- An ordinary 60 plus couple - Vidhyadhar Patwardhan and his wife are forced to search for their faith in human values and society after the death of their only son Amar. In the process they undergo the most testing struggle of their lives.
- Vidyadhar Patwardhan lives a middle-class life with his wife, Sumitra. They have a son, Amar, who lives abroad in London, U.K., and it is through his income that the family lives on. Then Amar returns home with Jenny Mayer, his fiancée, and both are welcomed. Both do not look kindly upon Amar's habit to drink. A devastated Vidyadhar and Sumitra arrange for his funeral, and thereafter follow-up with the police as to the conviction of the killer, who has been identified as Harshvardhan Kadam. The police version is quite different from that of Vidyadhar, and they claim that Amar and Jenny were involved in smuggling drugs, a fight ensued, and Amar was killed. Subsequently, two men are killed in a police encounter, after confessing that they had killed Amar over a fight over drugs. Then Jenny is arrested for possession of drugs and lodged in a cell. She is subsequently released, and returns home to London. The trial begins and ends with the judgment that Harshvardhan is not guilty, leaving Vidyadhar and Sumitra questioning whether Amar & Jenny were really involved in drugs, or is it all being made to appear that he was.—rAjOo (gunwanti@hotmail.com)
- The film begins with Amar (John Abraham) narrating the story of his family and himself. Amar is the son of Vidyadhar (Amitabh Bachchan) & Sumitra Patwardhan (Sharmila Tagore), a middle-class couple in India. Vidyadhar was a retired employee of Air India, and Sumitra was the principal of a school. Vidyadhar is a diabetic and Sumitra has high BP. Vidyadhar's friends include Sumit Arora (Prem Chopra), Sunil Barucha (Shivaji Satam) & Rahu Shetty (Sharat Saxena). They have a simple and non-complicated life.
The most pressing issue in their life is when the trash vendor sells his shop to a garage mechanic. The shop is very close to Vidyadhar's house, and he is not able to take his daytime naps due to the noise. Ali Asgar (Sanjay Dutt) is the new owner of the shop, who refuses to back down. Vidyadhar is worried as Ali taunts him every time he passes his shop. Vidyadhar stops spending time at home to avoid being irritated by Ali and his shop. Sumitra takes matters into her own hands and hits Ali with a cane in his shop and tells him to stop taunting Vidyadhar. Ali gets emotional, as this is the first time someone has treated him like a kid.
Amar lives and works in London, and he sends some of his salary to them for their support. One day Amar returns home with Jenny Mayer (Anusha Dandekar), his girlfriend, and announces his intention to marry her. Amar was in a live-in relationship with Jenny. Initially reluctant, his parents are pleased and happy for the two. Sumitra gets Amar and Jenny married in a local temple.
Amer recounts how he met Jenny in a pub, when he saved from a drunk man who was trying to force himself upon her. Jenny herself was very drunk and was there alone, so Amar took her to his place where she slept the night on a couch. Jenny and Amar start dating and fall in love.
One day, Amar goes out celebrating with his friends, whilst his parents and Jenny organize a surprise birthday party for him.
Outside a pub, Amar witnesses a murder and, while trying to apprehend the killer and refusing to let him leave the parking lot, he gets mortally wounded in the fight. Amar's 3 friends were at the parking lot when he was shot. Amar succumbs in the hospital. The assailant is identified as Harshwardhan Kadam (Amitabh Dayal), son of minister Mr. Kadam (Viju Khote). Harshwardhan shot his girlfriend Sandhya in the parking lot of the pub, as she was pregnant with his child and refused to have an abortion. She had threatened to expose Harshwardhan is he refused to marry her.
Soon, the police led by Inspector Desai (Sachin Khedekar) start covering the case up. Amar is implicated in false charges of drug peddling. One random person is picked up by the police and handed the murder weapon to get his fingerprints on it. Witnesses and close friends of Amar too give false statements. Sahil was Amar's friend and the key eyewitness in the case. He lies in court and says that he never saw the killer clearly. The torture doesn't end there, as police try to implicate Jenny as his accomplice and threaten to sexually assault her. Vidyadhar takes the help of British consul Mr. Jack Anderson (Tom Alter) to get Jenny released from custody.
Vidyadhar decides that it is not good for Jenny to live there, especially since she is expecting Amar's child. Vidyadhar bails her out and implores her to return before she is locked up for good. Vidyadhar and Sumitra use all their meager financial resources to fight for justice. The lawyer Vaswani also gives up and tells Vidyadhar that they have lost the case. Harshwardhan goes blame free meanwhile and Vidyadhar decides to seek justice on his own after he is failed to get any sort of justice. Ali Asgar (Sanjay Dutt), a former goon and mechanic, also an acquaintance of Patwardhans, decides to help them. Soon, Ali succeeds in procuring a gun for Vidyadhar.
Vidyadhar decides to confront Harshwardhan in his own office. Harshwardhan cockily lets him enter in and starts taunting him. Vidyadhar accuses him and Harshwardhan arrogantly confesses his crimes, telling Vidyadhar that he cannot prove a thing. Vidyadhar points the gun at him, upon which Harshwardhan calls one of his guards. Vidyadhar guns down Harshwardhan and the guard enter in moments later Harshwardhan's cadaver collapses down. Harshwardhan's head guard lets Vidyadhar go, claiming that he won't be able to look at his family in the eye if he arrests Vidyadhar.
As a case stands up against Vidyadhar, where he reveals a pocket tape recorder on which the whole confession of Harshwardhan is recorded. Based on the proof, Amar and Vidyadhar are exonerated and set free. In an interview, Vidyadhar makes it clear that he doesn't intend to sue Mr. Kadam or police since Harshwardhan was killed and Vidyadhar knows Kadam's pain.
In the end, it is shown that Vidyadhar is living a happy life with Sumitra, Jenny, and his grandchild. Amar now explains that his father has always been a hero for him since childhood and he is feeling a little jealous of his son who is being treated with same affection with which Vidyadhar treated Amar in his childhood. The film ends with Amar disappearing in light claiming now he can rest in peace.
