When Mount Vesuvius rained holy hell upon Pompeii on August 24 in the year 79 Ce—the day after Vulcania, the festival of the Roman god of fire and volcanoes, no less—it created one of the great disasters of the Roman Empire, wiping out a city founded seven hundred years earlier.
Fast-forward 1,893 years. Excavations of the old city had begun in the 16th century and eventually turned the region into a tourist hotspot, which is what attracted film director Adrian Maben in 1971. He was looking for his lost passport when he wandered back to the deserted amphitheatre and was fascinated by its ancient majesty and fantastic acoustics. He’d been looking for an unconventional place to stage some kind of Pink Floyd event.
Wouldn’t this be a brilliant spot to shoot a concert film?...

The following is a recap of the first two episodes of FX’s Legion. The first outing introduced us to David Haller (Dan Stevens), a “mutant” living in a mental hospital called Clockworks. Through non-linear storytelling and an exploration of David’s world, we learned that our protagonist has lived his life believing that his telekinetic and telepathic superpowers are a mental illness.
During the pilot, we also get acquainted with some of the major events in his recent life. These include switching bodies with his girlfriend, Syd Barrett (Rachel Keller), and escaping his mental hospital, Clockworks, during which his friend Lenny (Aubrey Plaza) dies in a wall that he may have created; returning home to his sister and talking with Lenny, his recently-deceased friend; getting captured and interrogated by a sinister governmental organization, before escaping with the help of Syd and fellow mutants; and joining up with a team of other superhumans,...

Happy New Year! It's been a tumultuous year for me and for many of us of a certain age. I lost a brother. The world lost a slew of pop culture -- Carrie Fisher, Alan Richman, Craig Sager, John Glenn -- and music icons -- Bowie, Prince, Leonard Cohen, George Michael, et al. One comfort for me was music and my rediscovery of vinyl. The warm, comforting sound of analog became my daily meditative fix. Quite literarily. Seeking out vinyl "nuggets" became a quest to help me deal with my own pain and depression. Chasing down albums that I owned thirty years, abadonded at the advent of those shiny new things called compact discs. Restorative analog power reigned o'er me. One of my chief caveats: I would not purchase anything on vinyl that I already owned on compact disc. Well, that rule didn't last long as I found comfort in...

David Gilmour treated Pink Floyd fans who'd gathered for an outdoor concert hosted by Jimmy Kimmel Live Monday to a gorgeous rendition of "Wish You Were Here."
The former Floyd singer and guitarist breezed through the indelible acoustic ballad, remaining faithful to the original down to the "do-do-do" melodies he sang over his guitar playing. Gilmour's "Wish You Were Here" did feature one significant addition, however, as a pedal steel player added a wonderful, lonesome country tinge to the beloved 1975 song.

Music and Sex: Scenes from a life - A novel in progress (first chapter here).
As 1980 got going, Walter was distracted from Janie’s absence by progress on the band front. Garrick had found an electric guitarist, Tom O’Reilly. Though still lacking bass and drums, they decided to try putting together some new songs and practicing some covers -- because as TomO (as he styled himself) pointed out pragmatically, a good set of rockin’ covers would get them gigs at the frats that lined the south side of 114th St. Over a round of beers at the Marlin, a brightly lit bar that had less visual flair than a high school cafeteria, but the cheapest beer near campus, they decided to take turns suggesting covers.
Walter led off: "For Your Love." He liked it because of its harpsichord riff.
"Fuck that!" blurted TomO. "I was told we'd be covering Nuggets-type songs.

One of the first lines spoken in Wolf is in the form of a question: “How do you feel about myths?” The question floats around and isn’t brought up again until about the mid way point of this first issue. The subject of myths are discussed through a conversation, placing them as something that should, and perhaps already has to a certain extent, face the need to evolve over time. Stories are reworked, remade, and touched up in favour of the changes made over time, as certain aspects of these myths may appear outdated, stuck in a particular loop of time; a Mobius strip one could say. Wolf approaches this ideology of challenging traditional myths by respecting their origins but plays with the potential to invent and distort...

In a recent interview, ex-Smiths and Modest Mouse guitarist Johnny Marr confessed that he really didn’t ‘get’ the hairy and theatrical rock gods Queen.
This is a more common reason for not liking an act than you would think – it’s possible to be able to appreciate the musical merits of an artist, and accept that there a smorgasbord of reasons that they are so massively popular, and still have them leave you as cold as a snow leopard that’s forgotten to pay its heating bill.
In that spirit, here are 10 acts that are massively popular in their own right, but leave me feeling no emotion other than utter indifference towards them.
10. Pink Floyd

Any fan of classic rock knows who Pink Floyd is. The mammoth rock band shattered all expectations and standards set for rock bands, with insanely elaborate live shows, and with their bizarre music style they took what the Beatles had started and advanced it to the next level. They also achieved an unprecedented level of commercial success for a progressive rock band.
Undoubtedly though, their peak of success – both commercially and artistically – was from 1972 to 1979, when they released a string of five highly successful albums. Meddle, The Dark Side of the Moon; Wish You Were Here; Animals; and lastly The Wall, which to date has gone 23x Platinum.
I personally have shared my love for Pink Floyd on occasion before, and yet I feel as though there’s more to say. See, out of those five albums mentioned above, many rave about all of them but Animals. So I decided...

He wasn't an official member of Pink Floyd but he might as well have been. Storm Thorgerson, the English graphic designer best known for creating a slew of iconic album covers for the classic rockers, including those for The Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here, died Thursday. The sad news was announced on Pink Floyd's official website. "His ending was peaceful and he was surrounded by family and friends. He had been ill for some time with cancer though he had made a remarkable recovery from his stroke in 2003. He was in his 70th year," said his family in a release. In a separate statement, the group hailed Thorgerson as a "graphic genius, friend and...

London -- English graphic designer Storm Thorgerson, whose eye-popping album art for Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin encapsulated the spirit of 1970s psychedelia, died Thursday. He was 69.
In a statement, Thorgerson's family said that his death "was peaceful and he was surrounded by family and friends." The statement gave few further details but said that the artist, who suffered a stroke in 2003, had been ill for some time.
Even those who not familiar with Thorgerson's name will have seen his work gracing vinyl collections and CD racks. He was best known for his surreal Pink Floyd covers, which guitarist David Gilmour said had long been "an inseparable part of our work."
Some of Thorgerson's covers – the disturbing image of burning man in a business suit featured on Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" or the stark prism on the band's "Dark Side of the Moon" – have become icons in their own right.

“Humor is healing. Music is inspiring.” That’s how Staff Sgt. Robert Henline summed up last night’s Stand Up for Heroes benefit — an annual event for injured service members, veterans, and their families produced by the New York Comedy Festival and the Bob Woodruff Foundation.
In March 2007, Henline’s truck hit a roadside bomb while he was serving his third tour in Iraq. He suffered burns over 38 percent of his body and lost his left ear in the explosion — but Henline held on to his sense of humor. Before the show, the vet worked the red carpet outside of...

New York — Roger Waters honored wounded veterans in New York by performing with them at the annual Stand Up for Heroes benefit, Thursday night.
The founding member of Pink Floyd took to the stage of the Beacon Theater with 14 wounded soldiers he met recently at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. He rehearsed with them at the hospital, and for the past few days in New York.
The event benefited the Bob Woodruff Foundation, which helps returning veterans and their families, and featured Waters, Bruce Springsteen, Ricky Gervais, Robin Williams, and others.
Before the show, Waters chatted with veterans and called the experience "fantastic." He says he's "looking forward to pulling for the rest of these guys with their comrades" during the healing process.
He says that he shares "enormous empathy with the men."

Pink Floyd star Nick Mason has defended his performance with Ed Sheeran at the Olympics closing ceremony. The drummer took to the stage with Sheeran, Mike Rutherford from Genesis and Richard Jones of The Feeling to play 'Wish You Were Here' on Sunday (August 12). However, Sheeran came under fire from Pink Floyd fans for his rendition of the track, particularly after his younger fans mistook the song for Sheeran's new single. Who’d have thought just a few weeks ago that the Olympic Games in London would go so smoothly? The troubles with security arrangements with G4S, worries about overloading the public transport and of course keeping away the rioters were thought to be too big a challenge for London but these barely became an issue. The games themselves went off quite smoothly and on Sunday night were drawn to a grand closure with a spectacular after party that went on through the night.
The closing ceremony was a spectacle, something to look at with pride and the directors of the ceremony had a lot riding on them as they needed to give the historic London 2012 games a fitting goodbye and they did. To a large extent the ceremony was brilliant, for most of the time, it did not bore us and did not drag on, however, at the end...

When the band members first sang "My Generation," they were in their 20s. Now they are pushing 70. The 2012 London Olympics Closing Ceremony was highlighted by performances from some of the biggest names in rock and roll -- including Queen.
Famed British acts from the last 50 years like George Michael, Annie Lennox, Liam Gallagher of Oasis, Spice Girls and Muse all performed. However, one of the biggest highlights was the appearance of Queen: A video of the late Freddie Mercury lit up the crowd, before guitarist Brian May took the stage for an extended jam session. That led into the Queen classic "We Will Rock You," which was sung by British songstress Jessie J.
New acts like One Direction and Ed Sheeran also played the Closing Ceremony. Sheeran covered "Wish You Were Here" with Nick Mason from Pink Floyd.
The Spice Girls appeared as well, singing "Wannabe" and "Spice Up Your Life."
Michael played his popular song "Freedom" and the newer track "White Light" to the delight of the crowd.

The music director of Sunday’s Olympics closing ceremony tells the London Telegraph that the event “should be the greatest after-party in the world” — and judging from the details that have leaked so far, we tend to agree. Between Adele crooning “Someone Like You,” members of Pink Floyd performing “Wish You Were Here,” and a “galaxy” of other British stars rumored to include the Rolling Stones, Elton John, George Michael, Queen, Ray Davies of the Kinks, the Who, Muse, and, of course, the Spice Girls, all that’s missing is a cameo from some Tupacian Beatles holograms.

English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran is quickly becoming a hot music commodity and things are only getting better for the rising star. Talking to an Australian radio station, Sheeran claimed he’ll be performing Pink Floyd’s “Wish You Were Here” with the band’s surviving members at the closing of the 2012 Olympic ceremonies in London.
Sheeran had previously been rumored to be joining The Who at the event.

Other members of the band, who were introduced by Richard Curtis, included guitarist Robbie McIntosh, percussionist Jodi Linscott, synth player Paul 'Wix' Wickens, singer Margo Buchanan, bassist Dave Bronze and Paul Beavis on drums. McIntosh opened the set before being joined by the rest of the band in stages. Gilmour joined the band and sung Pink Floyd hit 'Wish You Were Here'. He also played lead guitar (more)...

Happy Birthday to Kiki Dee, who is 65, Stephen Schwartz is 64, Connie Britton is 45, Eddie Deezen is 54, and David Gilmour is 66. Time to name your top five Pink Floyd songs. Here are my picks: 5. "Another Brick In The Wall'," 4. "Learning To Fly," 3. "Wish You Were Here," 2. "Comfortably Numb," 1. "Welcome To The Machine".
The 2012 London Olympics has released a "Diversity and Inclusion Quiz" for Olympic volunteers to help them deal with certain situations that may arise. In the gay section is this scenario: A spectator made "very uncomfortable" by two men sitting next to him holding hands. The choices are "tell him to stop being a homophobic idiot" or "politely ask the couple to stop holding hands" or "explain that there is a huge diversity of people at the London 2012 Games, which includes gay, lesbian and bisexual individuals and couples." Hmm, I can't decide.

Roger Waters is still touring solo with The Wall, building it brick by brick and then knocking it down nightly, and if you haven't had an opportunity to experience this absolute requirement of rock history, the next best thing available is to get your wormy little hands on the Pink Floyd: The Wall Immersion Box Set, available February 28.
Bands like Radiohead, Muse and even Gorillaz and Nine Inch Nails owe a tremendous debt to Pink Floyd (whose lineup was comprised of Waters, David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Rick Wright), who arguably blazed the widest swath out there in the progressive/psychedelic rock genre and one-upped The Who's Tommy with their own take on the Rock Opera.

I've already gone over the best of 2011, and periodically rounded up rock and pop releases as the year went along, yet there were many more albums that came out last year that I also meant to review but didn't get around to then, for one reason or another. Here are a few of them.
Pink Floyd: Wish You Were Here Experience edition (Capitol)
Last time I did a review roundup, I dissed the Dark Side of the Moon two-cd remaster's second disc. I'm happy to report that this one's a lot more interesting.
Three extended tracks from a 1974 Wembley concert open it. The concert version of "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" predates the studio version and is significantly different from it in both arrangement and improvisation. It's Parts 1-6, so that's a good 20 minutes right off the bat. "Raving and Drooling" and "You've Got to Be Crazy" are very...

A Tumblr called Clip Art Covers has been putting out hilarious and creative interpretations of albums created with, you guessed it, Clip Art. The images have been spreading across the internet pretty quickly and feature iconic covers such as the Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds and Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here, except they’re remade with the same images that graced about every PowerPoint presentation you saw in the ‘90s. You can take a look at some of our favorites below, and check out the full site here. The White Album Pet Sounds Straight Outta Compton Andy Warhol ...

This coming January, Sundance is getting off to a promising start. Other than the fact that we’ll be there, it’s because the World Cinema Dramatic Competition category opens with Wish You Were Here, a mystery starring Joel Edgerton, Teresa Palmer, Anthony Starr, and Felicity Price. The lattermost of those names also co-wrote the film with director Kieran Darcy-Smith, and if a new preview is any indication, they’ve come up with something good.
This first trailer — which premiered courtesy of Blue Tongue Films (via Twitch) — sells us a thriller that should remind some of I Know What You Did Last Summer, minus the badness. Throw in beautiful locations, tense music, a creepy kid, a shot of...

Anna Faris got up close and personal on all the late night talk shows this week -- admitting, among other things, that she used to be a creepy stalker.
Last night she was on the Late Night with Jimmy Fallon show to talk about her latest movie, 'What's Your Number?' when the conversation turned to her past relationships.
In college, Faris was dating the love of her life (he had even given her a promise ring!) when she suddenly found herself dumped and listening to Pink Floyd's 'Wish You Were Here' on repeat. "I would cry," laughs the actress. "And then I would watch myself in the mirror cry. And I would feel really sorry for myself."
But being a woman of action, Faris eventually decided to take things into her own hands and change his mind. Here's what she did to try to win him...

There was a brief period where the future of Cabin in the Woods — the horror film co-written by Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard, with the latter directing — was shaky at best. Early buzz on it has been great, but MGM had to go and be fiscally irresponsible, leaving a movie that was already shot in an unreleased state, and basically without a studio. Lionsgate was graceful and picked it up, with the movie now set to come out later this year.
BloodyDisgusting (via BleedingCool) has provided our first look at the movie, which can be seen above. While it’s not exactly the most revealing shot, it shows off a pre-Thor Chris Hemsworth, as well as castmates like Jesse Williams, Fran Kranz, Kristen Connolly, and Anna Hutchison. Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford are sadly missing, but we’ll see them eventually.

Pink Floyd have topped a poll looking for the greatest album cover of all time. The Wish You Were Here rockers managed to beat off competition from The Beatles and Nirvana to top the list with the artwork of their 1973 album Dark Side Of The Moon. The cover - consisting of a plain black background with a 2D drawing of a beam of white light being split by a prism - has been produced over 30 million times, with the album topping the charts in the Us and reaching number two in the UK. "The Floyd cover is a reminder of a time when sleeve art meant more than a jpeg a couple of hundred pixels wide in your iTunes library," explained Will Groves, editor of Music Radar, who conducted the poll. The band had another top ten entry, with their artwork for 1977's (more)...

We recently posted an article (along with some images) about the upcoming Quentin vs. Coen – art show by Spoke Art. The show is you guessed it, a tribute to the films of Tarantino and the Brothers”, a followup to last year’s highly successful Bad Dads – a tribute to Wes Anderson.
Ken Harman (founder of Spoke Art) was kind to send us a ton of new images he compiled from the show that I think our readers will enjoy. I am only posting the Tarantino inspired images today, but come back on the weekend to see the Coen bros. art work.

Pink Floyd: Wish You Were Here (Columbia)
Pink Floyd started out in the mid-'60s as The Tea Set, mostly playing R&B. The precursor of its eventually famous name originated when the band found itself on a bill with another band also named The Tea Set and leader Syd Barrett had to spontaneously come up with and alternative: The Pink Floyd Sound, inspired by the names of two old-time Piedmont style blues men, Pink Anderson and Floyd Council.

Financier Arpad Busson helped extend David Gilmour and Roger Waters' brief Pink Floyd reunion at the weekend, July 10 by offering to donate $50,000 if the former bandmates played his favorite song. The once feuding stars stunned guests at a benefit for young Palestinian refugees in Oxfordshire, England with an unannounced reunion and Busson got his wallet out for the concert.
After playing "To Know Him Is to Love Him", "Comfortably Numb" and "Wish You Were Here", the duo agreed to play one more tune after the tycoon offered to hand over $50,000 if they performed "Another Brick in the Wall". Event organiser Bella Freud insists the reunion wasn't a huge surprise to her - she almost managed to persuade Gilmour and Waters to perform at the same Hoping charity event in 2009.
She tells Rolling Stone magazine, "There was the possibility of something happening. David said he would do something and I asked Roger and he said,...

London, July 13 – Putting their differences aside, Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour and Roger Waters performed on stage for charity.
The musicians, who separated in the early 1980s, performed at a fundraising event hosted by Jemima Khan to help Palestinian children, reports the Mirror.
The pair performed a trio of Floyd tracks – ‘Wish You Were Here’, ‘Comfortably Numb’ and chart-topping single ‘Another Brick In The Wall’ – as well as the Phil Spector song ‘To Know Him Is To Love Him’.
The performance by the bass player and guitarist was for the Hoping Foundation (Hope and Optimism for Palestinians in the Next Generation), organised by Bella Freud. They.

Pink Floyd rocker Richard Wright has died at the age of 65, after a short battle with cancer.
The keyboardist was a founder member of the hugely successful band, along with former school friends Roger Waters and Nick Mason.
He helped write a number of the group's hit albums including Meddle, Dark Side of the Moon, and Wish You Were Here before quitting in 1981 following a bust-up with Waters.
After an unsuccessful attempt at a solo career, Wright rejoined Pink Floyd six years later, after Waters had left, and he continued to perform and record with Mason and new frontman David Gilmour.
Wright reunited with Waters onstage in 2005 when the group put aside its differences to perform at the Live 8 charity concert in London - but dismissed suggestions the band may reform for a money-spinning tour.
Confirming his death on Monday, Wright's spokesperson tells Gigwise.com, "The family of Richard Wright, founder member of Pink Floyd, announce with great sadness, that Richard died today after a short struggle with cancer.
"The family have asked that their privacy is respected at this difficult time."
It is not known what form of cancer Wright suffered.
He is survived by his third wife Millie, their son Ben, and his two children from his marriage to first wife Juliette Gale.
