Here's a short subject from the Department of Defense that purports to tell you about radiation, fallout from nuclear bombs, and how it's not such a big deal. Some immediate precautions would have to be taken, like taking your coat off when you get home, and washing your vegetables before eating them, but who doesn't do that anyway? Also, you might have to stay in a fallout shelter of some variety for a month or two, but apparently that's more like a vacation than anything else. Also, there's always been radiation, so it's no big deal.
This is, of course, the optimistic view, and bizarrely so. There's always been cyanide in fruit seeds like almonds, and in very low amounts, they're not likely to kill you if you're healthy. That doesn't mean that in large doses they're benign, and there are people to whom small doses can be deadly.
