We salute a much-loved Babylon 5 character, played by the much-missed Stephen Furst...
A little less than a year ago, in the wake of Jerry Doyle’s passing, Babylon 5 creator J.M. Straczynski made a passionate plea to the universe; too many B5 alumni had died already. Following the untimely deaths of Michael O’Hare, Richard Biggs, Andreas Katsulas, Jeff Conaway, and more recently Jerry Doyle, Straczynski was “goddamned tired of it” and he asked the universe to “knock it off for a while”.

On the occasion of their new mega-release on Leo Records, The Art of Perelman-Shipp Vols. 1-7 and their ensuing CD release party at Le Poisson Rouge on May 7th at 9:30 P.M. with Italian Surf Academy, I asked Ivo Perelman and Matthew Shipp the following questions.
Steve Dalanchinsky: How long have you been associated both as collaborators and friends?
When did you first encounter each other's music?
What projects are planned in the future after this mammoth undertaking?
Talk a bit about how your musical languages differ and where they merge/intermingle.
In brief, discuss your philosophies about free music inside/outside lyricism tune structures as well as spiritual/social ideas/ideals in the music.
Do you feel there are any relevant messages in the music if any?
Is there anything either of you want to add about the ongoing energies/ forces that unite and bind you to each...

Cue the handmaids.
The Tribeca Film Festival announced its second annual Tribeca TV program on Thursday and it includes a range of world premieres, popular show returns and a slate of independent pilots. One of the most highly anticipated debuts will be Hulu’s adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel, “The Handmaid’s Tale.”
Tribeca 2017 Lineup: New Fillms From Alex Gibney, Azazel Jacobs and Laurie Simmons Lead the Eclectic Mix
The series has been in the news lately, and not only because it will premiere soon. The dystopian story about a government forcing fertile women to become breeders for their high-ranking officials has struck a nerve among progressive women who are wary of having their health and reproductive rights controlled. Recently, protestors dressed in the handmaids’ red robes and white bonnets made an appearance in the Texas Senate gallery as its members were passing abortion legislation.

Of all the films that the Nolan brothers have collaborated on over the years, The Prestige is perhaps the most flawlessly and intricately designed. We asked Den Of Geek’s writers to recommend brilliant comedy shows that deserve to have more of a fuss made about them. Here they are...
Banging a drum about stuff we love is more or less our remit on Den Of Geek - hence what many readers have started referring to as the ‘inexplicably regular' appearance of Statham, squirrels and Harold Bishop from Neighbours on these pages.
To that end then, we asked our writers which comedy shows (past and present, UK or otherwise, on TV, radio, or online…) deserved more praise, and here are the ones they chose. You might already like them too, or you might discover something new to dig out and enjoy. That’s the fun of it.
Please note that this list isn’t ranked in any order, nor is it exhaustive. It’s compiled from the opinions of a group of different people,...

We're not going to lie - when we found out that Zoe Birkett was entering the Big Brother house earlier this week, the Digital Spy office got very excited indeed. What a blast from the past - and how much the "little podgy kid from Pop Idol with the dreadlocks" (her words, not ours) has grown up in the last 13 years. But it got us thinking - what happened to the other contestants? We put on our deerstalker, pulled out our magnifying glass and started digging...

So, it looks like we're not getting a Hillary Clinton miniseries after all. That's a shame. But fear not, miniseries fans, because there are so, so many miniseries in the works right now. So many. Here's but a sampling of what's to come.I would like to watch something about history. You're in luck: Discovery Channel has green-lit a Braveheart-era miniseries about the Scottish fight for independence in the thirteenth century. No, older! The megapopular Bible miniseries is getting a sequel (another testament, if you will), covering the parts that occur after Jesus' crucifixion. Older! Lifetime is working on a Cleopatra four-parter. Ack! Too old! Something about America. There's the remake of North and South that covers pre–Civil War through the Reconstruction. Set a little earlier than that is The Hour of Peril, the true story of how two detectives foiled a plan to assassinate Lincoln before his inauguration.

What a weird Emmys that was, right?
Although we saw some tremendous highs, like AMC’s Breaking Bad finally winning Outstanding Drama Series, there were also some major confusing upsets.
As much as I like Jeff Daniels, I don’t understand how he won Lead Actor in a Drama Series, and I hate that Elisabeth Moss lost in two categories — both of which she deserved to win. It also would’ve been nice to have seen ABC’s Modern Family finally lose its hold on the Outstanding Comedy Emmy, but there’s always next year.
However, I’m really happy for the fantastic Merritt Wever and Tony Hale, who won Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series and Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, respectively. Those were pleasant surprises, to say the least.
The Colbert Report winning Outstanding Variety Program was also a huge highlight of the night.

After 16 seasons, Joy Behar bid farewell to The View today. The hour-long goodbye episode, taped Thursday, was billed as “This Was Your Life on The View” and was hosted by comic Mario Cantone (Sex and the City). In addition to showing taped messages from stars and choice clips — including Behar buckling Tom Cruise onto the couch, her declining fashion advice from RuPaul, her walking away from Bill O’Reilly, and her getting a foot massage from Matthew McConaughey – producers lined up a slew of surprise in-studio guests.
First up was Regis Philbin, who told the story of how Behar...

The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced the nominations for the 65th Primetime Emmy Awards this morning.
The most notable news was that Netflix's "House of Cards" marks the first series released exclusively online to score nominations in the major categories.
"Game of Thrones," "Breaking Bad," "Homeland," "Downton Abbey," "Mad Men," and "The Good Wife" dominated the drama categories. "30 Rock," "Louie," "Modern Family," "Veep," "Girls," and "The Big Bang Theory" scored numerous nominations for comedy. "Behind The Candelabra," "Phil Spector," "Top Of The Lake" and "American Horror Story: Asylum" dominated the mini-series & movies categories.
Surprising shutouts this year include a massive snub of AMC's "The Walking Dead" and basically all of FX's line-up like "The Americans," "Archer," "Justified" and "Sons of Anarchy". Also missing out are the likes of Rob Lowe for "Behind the Candelabra," Corey Stoll for "House of Cards," Steve Buscemi for "Boardwalk Empire," Julianna Margulies for "The Good Wife,...

Chicago – The 2013 Emmy nominations were announced this morning, leading to the natural hand-wringing and chest-beating over who missed the cut. Before we get to the most egregious snubs of the year, a few places where the Academy unexpectedly, happily got it right:
1. “Enlightened” — I wish it had made the cut in Comedy Series but Laura Dern and Molly Shannon being nominated at all is not something I expected. My most glorious surprise of the morning.
2. One Down — I’m not sure Eric Stonestreet was the most deserving to be the first excluded from the supporting comedy categories but at least “Modern Family” takes up less than 50% of these categories and so it’s progress.
3. Fave Nominees — Jason Bateman, Louis C.K., Laura Dern, Lena Dunham, Amy Poehler, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Adam Driver, Bill Hader, Tony Hale, Bobby Cannavale (twice), Melissa Leo, Molly Shannon, Jeff Daniels, Bryan Cranston, Vera Farmiga, Elisabeth Moss, Aaron Paul,...

2013 is only halfway done, but there’s a fair chance that, in a television context, it might well be looked back upon as the year any and all accepted rules of “quality television” became utterly meaningless and the promise of great things arrived in all shapes and sizes, from all directions. Consider Netflix’s House of Cards and the resurrected Arrested Development: existing properties, incredible casts, and a novel delivery method to boot. Consider HBO’s increasingly epic and brutal Game of Thrones and the way it’s managed to capture the zeitgeist despite firmly belonging to a long-derided genre. Consider the continued reign of FX’s animated spy comedy Archer, complete with the best rapid-fire humor on TV. Consider Mad Men, still relevant as it heads into its final season. Consider the wildly popular The Walking Dead and the long-form horror that is sure to follow in its wake.

Dark Knight actor to play life peer drawn into the world of espionage in political thriller The Honourable Woman
The Dark Knight star Maggie Gyllenhaal is to take the lead role in a BBC2 thriller set against the backdrop of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Gyllenhaal, whose film credits also include Crazy Heart and Secretary, will play a British life peer in The Honourable Woman who is drawn into the world of international relations and espionage following the murder of a Palestinian businessman.
She joins a growing roster of American acting talent signing up for the channel's dramas. BBC2 viewers have just seen X Files star Gillian Anderson in serial killer drama The Fall and Elisabeth Moss – Mad Men's Peggy Olson – plays a police detective in Jane Campion's New Zealand-set thriller Top of the Lake, which will air on the channel in the summer.

Over the past ten years British comedian Steve Coogan hasn’t been having a bad time in Hollywood. Since starring alongside Jackie Chan in 2004′s Around The World In 80 Days, he has appeared in such films as Night At The Museum, Tropic Thunder, and this summer lends his voice to Despicable Me 2. Not one to forget his humble origins however, he has also appeared in British comedies Hot Fuzz and In The Loop, and has now returned to the one character where it all started, Alan Partridge.
First appearing as sports reporter in Radio 4′s On The Hour, Partridge later made the leap to television in The Day Today and was eventually given his own chat show, Knowing Me Knowing You With Alan Partridge. Perhaps his biggest success however, was the sitcom I’m Alan Partridge, which followed the failing star’s attempts to make it back to the small screen,...

BBC Two‘s five-part period drama Parade’s End leads the nominees for BAFTA‘s television craft awards with five. The adaptation of Ford Madox Ford’s novels started airing on HBO on February 26, and stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Rebecca Hall, Anne-Marie Duff, Rupert Everett and Miranda Richardson. It took mentions for production design and Tom Stoppard’s writing, among others. Also figuring heavily among the nominees are BBC Two and HBO’s Hitchcock drama The Girl, BBC One and BBC America‘s Ripper Street and BBC Two and BBC America’s cancelled The Hour. Other shows known to U.S. audiences, Doctor Who, Call The Midwife, Downton Abbey, Top Gear and The Thick Of It also scored nods. Olympics programming, inlcuding Danny Boyle’s opening ceremony and Stephen Daldry’s closing ceremony are nommed as is the fictional comedy series about the Games, Twenty Twelve. Awards will be handed out on April 28 in London.

• Notable film actor Peter Sarsgaard is making his way to TV. He’s joining the third season of AMC’s The Killing as “a lifelong convict born into poverty and crime who has been in and out of the system for violent crimes since he was 10. Never wanting to appear weak, every interaction for Tom is a challenge and one he must dominate.”
• ABC is moving its struggling comedy Happy Endings to Friday nights beginning March 29, where two episodes will air back-to-back until the season ends. This is not a promising sign, but at least it’s not canceled … ?
• Finally, NBC is giving its new drama Hannibal a premiere date. The series, which is being helmed by Bryan Fuller (ABC’s Pushing Daisies), will bow Thursday, April 4 at 10 p.

It was a big night for Ben Affleck at the Golden Globes last night as he took home awards for Best Drama and Best Director for Argo, which seemed to shock a lot of people (including himself). Les Miserables cleaned up in most of the Comedy/Musical categories as expected, while the acting awards were spread around quite evenly. As for TV, Homeland was the big winner for the Drama category, while HBO's Girls finally dethroned Modern Family on the Comedy side. Argo's win adds an interesting twist to the Oscar race as it didn't seem to be a genuine contender up until now (the Academy didn't even nominate Affleck for Best Director). However, Steven Spielberg's Lincoln came away empty-handed with the exception of Daniel Day-Lewis' win for Best Actor, while both Zero Dark Thirty and Silver Linings Playbook also came away with just one acting award each.

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler were great as the hosts of the 2013 Golden Globe Awards! They had some pretty funny moments, unfortunately Tommy Lee Jones didn't seem amused at anything going on at the Awards that night. That guy looked like he was going to kill someone! Especially during one of my favorite moments in the show that included Will Ferrell and Kristen Wigg presenting the award for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical.
There weren't really that many surprises in the acting categories. As expected, Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway both picked up awards for Les Miserables, and then Daniel Day-Lewis, Jennifer Lawrence, and Jessica Chastain all took home awards as well. I thought these were all in the bag. As for Christoph Waltz winning Best Supporting actor, it was either going to be him or Leonardo DiCaprio. I was rooting for DiCaprio, but I'm fine with Waltz winning.

Ben Affleck at the 2013 Golden Globe AwardsPhoto: NBC Ben Affleck may not be able to win Best Director at the Oscars as he has now done at both the Critics' Choice Awards and Golden Globe Awards, but you better believe with Argo also winning Best Picture at both awards shows we now have something to talk about when it comes to the front-runners for Best Picture at the Oscars. Granted, both the Golden Globes and Critics' Choice Awards are chosen by critics, but there is some measure of trickle effect when it comes to these things and two big precursor awards while the Academy is still voting and members are attending these shows does not go unnoticed. Argo took home Best Picture (Drama) and Les Miserables ended up taking home three Globes including Best Picture (Comedy/Musical), Best Actor (Comedy/Musical) for Hugh Jackman and Best Supporting Actress to Anne Hathaway.

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler rocked it hosting the 70th Annual Golden Globe Awards on NBC. Ben Affleck's "Argo" took home the Best Picture Drama while Tom Hooper's "Les Miserables" won Best Picture, Comedy/Musical. Much like the Critics' Choice Movie Awards before it, Affleck's picture led the winners of the Hollywood Foreign Press' Golden Globe Movie Awards!

When I was putting together my best jazz albums of 2012 article, Ivo Perelman's productive year had him dominating the list, so I made him artist of the year and then compiled a separate top ten of new recordings and a top five of older recordings mostly given their first releases this year. There were still plenty of excellent jazz albums to choose from. Jazz isn't dead, it just has to live on a fixed income.
Artist of the Year: Ivo Perelman
Brazilian tenor saxophonist Ivo Perelman's album The Hour of the Star was #18 on my Best New Jazz of 2011 list. He was just warming up for an amazing 2012 in which Leo Records released six -- Six!!! -- Perelman CDs. All of them are excellent (and none of them, alas, are on iTunes yet).

Megan Fox, Ed Helms and Jessica Alba announced the nominations (yes, yes, I’m talking about the 70 Annual Golden Globes Awards), and I was like – hey, there’s a movie titled Salmon Fishing in the Yemen! Salmon Fishing… Salmon Fishing… Oh, yeah, I remember Blunt and McGregor and their legs in some lake or something like that. But, three nominations for a fisheries expert, wtf? I mean – man, that’s what I call a surprise!
So, it was mostly good. Argo, Django, Pi, Zero, Argo, Django, Pi, Zero… If you ask me, I’m happy to see that Silver Linings Playbook received four nominations, although I guess we’re all confused with that comedy/musical thing part (Cooper is dealing with some serious mental problems, for God’s sake!).
Les Miserables is also doing fine with four nominations, as well as Lincoln, Argo and Zero Dark Thirty who have all scored big.

Argo, Django Unchained, Life of Pi, Lincoln and Zero Dark Thirty lead the pack of films recently nominated for the 70th Annual Golden Globe Awards! I still have yet to see Zero Dark Thirty and Django Unchained, but I hear they're amazing films so I can't wait! It's really hard to argue with any of the nominations, these are all great films and TV series. Speaking of which, Breaking Bad, Boardwalk Empire, Downton Abbey, Homeland and The Newsroom got nominations. I think The Newsroom will take home the big awards this year.

It will still be another month before we find out the nominations for next year's Academy Awards, but today the Hollywood Foreign Press Association unveiled its picks for the 70th Annual Golden Globe Awards... and they fell pretty much in line with expectations. Steven Spielberg's Lincoln led the pack with seven nominations including Best Picture - Drama, while Argo and Django Unchained both earned five each. Zero Dark Thirty was also up for a handful of awards along with Silver Linings Playbook and Les Miserables. Salmon Fishing In The Yemen was one that came out of left field for a lot of people, somehow sneaking in for a nomination under Best Picture - Comedy/Musical. As for snubs, P.T. Anderson's The Master was shut out of Best Picture and Best Director, only picking up nods for acting, while a lot of people also seem pretty peeved that ParaNorman...
