Halloween on Halloween. A Christmas Story or It's a Wonderful Life around Christmas time. And now it appears we get the parade of 9/11 movies come every September 11th. For awhile I had issues with this. Not because I felt it was too soon (my feeling is that art is never too soon regardless of the subject). No. It was that almost every film trotted out on TV for 9/11 over the last several years was hackneyed drivel. There have been a few powerful docs on the subject (especially "9/11"). Discovery Communications has pinned senior vp stripes on development executive Jeff Hasler and communications exec Elizabeth Hillman.
Hasler has been promoted to senior vp development for the Discovery Channel and the Science Channel, while Hillman has been upped to senior vp communications for both networks.
Hasler most recently was vp development at the Discovery Channel, where he created a slate of brand-definitional series and specials focused on the network's core programming roots. In his new post, he will be responsible for initiating original programming ideas for the two networks, managing primetime and daytime program development teams, supervising pilot production and developing series and special event programming concepts and formats.
In her new role, Hillman oversees all communications strategies and media outreach for the Discovery Channel and the Science Channel, including the development of media campaigns for the networks' programming, partnerships and online assets. Hillman, who was vp communications, has led communications plans for such shows as Deadliest Catch, The Flight That Fought Back and Shark Week.
"Jeff and Elizabeth are two of the best in the business," said president and general manager Jane Root, to whom Hasler and Hillman report.

A&E soared Monday on the wings of the original movie Flight 93, scoring the highest-rated program in the 22-year history of the network. Flight, a fact-based account of how passengers fought back against terrorists aboard United Flight 93, which was hijacked Sept. 11, 2001, drew 5.9 million total viewers from 9-11 p.m. Flight also drew 2.7 million in the 18-49 demographic. A similar movie last year, Flight 93: The Flight That Fought Back, worked wonders for Discovery Channel, delivering its third-highest rating ever. A&E's Flight, which was produced by David Gerber Co. in association with Fox Television Studios, topped previous records for the channel set by the 2004 biopic Ike: Countdown to D-Day.
