Howling Gunner
This game is one of my favorite light gun games, it was also one of the one's that helped get the light gun genre in video games rolling. This game is another childhood favorite as a kid I was into the action films, thorough sadly I could really watch that many as I was still to young. Though at times I was able to work around it. But anyway, this is beside the point, even though I wasn't able to watch them I did see a lot of the trailer which were always awesome because at the time it was the closest I was ever able to watch them.
This was obviously inspired by the films "Rambo First Blood: Part 2" and "Commando" which is cool since I like both films and, on a side, note the Rambo franchise also had a slew of video games adaptations itself but that's another story. Playing the game really blew me away because I'm a fan of action films and this game instead of playing as some action hero character gave me the opportunity to be the action hero for once. I'll admit sometimes playing the game I always imagined myself as Rambo or even Flint from "G.I. Joe" since the main protagonist looks like the character and on a side note "G.I. Joe" never had a light gun video game adaption which is strange.
The game is pretty much a shooting gallery only here the targets are shooting back at you. Like in any shooting gallery each of the enemies pop up and move within certain planes. From the tanks, choppers, and enemy soldiers that just come left, right, up and down, so yeah you pretty much have your hands full.
The animation is very good really like the detail, mainly on the enemy soldiers where most of them are actually unique so there's enough variety, like one of the enemy soldiers looks like Duke from "G.I. Joe" or Arnold Scherzinger as he is always coming out shooting at you with a machine gun one handed and wearing a blue bullet proof vest. He's a little touch to take down as you must hit him in the head to do it. Always like the close-up targets because you can see their faces and expressions, it just cool. Though this always made me react immediately as I race to nail the close-range target before he could nail me.
I even like the design of the arcade cabinet because on the cabinet there is an attached light gun that is in the form of an Uzi. That was another thing that blew me away about the game because any of us that we're still too young to hold a gun we for once got to experience or at least close to experiencing handling one. Anyway, your pretty much armed with your standard bullets and rockets.
The trigger control is spot on as its responsive and controllable as you can fire as many as you want and need to, either in controlled burst or full auto. There is a red button near the end of the Uzi you can tap with your thumb or forefinger if your left handed, that is for the rockets which are very useful in taking down not just most of the vehicles just to save ammo but just to help widdle the odds around you down faster in case things get harry. However, you have a limited supply of both ammo and rockets so you need to always not just keep your eye on your enemies but also for loose ammo and rockets to restock and keep your supply from going dry.
Each of the levels are slightly different as you go simply from point A to B, but in each of the levels you sometimes have a different objective like protecting hostages. But mainly in each there is a quota you must complete in order to pass to the next level. On your right there is a gauge on how many enemy soldiers and types of vehicles you must kill and destroy. Though you must watch for the innocent civilians who in the light gun shooters always stupidly run into the line of fire, but if you hit some of them you lose a portion of life as a penalty so avoid at all costs.
One bonus in the game is if you hit certain random objects which are the hidden treasures in the game, like if you shoot down a coconut and then hit it while it's still dropping down in midair your rewarded points. Or even some of the birds in the air you hit one and it turns into an ammo clip. This is cool because it really gives you a step up in the game and causes you to uncover more secrets.
But of course, one thing about the game that is to me the real star is the sound effects which are to me music to my ears. Just the sound of the gun, hitting the vehicles, the explosions, and even the sound of enemies getting killed was just cool and really enhanced the feel that you were in an action movie.
Operation Wolf howls with excitement.
