Excellent humor, good fun albeit the strange selection of guests
You have to remember that this is a roast and is supposed to be a crass, drunken, non-P.C., ass-kicking romp in the style of the old Brat Pack roasts. If you start with that perspective then it was pure hilarity.
The Blue Collar Guys were great as usual although Larry was a little off of his game. Since this was a roast it did tend to favor Ron White who can get downright nasty when he needs to. The guys had to leave their "mom and apple pie" material at the door, so I can see where some of their more mild-mannered fans may have been disappointed.
I never really watched the "Tough Crowd" show but I really enjoyed Colin Quinn and the gang's roastings. Lots of great zingers for Jeff and plenty of cheap shots to go around for all of the roasters. Nobody was spared from the carnage.
The George Bush impersonator was phenomenal! His mannerisms and gestures were spot on. George W. should hire this guy to fill in for him when he needs a nap.
The low-lights for me were the video clips sent in by Denis Leary, Jay Mohr and Anna Nicole Smith. How was any of that funny? Then several times they showed Denis Leary in the crowd laughing. Did they actually insert those clips into the show from another performance? I mean he wasn't there at the roast, so why did they show him laughing in the crowd? That was bizarre.
Like others, I was surprised by the musical choice and the massacre of a classic Southern rock anthem. But they did change a couple of verses for Foxworthy, which made it almost bearable.
Overall I give the roasters high grades for a very enjoyable show. Although I know it would have been much better if the Comedy Channel actually had a budget of more than $20 for the show. I mean I liked the roasters but WTF do the guys from "Tough Crowd" have to do with Foxworthy? Other than the fact that they are still under contract with the Comedy Channel.
I think a lot of the Blue Collar fans would have enjoyed seeing Jeff roasted by other Southern redneck celebrities like Billy Bob Thornton, Dolly Parton, Toby Keith, Richard Petty, Reba, etc. Your typical Foxworthy fans would have eaten it up. Drew Carrey also should have been invited since he has appeared on several Blue Collar TV episodes and had his own roast not long ago.
Even with a few speed bumps along the way, this was still a very funny show that I thoroughly enjoyed. A nice change of pace for the Blue Collar guys.
