gone back and read and researched stories from before, during and after the first Crisis on Infinite Earths and still believe that those stories also count. I believe that just as time is depicted as being a fluid changeable series of random events, so too is the continuity and stories of all the DC heroes. In fact, I see the characters following the time-line in their universe in much the same way as we do as readers.
I see it as a straight line in many respects. For example, all of the pre-crisis stories such as Superman fighting Lex Luthor on Lexor and the Flash traversing between parallel universes happened.

Ken Leung has added a third drama series to his busy workload.
The Lost alum has joined NBC’s midseason soap Infamous in a recurring role, TVLine has learned exclusively. Leung is also currently recurring on CBS’ Person of Interest as a thieving accountant, and recently booked an arc as a priest on ABC’s upcoming thriller Zero Hour.
Infamous is described as an opulent soap in which a female detective (played by Meaghan Good) returns undercover to the wealthy family she grew up in – as the maid’s daughter – to solve the murder of the notorious heiress who was once her closest friend.

Steven Spielberg is looking to cast Ben Whishaw in a major role for his upcoming sci-fi film Robopocalypse. For those of you not familiar with Whishaw he stars in the upcoming movie Cloud Atlas, and also plays Q in the new James Bond film Skyfall.
Anne Hathaway and Chris Hemsworth are also both up for lead roles in Spielberg's new project. There's no confirmation on any of this casting right now, but if Whishaw is cast he will play a hacker named Lurker.
Robopocalypse is scheduled to start shooting next year and will be released on April 25th, 2014. I'm looking forward to this movie, and I really hope Spielberg does something special with it. She’s been a princess and actually had the guts to steal a car from Batman himself, but Anne Hathaway might be facing a brand new challenge if she enters the world of Robopocalypse.
DreamWorks has been developing the tale of a war against machines since 2009, and things have been taking shape pretty fast recently after it seemed like a whole lot of nothing was going on with the film adaptation of the Daniel H. Wilson novel.
Tom Rothman, who will be stepping down as chairman of Fox Filmed Entertainment on January 1, 2013, will be producing the film, with Fox and Disney handling distribution. On the starring front, Chris Hemsworth (Thor, The Avengers, Snow White and the Huntsman) is in negotiations to star, and word has recently come out that Anne Hathaway (The Princess Diaries, The Devil Wears Prada, The Dark Knight Rises) is in talks for the female lead.

A couple of months ago we heard that Chris Hemsworth was also looking to possibly join the film, but as of right now nothing has been officially set in stone for either of the actors.
Robopocalypse will be an adaptation of a novel written by Daniel H. Wilson, the screenplay for which was written by Drew Goddard (Cabin in the Woods, Cloverfield). What happens when we make our robots too smart and they develop self-awareness? Naturally they try to kill us. Anyone who has seen any amount of sci-fi movies knows that. So yeah, Daniel Wilson’s “Robopocalypse” is nothing you haven’t seen or read before. Hell, there’s an entire movie franchise called “Terminator” based entirely around this exact same premise. Nevertheless, “Robopocalypse” is still one hell of a story, and should make a fantastic movie. The book is currently being developed for the big screen with Steven Spielberg set to direct. I can’t think of a better director than Spielberg, because “Robopocalypse” is essentially “War of the Worlds” + “A.I.” + “Saving Private Ryan”, all movies that Spielberg directed. It’s metallic war madness, following a disparate group of human survivors as they try to survive the first days of the robot uprising (called Zero Hour), before eventually fighting back...

Director Steven Spielberg is looking to cast Thor star Chris Hemsworth in his upcoming sci-fi epic Robopocalypse. The director met with the actor and decided that he's the man for the job! Deadline says that there's no official offer yet, but you can bet it's coming. Hemsworth is blowing up Hollywood right now, and you can thank Thor for that. He's just going to get bigger and bigger, it's not going to hurt that he's working with Spielberg either. Not only is he a big good looking guy, but he can act too.
Robopocalypse is an adaptation of a novel written by Daniel H. Wilson, and the screenplay was written by Drew Goddard (Cabin in the Woods, Cloverfield). There's an incredible team of talent behind this movie so far, and Hemsworth will make a great addition.
