- Depicts cross-cultural romance with ups and downs.
- During the British rule in India, several Indians were lured by the British to travel to distant Mauritius where they would have a better life. Upon reaching this island, the Indians were enslaved, tortured and made to labor in what is now known as the "Coolie Ghat". After the British left India, the Indians in Mauritius decided to continue to live there along with other nationals from different countries. Amongst the Indian family was the Sinha family, consisting of Shekhar, his wife Sandhya and son, Jai. Jai attends culinary classes where he meets with beautiful Swede, Sophie Besson, and after a few misunderstandings both fall in love with each other. Sophie introduces Jai to her parents, Norman and Claire. Norman who used to one of the slave-masters in the olden days, considers Indians quite inferior, does not approve of Jai, and would like Sophie to marry Gordon. On the other hand, Sandhya gets a shock when she finds out that her son wants to marry a Roman Catholic, and does not approve of Sophie at all. Sophie is adamant and refuses to change her mind about Jai, both plan to run away together. On the stipulated night, Jai does not show up, and a heart-broken Sophie returns home and agrees to marry Gordon. An angered Norman uses his contacts to ensure that Shekhar loses his job and will not find any employment in Mauritius. When Sophie and Jai meet again, Jai is in the company of a lovely young doctor named Gayatri Pandey, a Hindu Brahman, his fiancée, and Sophie is invited to their marriage. The question remains why did Jai fail to keep his appointment with Sophie, and why did he consent to marry Gayatri?—rAjOo (gunwanti@hotmail.com)
- Indians were brought to Mauritius as bonded slave labor by the Brits. Eventually the Indians became free and adopted the new country as their home. But they were treated as second class citizens.
Shekhar Sinha (Amitabh Bachchan), his wife Sandhaya (Revathi) and their son Jai (Karan Sharma) are one of the many Hindu Indian families living in Mauritius. Jai ventures out to Stockholm, Sweden to obtain an education in culinary studies and incidentally meets Sophie Besson (Annabelle Wallis), a Roman Catholic Franco-Mauritian. Jai meets Sophie as a bet with his friend to get the last copy of a music CD from her, which she purchased from a store. Jai poses as blind to gain her sympathy, get the CD and win the bet. Jai lives in the same dorm as Sophie (as they go to the same culinary college) and eventually she finds that Jai is not blind at all. Jai is a better cook than Sophie and this gains her attention. Sophie and Jai fight and Sophie injures her leg. Jai cooks her breakfast in bed. They start meeting regularly and soon fall in love.
Sophie is worried about introducing Jai to her parents. Norman, Sophie's father, is racist and has recently won a case against Indian immigrants who lay a claim to the land that they had tilled for many generations. Sophie tries to break up with Jai, but he is adamant. Eventually Sophie realizes that she cant live without Jai either. They agree to make it work with their parents.
Shekhar finds Jai dating Sophie in Mauritius and is supportive of their match. Jai is introduced to Sophie's parents, Norman (Malcolm Stoddard) and Claire Besson (Claire Oberman). Norman (a large land owner in Mauritius) instantly disapproves of him (because of his ethnicity). Jai and Sophie got the parents to meet at Norman's over a surprise dinner. The dinner goes badly as Sandhaya wont eat anything and Norman keeps puffing his cigar, irritating Sandhaya. Sophie declares that she loves Jai. Norman calls Shekhar into his study and makes it clear that he sees all Indians as servants and will never agree to a match between Jai and Sophie. Shekhar gives Norman a piece of his mind, calls him rude and walks away.
Jai feels his father and mother would approve of Sophie. Unfortunately Sandhaya disapproves her (because of her Catholic faith and the fact that she is from a different culture and background) and tells Jai to end his relationship with her. Norman gets Shekhar fired from his job at the bank. Shekhar is still supportive and explains that Sandhaya is afraid of losing Jai to Sophie and is insecure.
The lovers plan to elope but Jai fails to turn up on the stipulated wedding time in Church. This is because Sandhaya has a heart attack when Shekhar tells her the news that Jai is going to elope with Sophie. Jai was on the way to the church, when he finds that Shekhar was fired from his job and his mom had a heart attack. He goes straight to the hospital. Sophie reluctantly returns to her parents to marry the boy of their choice (Gordon). Meanwhile Gayatri Pandey (Bhumika Chawla) is the doctor attending to Sandhaya at the hospital. Sandhaya figures that Gayatri is an orphan from Allahabad and in Mauritius on a medical exchange program. Gayatri is invited to the Holi function by Shekhar and Sandhaya. Gayatri is supposed to leave for India in 2 weeks as her program is coming to an end. Sandhaya wants Jai to marry Gayatri.
Gaurav Gulati (Manuj Tilakraj Gulati) is Jai and Sophie's college friend and he tries to bring them together. But Jai never tells Sophie about what happened that day and Sophie believes that Jai didn't not come to the church as he never wanted to be with her. Jai now agrees to marry Gayatri. Gaurav brings Sophie and Jai together and Sophie realizes that she loves Jai.
By this time Jai is engaged to Gayatri Pandey (Bhumika Chawla), to fulfill his mother's wish (who has asthma). Sophie wants to know why Jai did not turn up and Gaurav tells her the truth. Meanwhile, Gayatri learns of Jai and Sophie's love (Gaurav also goes and tells Gayatri about how Jai is sacrificing his love for the sake of his mother) and comes up with a ruse of Sophie's false pregnancy that forces Sophie and Jai's family to accept them as a couple. Norman is devastated to hear the news and his first instinct is to disown Sophie, but Claire talks sense into Norman. Norman meets Shekhar and agrees to bury the hatchet. Gayatri explains to Sandhaya that it is wrong to get Jai married to her, when he loves Sophie. Shekhar eventually finds out the truth that Sophie is not preggers and that it was a fake news planted by Gayatri to get the parents to accept the match. Shekhar forgives Gayatri.
The film ends with Gayatri leaving Mauritius.
