Unlike any other genre, horror offers perhaps one of the most unique keys to the human psyche, especially human fears. Leading back to Romanticist poets and authors, the disruption of the human sphere and the supernatural has always proven to be a link to social phobias and trauma. Logically, horror does not need to follow the rules based on reality, which is interestingly – and somewhat ironically – an aspect readers and audiences sometimes expect the genre to do. Living through the notions of the narrative with the obligatory “I would never go there.” or “Don’t go into the basement.” is part of the excitement, but also the various criticisms of how a story could never happen like this.
However, this is not what horror is supposed to. According to Japanese screenwriter Konaka Chiaki, who wrote the script for Takashi Shimizu’s “Marebito” (2004), real-life terror does not follow any sensible rules,...

As the boom of J-horror was slowly declining, the movement, which became popular for its blend of contemporary themes and Asian folklore, was looking at new shores that would provide new ideas. While directors such as Hideo Nakata were busy applying their stories within a western framework, sometimes with them helming the American remakes of their own films even, others, like Kiyoshi Kurosawa attempted to expand the borders of J-horror expressing concerns and fear about at that time upcoming technologies like the internet. Being one of the most popular names associated with J-horror after his film “Ju-on: The Grudge” (2002) as well as its sequel, Takashi Shimizu would release “Marebito” the same year as the American remake of the film which had put his name on the map of international audiences.

Director Tsukamoto Shinya garnered a cult following in 1989 following the release of his cyberpunk classic, Tetsuo the Iron Man. The filmmaker has subsequently released two sequels to his breakthrough hit while expressing considerable talent in a range of genres, earning acclaim for the likes of Tokyo Fist, Bullet Ballet and A Snake of June. Not limiting himself to directing Tsukamoto frequently stars in his own work, as well as appearing in films from some of Japan's leading contemporary artists, including roles in Takashi Miike's Ichi the Killer and Takashi Shimizu's Marebito. Fires On The Plain is the latest film from the director, a grueling look at the final desperate days of the soldiers of the Japanese Imperial Army stationed in the Philippines during...

It's been a rough few years for Japanese director Takashi Shimizu. The former protege of Kiyoshi Kurosawa burst on to the international scene in 2002 with Ju-On, the terrifying theatrical expansion of his previous two part video series. Shimizu would cement his reputation in 2004 with the one-two punch of the eerie Japanese indie Marebito and the big budget Hollywood remake of Ju-On, The Grudge. The J-horror movement that Shimizu had been a leader of was already fading at that point but it didn't seem to matter, he was a director on top of his game who seemed - thanks to Marebito - to have some diversity to his voice and some variety to the stories he wanted to tell.Well, it's eight years later....

Bottom line? Flying is some scary shit. No matter how many plane rides we take, there's always an uneasy feeling of terror present, beckoning us to cross our fingers and hope for the best. Some flights, however, are just damned from the get-go.
The boys at Bloody Disgusting are reporting that Amy Smart and "True Blood"/Knights of Badassdom's Ryan Kwanten are both in talks to land lead roles in CBS Films' Flight 7500, the claustrophobic thriller to be directed by Takashi Shimizu (The Grudge, Marebito).
The project's based on a pitch from Shimizu and "is set on a trans-Pacific airliner from Los Angeles to Tokyo where the passengers encounter what seems to be a supernatural force."

I expected this one to be a little strange, but I never thought it would look quite like this. After smashing a poor, defenseless little rabbit with a brick, a kid gets pulled into a hole by a giant bunny hellbent on revenge. The kid’s mom immediately begins a blood-soaked quest to retrieve her son, an adventure that looks downright eerie and more than a little odd. Takashi Shimizu’s “Rabbit Horror 3D” resembles “Marebito” more than it does “Ju-On”, though I’m not going to complain about that one bit. “Marebito”, while undeniably strange, was one hell of a trip, and I’m anxious for Shimizu to deliver something highly unusual once again. The Grudge, Marebito and Ju-On director Takashi Shimizu is coming back to America. But he may not enjoy the flight, not if it's anything like the pitch for his just-announced English language project Flight 75.Still in very early days - just a treatment at the moment - Flight 75 will tell the story of a cross-Pacific flight plagued by some sort of supernatural force. While we await U.S. distribution news, here is the UK trailer for Shock Labyrinth 3D , the latest picture from Takashi Shimizu ( Ju-On , Marebito ). Advance word of mouth hasn't been good, but we're curious nonetheless to see what Shimizu is bringing us. In addition to the trailer, we have a photo gallery that is now open. Shimizu reportedly used a real amusement park as his backdrop. He's now at work on Rabbit Horror 3D , an Alice in Wonderland -inspired thriller. Shock is hitting UK DVD on January 31.

Although his “Ju-On” has gotten off track as of late, Takashi Shimizu’s actually a fantastic storyteller. The man’s greatest achievement is his 2004 effort “Marebito”, a little-known and criminally-underrated horror flick that stars cult Japanese director Shinya Tsukamoto as a man who stumbles across a woman who may or may not be a vampire. As goofy as that premise may sound, it’s actually a solid feature, and worthy of investigation by anyone who is growing increasingly bored with what passes for horror these days. However, I’m definitely a little skeptical about Shimizu’s latest project, the strangely-titled “Rabbit Horror 3D”. The film tells the peculiar tale of a girl who ventures into an extremely bizarre universe with the help of a mysterious stuffed rabbit. “Alice in Wonderland” by way of Shimizu? I’m game. However, I’m not particularly fond of the director’s current obsession with three-dimensional motion pictures,...

Takashi Shimizu of Ju-On and Marebito fame is back with a 3D effort called The Shock Labyrinth which you may remember us mentioning around the American Film Market last year. A German trailer has premiered online and you can watch it below past the plot synopsis. One rainy night, Yuki, a girl missing for 10 years, mysteriously appears. Her friends, Ken, Motoki, Rin, and sister Miyu are confused by her sudden return and uneasily welcome her home. Later that same night, Yuki suddenly faints and is rushed by her loyal friends to the hospital. But the hospital they arrive at turns out to be a decayed and terrifying place...a labyrinth. Trapped within the labyrinth, the horror truly begins for the young friends.

It's time for another installment of Fangoria Musick's Lists Of Doom - the column where we track down some of your favorite (or soon-to-be favorite) bands to get their thoughts on on the world of horror.
For number 15, we caught up with Mika Andre, bassist of the French band, Eryn Non Dae, whose Stateside debut Hydra Lernaia will arrive in-stores on June 23rd via Metal Blade Records. Mika's List of Doom is a bit different than what we usually see, with a strong lean toward Asian Horror.
Mika, the stage is yours...
I’m really into Asian horror movies because of their very calm and restrained atmosphere. Even if it’s a bit overrated now, there’s something very unique Ring had brought at the beginning; a kind of deep esthetic beauty in the horror.
