Reality television shows can take a wrong turn into horror especially when a demonic possession is involved.
From former reality TV producer Seth Grossman, “Inner Demons” follows an intervention-style reality show crew trying to film a sixteen-year-old girl fighting a drug addiction. However, she was suffering from something even more destructive—a demonic possession. The movie is an inquiry into the truth about her—with symptoms between the disturbing and scary intersection of insanity, addiction and true possession.
The film stars Lara Vosburgh and Morgan McClellan.
Latino-Review was granted an exclusive interview with Grossman to discuss the production of this horror film. We talked about the young actress, the worlds of addiction and demonic possession and even relating the behaviors of hyenas to demons.
“Inner Demons” is playing in select theaters and available on VOD today.

The first-look image above marks the first time I’ve heard anything about Yaron Zilberman‘s A Late Quartet, but after glancing through the splendid cast and the intriguing synopsis, this is a film that could quietly become one of 2012′s surprise offerings. It will mark Zilberman‘s narrative debut — his first feature-length project was the acclaimed 2004 documentary Watermarks. Along with Seth Grossman (The Elephant King), Zilberman has also co-wrote the New York City-based screenplay, which follows “the elder leader of a famed string quartet who is suffering from Parkinson’s Disease.” [The Playlist]
The cast includes Philip Seymour Hoffman, Catherine Keener, Christopher Walken, Imogen Poots, and Wallace Shawn — quite a prominent group for a little-known director, which could mean that they all were on the same page with respect to the project’s potential.
At this point, a 2011 release is almost out of the question, as we’ve heard nothing yet from the film’s distributor,...

After making his debut with the docu film Watermarks, about a group of Jewish swimmers who escaped the Nazis and meet 60 plus years after forming their defiant sports club, Yaron Zilberman is now moving ahead with his fiction feature debut. Penned by Zilberman and Seth Grossman (The Elephant King), the screenplay has been generating enough buzz that several A-listers are currently attached to the project and Ethan Hawke is the first to join A Late Quartet. The drama centers on a quartet whose members have performed together for 25 years and have to adjust to one of them retiring due to Parkinson's disease. Hawke will portray the second violinist whose desire for more solos leads him to have an affair with his jogging partner, leaving him remorseful and saddened by the state of his marriage. The actor just wrapped Pawel Pawlikowski's long awaited return, The Woman in the Fifth -...

Completed in 2006, it took The Elephant King three years to hit DVD, after spending its first two years touring the festival rounds. It’s one of those films that seem to belong only in film festivals, playing for a curious and typically forgiving artistic crowd, where its lofty storytelling and derelict characters would be better appreciated.
The intention is noble and reasonably sound—it’s a movie showing the other side of those “finding one’s self by traveling” stories. Often, these movies are about unhappy westerners who trot off to far-end foreign lands; discovering love, friendship, life lessons and destiny. The usual backpacker bullshit. In its own overwrought way, The Elephant King does explore something closer to reality, of young men wanting to escape from their responsibilities back home and party in a third world atmosphere where they as the White American enjoy the luxury of superiority over the exploitation of peasant locals,...

The Wizard Of Oz 70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector’S Edition (Warner Bros.) A true highlight in digital restoration technology, Warner Bros. restoration of the 1939 classic is cause for celebration. The Technicolor of the late ‘30s looks as though it was shot yesterday, and is especially stunning on Blu-ray, which was produced by scanning each of the film’s original Technicolor camera negatives using 8K resolution. From this scan, a final “capture” master was created in 4K, yielding twice the resolution seen in the master utilized for the film’s previous DVD release. Judy Garland’s Dorothy is charming as ever, and the entire cast: Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr, Jack Haley and Margaret Hamilton as the Wicked Witch, are all stellar. Four disc set bonuses include: Sing-along track; Documentaries and featurettes; Two 1914 silent films produced by Oz author L. Frank Baum, based on his stories...

I wish I had the chance to interview more compatriot composers here, but fact is there are very few Hungarian film composers I could talk to. Adam Balazs is one of them - although he lives in Los Angeles, he recently completed his first score to a Hungarian movie: Szíven szúrt ország is a documentary about the murder of a handball player whose tragic death brought forward many unresolved issues within the country. In addition to this new documentary, Ádám's new movie The Butterfly Effect 3: Revelations will have a soundtrack CD released pretty soon, which is a first for the composer (although several of his scores are available through download options). We discussed these and a number of other projects in the following interview:
How did your interest in music begin?
I grew up in a fully musical environment — my father is a distinguished classical composer and before her retirement,...

New York - How did a low-budget movie with no lead stars (save supporting actress Ellen Burstyn) get the highest opening per-screen gross in the country?
Seth Grossman's drama "The Elephant King" scored $16,000 at New York's Angelika Film Center this past weekend. The marketing efforts of producer Unison Films may provide a roadmap for struggling indies to get inexpensive attention in an overcrowded theatrical marketplace.
"King" stars a man (Tate Ellington) who travels to Thailand to bring his troubled older brother (Jonno Roberts) back to the Us at the behest of their mother (Burstyn), but ends up sidetracked by an unexpected romance. After its 2006 Tribeca Film Festival premiere and a round on the fest circuit, the filmmakers decided to handle its own promotion and ink a distribution-only service deal with Strand Releasing.
Unison head Emanuel Michael worked with Priority Films to contact Asian, Thai, drug and alcohol groups, and film schools at local universities.

As "The Elephant King" is making its way to theaters in New York on Friday, October 17, Unison Films bring forward two brand new clips promoting the romantic drama. The two clips each present a brothel scene where Jake is persuading Oliver to choose one of the girls he likes and a car scene in which Oliver's mother explains to him why she needs him to bring Jake home.
Telling a provocative and stirring story of two American brothers, "Elephant King" follows Oliver and Jake Hunt as they fall into an exotic world they don't fully understand. Sent by his mother to Thailand, Oliver has one mission in mind, luring his reckless, older brother to go back to the U.S. to face the fraud charges held against him. But, when he arrives in the intoxicating Thailand, he soon discovers that he falls deeply in love for the first time.

If you're planning to run off to Thailand to live a hedonistic life fueled by drugs, sex and kickboxing, be sure to see "The Elephant King" first.
You would not want to end up like Jake (Jonno Roberts), a slacker experiencing just such an existence.
He faces fraud charges back in New York, and his kvetching mother, played by the great Ellen Burstyn, desperately wants him to return to her arms. So she dispatches Jake's kid brother, the depressive Oliver (Tate Ellington), to Thailand to bring her wayward boy home.

Here at the Indie Spotlight, we treat your multiplex woes with a healthy dose of limited-release independent flicks. Being an indie film doesn't automatically make it better than a mainstream movie -- but if it's bad, at least you know it didn't cost $100 million to make. Frugality is important in these trying economic times.
It's a rather light week for indies, with just four for our perusal: The Elephant King, Filth and Wisdom, Tru Loved, and What Just Happened. There's also Morning Light, a documentary about competitive open-sea sailing, which, while not an indie (it's from Disney), is opening on a limited number of screens. Cinematical's Jeffrey M. Anderson has a review here.
And now, the rundown!

There's plenty to be pleased about this week as we get to spend time with both current and future presidents as part of an Ellen Burstyn double bill. There's also -- whisper it -- a movie based on a video game that might actually be worth seeing. Not to mention enough titular wordplay to make Richard Lederer's head spin. It's all just pun and games though, right?

Only about 20 percent of Americans own passports. Most Americans have never traveled overseas. (Some for financial reasons, but many out of fear or a lack of curiosity.) That means that the vast majority of Americans have never experienced the sense of being a foreigner. It's a valuable learning experience, this sense of being a stranger in a strange land. Not only does it teach tolerance for U.S. immigrants, but it teaches that the American perspective isn't unique. That's Seth Grossman, the director of this award-winning indie film. His post entitled the Politics of the Elephant King narrates some of his sentiments and experiences as an American living in a foreign country. His Thailand experience is one of the reasons why he made The Elephant King. - - - - - - Here's a review from David Bushman: This pensive, artfully crafted drama explores the twisted symbiosis between two American brothers-one domineering and nihilistic,...

An official trailer for an indie film titled The Elephant King has recently showed up online. I had no clue what this movie was about until I watched this trailer but found it entertaining enough to feature this weekend. Something about it looks very genuine and I like that about it, especially because I'm always in search of indie gems to fall in love with. The Elephant King is a provocative and stirring story of two American brothers, Oliver and Jake Hunt, adrift in an exotic world they don't fully understand. The only big actor in the cast is Ellen Burstyn, but the two brothers, specifically Tate Ellington, look like they do a fantastic job. If you've got nothing better to do this weekend, than give it a shot.
