For veteran Bollywood filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra, his latest film “12th Fail” is the gift that keeps on giving.
Based on the 2019 book of the same name by Anurag Pathak, the film tells the true story of Manoj Kumar Sharma who conquered extreme familial poverty to pass one of the world’s toughest examination processes and become an Indian Police Service officer.
Distributed by Zee Studios, the modestly budgeted “12th Fail” released theatrically in October 2023 in a Bollywood market where only big-budget action spectacles were working and many smaller films were taking the easier route to bowing directly on a streamer. The lead cast of Vikrant Massey (Disney+ Series “Criminal Justice”) and Medha Shankr, while extremely competent, were not marquee names.
The film struck a chord with audiences and has grossed $8.5 million to date, more than three times its budget. “Each film has its own God, and it’s always...

“Munna Bhai 3 Has 5 Half-Written Scripts, Sanjay Dutt Wants To Make One”: Dunki Director Rajkumar Hirani… (Photo Credit –Instagram/YouTube)
We recently talked about how Shah Rukh Khan’s Dunki is the Munna Bhai 3, aka Munna Bhai Chale Amerika, we never got & now director Rajkumar Hirani went on record to talk about the film. Amidst Shah Rukh Khan’s Dunki’s decent run at the box office, Hirani reminisced about Sanjay Dutt and his love for the Munna Bhai franchise.
He also gave a strong hint at the franchise’s threequel, giving Munna & Circuit fans another ray of hope. Just imagine we’re still talking about films that were released 20 years ago & that says a lot about the love they still possess.
It shows how fans are still waiting with bated breath, and if Raju unites with Sanju, it will prove to be a destined blockbuster no matter what the story is.

Dunki
Why, Hirani, why? What prompted him to make this godforsaken misfire? What has happened to the brilliant flair for farce and social comment he once displayed in Munnabhai Mbbs and its even superior sequel Lage Raho Munnabhai? Hirani’s last work Sanju , which was a cream-cracker version of a stubbornly adventurous life, was mired in mediocrity. But at least it wasn’t dull.
Dunki is dreadfully torpid. In terms of sense and sensibility , coherence and basic common sense, it is a better film than Shah Rukh Khan’s two other films Pathaan and Jawaan this year. But that’s no consolation for the absurd writing(Hirani, Abhijat Joshi and Kanika Dhillon) and endless giggle-moments that just don’t land.
Worst still, the “jokes” go on and on like a stand-up act which clearly has no punchline but goes on in the hope that rapid movement would compensate for abysmal humourlessness.

Rajkumar Hirani’s Shah Rukh Khan starrer ‘Dunki’ is a comedy-drama film based on ‘donkey flights’ (termed as ‘dunki’ in Punjabi), an illegal immigration activity used for unauthorized entry into countries like the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. This method has gained notoriety among migrants, particularly those from Indian states such as Punjab, Haryana and Gujarat. Apparently the title of the film only works as its curiosity factor, as the film has nothing much about the ‘Dunki’ business and touches just the surface!
‘Dunki’ marks Shah Rukh Khan’s maiden collaboration with Raj Kumar Hirani, who had (reportedly) earlier offered him roles in his films Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. (2003) and 3 Idiots (2009) which Srk had rejected. Dunki is Taapsee Pannu’s first onscreen collaboration with Shah Rukh Khan whose Red Chillies Entertainment had earlier produced Taapsee starrer ‘Badla’.

Actor Arshad Warsi, who recently narrated the streaming series ‘Choona’, is celebrating 20 years of his iconic film ‘Munnabhai Mbbs’. The actor shared a recent incident when he and Sanjay Dutt shot for a project and the whole unit was just in awe of them as they donned their iconic costumes of Munna and Circuit.
Arshad’s character of Circuit has become a cult over the years and sets the biggest example of friendship goals as his chemistry with Munna is the stuff of legends. One could even feel a void when Munna and Circuit have a misunderstanding in ‘Lage Raho Munna Bhai’, and the scene where Munna reluctantly says sorry to Circuit brings tears in everyone’s eyes.
Walking down the memory lane, Arshad said: “I cannot believe it has been 2 decades. Circuit is a very special character for me, it is very close to my heart.”

“Romancham,” which means goosebumps, has turned out to be a sleeper hit, and rightly so. The director and writer Jithu Madhavan has not just managed to tap into the horror-comedy genre but has also pushed the boundaries of this genre by mixing satire with divinity and belief in spirituality. What makes “Romancham” special is the writing and the fresh approach to the comedy genre. There is no dearth of films in this genre; many come and go, but only a few stay with the audience to become cult classics. “Romancham” is one of those films that will be remembered for years to come for its fresh approach. The fresh approach when it comes to writing and having primarily a new cast carry the characters written. The relatively new cast delivered stellar performances. Soubin Shahir and Arjun Ashokan were the only known leads in the film. “Romancham” ended with the announcement of a sequel,...

Sanjay Dutt Aims to Bring Heroism Back to Bollywood With Three Dimension Motion Pictures (Exclusive)
Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt is launching production company Three Dimension Motion Pictures with a view to bringing back the golden age of heroism to the industry.
Dutt cites the recent pan-Indian box office success of South Indian film “Pushpa” and the films of “Baahubali” filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli as examples of the vanished larger-than-life heroism in Bollywood.
“We’re trying to get back what we had, what the South Indian films are doing now,” Dutt tells Variety. “When we entered the film industry, we started off with the heroism, the heroic roles, the mass love and everything, and I just saw that stopping. And I am trying to revive that.”
Dutt, 62, the son of respected actors turned politicians Sunil and Nargis Dutt, debuted with “Rocky” (1981), in an era where leading men of mainstream Indian cinema were written as a complete heroic package. In the Bollywood of today that genre is reduced to a niche,...

Dutt’s chequered career should make a fine learning-curve biopic, but this three-hour hagiography simply blames everyone else for his troubles
The career of Bollywood megastar Sanjay Dutt has been the rockiest of rides. Born to Nargis, iconic figurehead of 1957’s Mother India, Dutt’s initial breakthrough was stymied by drink, drugs and womanising, and subsequent comebacks separated by stretches of prison time. His air of disrepute bolstered 2006’s terrific comedy Lage Raho Munna Bhai, where Dutt played a heavy nagged towards virtue by Gandhi’s ghost: the gags there had the ring of hard truth. That film’s director Rajkumar Hirani now brings us a decidedly soft and authorised-looking biopic featuring boyish pin-up Ranbir Kapoor as the roguish colossus, which to British eyes seems like recruiting, say, Men’s Hour lynchpin Tim Samuels to play Ray Winstone.

Sanjay Dutt and Salman Khan have always maintained that they are good friends and share a great bond with each other. They have often displayed their camaraderie on more than one occasion. At a recent event in the capital, Sanjay was asked to play a word association game. According to reports, during the rapid fire round, when the 'Lage Raho Munna Bhai' actor was asked to choose a word to describe Salman, he promptly said 'arrogant'. Vidhu Vinod Chopra has produced some of the best in Bollywood from 1989’s Parinda, to 2003’s Munna Bhai Mbbs and the follow up Lage Raho Munna Bhai in 2005, Parineeta in 2005, 3 Idiots in 2009 and last year’s big hit Pk. After making some brilliant films in Bollywood, the director decided to pursue a long held dream of making a film in Hollywood. What is even cooler is that he is just not producing the film, he also wrote and directed the thriller titled Broken Horses. The film stars a huge cast of Hollywood stars including Vincent D’Onofrio (The Judge, Full Metal Jacket, Men In Black), Anton Yelchin (Star Trek, Alpha Dog) and Chris Marquette (Alpha Dog, The Girl Next Door) along with Spanish actress, Maria Valverde (Exodus), Thomas Jane, and Sean Patrick Flannery.
Broken Horses is about the bonds of brotherhood, the laws of loyalty, and the futility of violence.

Boman Irani has been called many things in the past; from the film’s surprise element to Raju Hirani’s lucky mascot, but the actor insists the only relationship he shares with the eminent director is that of friendship. The fact that the two consider each other close, is known to all, but what’s remarkable is the two share such a wonderful rapport that whenever they come together its magic. Stretching limits and leaving the audience applauding seems to be a habit for this duo.
Hirani’s rendition of J. Asthana and Boman’s portrayal of it in Munna Bhai Mbbs was something that got Irani in the limelight. Lucky Singh and Lage Raho Munna Bhai, went a step ahead pushing Irani’s acting skills and Hirani’s Bo stature. The Sunset Club by Karan Tejpal & Tia Tejpal
Karan Tejpal
What is your project about? What language will the film be in?
The Sunset Club is adapted from one of Khushwant Singh’s last novels. It captures the election year of 2009 in India through the eyes of a 40 year old friendship between three octogenarians. An incredible commentary on independent India, the book beautifully captures the desires and despair of urban New Delhi. It is an intimate tale of daily meetings at the Lodhi Gardens, New Delhi; woven with arousing memories from the past of the three old men.
The film will be true to urban north India and hence in Hindi, English, Punjabi and Urdu.
At what stage of development is it?
The screenplay is raring to go from our side but we are looking forward to incorporating inputs from the Lab to take this project to fruition.
We are looking for Producers/Financing.

Munna Bhai Mbbs and sequel Lage Raho Munna Bhai had Bollywood audiences crying with side splitting laughter.
The heart warming comedy and the Mumbai hooligan antics came with a message. Whilst Munna Bhai Mbbs had the protagonist “Munna Bhai”, a lovable Mumbai hoodlum, become a faux- medical student who “cured” people through his humour and good heart, the second instalment had Munna Bhai don the disguise of a faux- history professor. Becoming an expert on Gandhi and Gandhism, Munna Bhai attempted to win the heart of his love through his supposed knowledge. However, through the lies and deceit, he finds himself haunted by a Gandhi who won’t let his guilty conscious alone.
Along with these social and personal lessons, came a whole of fun…
The “Jaddo ki Jhappi” (Magical hug)
The “Bole Tau!” (What I mean “homie” is…)
The “Aae Mamu!” (You fool!)
And these antics are to make a grand return.
