Americans can’t get enough of processed corn. They eat it for breakfast, in cereal form, and all throughout the day, snacking on cookies and crackers and chips, often washing it down with soda.
Premiering at the SXSW Film Festival, “Flamin’ Hot” tells the backstory of Frito-Lay’s insanely popular, ultra-spicy line of snack chips — the ones that singe your taste buds and stain your fingers a radioactive red — as marketing guru Richard Montañez lays it out in his memoir, “A Boy, a Burrito, and a Cookie: From Janitor to Executive.” After a rough start selling drugs and hustling on the streets of East Los Angeles, Montañez got a job cleaning the machines at Frito-Lay’s Rancho Cucamonga plant and worked his way up to head of Multicultural marketing. Along the way, he may or may not have invented the recipe for Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, Doritos, et al.

Exclusive: Jesse Garcia (Flamin’ Hot) will star opposite Eva Longoria and George Lopez in the Disney+ film Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.
The project marks his return to the franchise, having previously portrayed the character of Dwayne in the Miguel Arteta film of the same name released in 2014.
Garcia will portray Frank Garcia, a happily married vegan chef, and father of Mia, David, and the titular Alexander. Frank clashes with his family when he refuses to modify his recipes to more traditional Mexican food even if it means missing out on opportunities.
From writer Matt Lopez and director Marvin Lemus, Alexander tells the story of 11-year-old Alexander Garcia who thinks he has the worst luck in the world. When his family sets off on a road trip to California, he’s pretty sure disaster awaits at every corner. His anxiety only increases when a family secret is revealed.

Eva Longoria’s prestige project “Flamin’ Hot,” about the inventor of the spicy Cheetos snack, has found its stars in actors Jesse Garcia and Annie Gonzalez.
An award-winning actor and prolific TV director, Longoria is ramping up to a feature directorial era with the Searchlight project, which tells the inspirational story of Richard Montañez. A janitor at Frito Lay, Montañez took inspiration from his Mexican American heritage to create the wildly popular snack Flamin’ Hot Cheetos.
Garcia will play Montañez and Gonzalez will portray his wife Judy. Additionally, Linda Yvette Chavez has taken a pass on the script from writer Lewis Colick (“October Sky”). Chavez is the acclaimed creator of the Netflix original series “Gentefied,” and also adapted the upcoming directorial debut from America Ferrera, the Netflix original “I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter.”
Longoria said it has been “my biggest priority to make sure we are telling Richard Montañez’s story authentically.

The narrative feature “Coda” and the documentary “Summer of Soul” swept the top categories at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival, winning the Grand Jury Prizes and also taking the audience awards in the U.S. dramatic and documentary competitions.
“Coda,” director Sian Heder’s coming-of-age story in which Emilia Jones plays the only hearing member of a deaf family, also won an award for its ensemble, many of them deaf actors who performed in ASL. Its wins come three days after the film set a record for the largest sale in Sundance history, a $25 million deal with Apple.
“Summer of Soul,” which like “Coda” screened on the festival’s opening night, is a documentary by Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson built around long-unseen concert footage from the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, a six-weekend event that first-time director Questlove uses as a launching pad to explore race relations and Black culture in that tumultuous time.

Shelley Morrison, who passed away Sunday at the age of 83, was best known for playing Karen Walker’s (Megan Mullally) opinionated maid Rosario Salazar during the original run of the Emmy-winning NBC comedy.
Morrison made her debut as Rosario in the season one finale. She quickly became a fan favorite and was promoted to a series regular at the start of Season 3, the only actor ever to join the original series regular quartet of Debra Messing, Eric McCormack, Mullally and Sean Hayes. Morrison briefly reprised her role on the 2016 election-themed Will & Grace reunion video, which led to the series’ revival on NBC.
While the creators wanted Morrison to be in the new seasons, she had retired from acting. “It was with a heavy heart that she gave us that information and that we received it,” Will & Grace co-creator Max Mutchnick said in August 2017.

Televisa’s Fabrica de Sueños (Dream Factory), launched last year under the leadership of Patricio Wills, has begun to reap ratings dividends from its anthology series of re-versioned hit Televisa telenovelas of the ‘80s and ‘90s.
Founded under the slogan ‘Rewriting History,’ Fabrica de Sueños kicked off to stellar ratings in September with “La Usurpadora” (“The Usurper”).
Its second series, “Cuna de Lobos” (“Cradle of Wolves”), which debuted Oct. 7 and stars Spain’s Paz Vega (“Rambo: Last Blood”), has not disappointed. "We have something no one else could share... Don't you know that?" Netflix has unveiled the first official trailer for an indie thriller titled Earthquake Bird, which is premiering at the London Film Festival this month. The latest from English filmmaker Wash West, the film is about a young woman living in Tokyo who becomes the prime suspect in a horrific murder when her friend goes missing in the wake of a tumultuous love triangle. Alicia Vikander stars as Lucy Fly, with a cast including Riley Keough, Naoki Kobayashi, Kiki Sukezane, Yoshiko Sakuma, Kazuhiro Muroyama, Ken Yamamura, Crystal Kay, Akiko Iwase, and Jack Huston. This looks like yet another standard peculiar love-triangle murder-mystery psychological thriller, but it doesn't seem the Japanese locale makes much of a difference. I wish this looked better than it does so far, because the idea for it does sound quite appealing. Here's the official trailer...

Elle Époch: Westmoreland Recuperates a Literary Giant in Appealingly Frank Biopic
After winning the Sundance Grand Jury Prize for the 2005 breakout film Quinceañera, co-directors Wash Westmoreland and Richard Glatzer brought Julianne Moore to her Oscar win for 2014’s Still Alice. After the passing of Glatzer in 2015, Westmoreland went on to make his first solo directorial outing with Colette, a biopic of the iconic French literary giant starring Keira Knightley in turn-of-the-century Paris.
Arguably one of the most notable French literary figures, particularly from the nostalgia tinged Belle Époque era, Colette’s most notable works to English language speakers are those which were adapted into high profile films, such as the Best Picture Winner Gigi (1958) from Vincente Minnelli, or more recently, Stephen Frears’ collapsed mounting of her Cheri (2009) novels starring Michelle Pfeiffer.…...

Here's Murtada speculating very early on the 2017 Oscar race.
There’s usually a real life person in the best actress lineup. It’s not as prevalent as it is in best actor - 4 this year. But we do have Joy Mangano (Jennifer Lawrence). Last year there were Jane Hawking (Felicity Jones) and Cheryl Strayed (Reese Witherspoon). Recently we got everyone from Philomena Lee (Judi Dench) to Marilyn Monroe (Michelle Williams) and Edith Piaf (Marion Cotillard) and most famously The Queen (Helen Mirren) and her 80s nemesis Margaret Thatcher (Meryl Streep). Now we have two more possible candidates for the 2017 Oscar race as two interesting biopics were announced this week with two actresses well known to the Academy. French writer Colette (to be played by Keira Knightley) and Jesus disciple Mary Magdalene (Rooney Mara).
Colette in 1920s

Dancin' Dan continues our classic Sundance celebration with a tenth anniversary of a film that should really have a bigger fan base.
Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland's Quinceañera is one of those films that is inextricable from the story of how it was made: The two moved to the Echo Park area of Los Angeles, a primarily working-class Latino neighborhood that was rapidly gentrifying. After being invited to their neighbor's fifteenth birthday party - a Latin American right of passage known as a quinceañera - they were amazed by the elaborate ceremony and thought it would make a great setting for a film. Later, when thinking about making a drama partially based on their experience as a white gay couple in a gentrifying neighborhood, the idea resurfaced. And the rest, as they say, is history: Quinceañera won both the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award for dramatic feature.

Debbie Tucker Green’s dreamy, ambiguous urban parable is rooted in utterly believable performances
Miracles may be an everyday occurrence, but in a secular age they can be less of a blessing than a curse. Films as diverse as Carl Theodor Dreyer’s Ordet, Denys Arcand’s Jesus of Montreal and, more recently, Dietrich Brüggemann’s Stations of the Cross have wrestled with the anachronistic intersection between the domestic and the allegedly divine, with results ranging from comedy to tragedy. In terms of subject matter, playwright Debbie Tucker Green’s beautifully ambiguous debut feature perhaps bears comparison with Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland’s 2006 oddity Quinceañera (aka Echo Park La), in which a Mexican-American girl approaching her 15th birthday discovers she is pregnant, despite her certainty that she is still a virgin.
In Second Coming, Jackie (Nadine Marshall) is a middle-aged mum with a history of miscarriages whose family life...

Julianne Moore’s terror at watching her own emotional and intellectual life slip away is palpable, and much scarier to me than any slasher movie. I’m “biast” (pro): love Julianne Moore
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
I have not read the source material
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
This is my own personal Worst Possible Nightmare magicked into being and splashed up on the screen in all its larger-than-life, oh-look-it’s-happening-to-a-movie-star heightened reality. Movies about insane axe murderers and methodical serial killers do not frighten me. Still Alice scares the shit out of me.
And, of course, its horror is far more likely to impact you or me than anything that runs around in a slasher movie. Except it would be much, much worse than what we see here.
Julianne Moore has early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. Not really Julianne Moore the actual person,...

Shrouded in shadows, Doom-Head is featured in creepy fashion in the first still from Rob Zombie's 31. Also included in our latest round-up is a casting update for the second season of From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series and an exclusive excerpt from Doug Lavers’ sci-fi thriller, Rekindling of Hope.
Rob Zombie's 31: Played by Richard Brake, Doom-Head dominates the first official still from Rob Zombie's 31 (see below). Since the news broke earlier this month that Malcolm McDowell had joined the cast of 31 as Father Murder, more actors have joined the film's ranks:
Pancho Moler (2005's Bad News Bears, American Horror Story: Freak Show) plays Sick-Head. Jeff Daniel Phillips (The Lords of Salem, Halloween 2) portrays Roscoe, "the ass-kicking carney mechanic of Venus Virgo’s traveling show." Jane Carr (Curb Your Enthusiasm, How I Met Your Mother) plays Sister Serpent, "a wicked cross of Satan meets Mother Goose.

Director Richard Glatzer, partner of Wash Westmoreland, died at age 63 on Tuesday, March 10 at their home in Los Angeles, California. Richard was afflicted by A.L.S. (motor neurone disease) when we spoke in New York last summer at the Trump Soho Hotel on Kevin Kline's portrayal of Errol Flynn in their film The Last Of Robin Hood. He communicated with me by tapping out his voiced response on an iPad. His wit came through in every answer he gave. He called Susan Sarandon "a young soul" and Dakota Fanning an "old" soul in their roles as Florence and Beverly Aadland.

They also wrote and directed The Last Of Robin Hood (2013) and double Sundance award winner Quinceañera (2006). Here is his tribute to Glatzer: I am devastated. Today is a sad day in the world of Independent Cinema. Richard Glatzer, the co-director and screenwriter of “Still Alice,” has passed away after a four-year battle with Als. Born on January 28, 1952 in Flushing Queens, Glatzer first came to prominence with his directorial debut “Grief.” The 1993 drama premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and was partly inspired by his experience with the loss of his partner, Donald Ray Berry, to AIDS. In 1995, Glatzer met Wash Westmoreland and they became life partners. Their professional collaborations included “The Fluffer” (2001), “Quinceañera” (2006), which won the Sundance Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award, “The Last of Robin Hood” (2013) and the aforementioned “Still Alice.” The latter became the biggest success of Glatzer’s career and star Julianne Moore won the Best Actress Oscar for her performance at the Academy Awards last month. Glatzer was unable to attend the “Alice’s” world premiere at the 2014 Toronto Film Festival,...
