Tough and natural
youngspirit1 December 2005
Australian television, particularly drama, currently appears to be in drought. How lovely then it was to discover "The Surgeon", with its characters moving within a day-to-day structure within Sydney General. Some plot threads extend across episodes, but the central story of each episode was a self-contained medical case.

I found Eve's journey tough and challenging. I liked the naturalness that this series conveyed, the everyday nature of life inside the medical profession. Most of all, I liked that these characters are 'real people', with doubts, personal problems, who make mistakes.

I would love to see another season of this great series, but should that not happen, I'm just glad I got to see this season - and hope to see more from the team behind it.

Fantastic drama series strives for excellence and achieves it.

The Surgeon is probably one of the most important drama series to hit Australian screens in years. I find it so refreshing and original. The acting is so realistic, the operations are emotionally draining, sometimes electric. Justine Clarke gives the performance of her career and surrounds herself with an amazing cast. And finally we also get to see some fantastic cinematography on our small screens, with color and lighting giving it a cinematic quality and camera work that keeps the show alive. Coming from a family of surgeons I can guarantee that this show has come closer to any medical show to date to give an audience a real look at what goes on behind those operating doors. Great work I look forward to watching the rest of the season.

Not the Canadian series.

This is not the Canadian series, as the intro wrongly states, but an Australian series.

Warning: Spoilers
Quite possibly the most substanceless medical show ever made. At the least it's the most uninteresting show I've ever seen in the genre. It doesn't seem to have any specific direction or vision. No unique character personalities, and no detailed focus on medical procedure. Even the acting is sub-par, which is something I almost never notice. The only semi-distinctive trait this show has is the constant bickering and tension between medical personnel, perhaps an attempt at showing the bleaker side of hospital life, but it's not focused enough to be able to judge what the writers were going for. The general atmosphere of the show is sparse and dark, but it could just as well be attributable to the low production values as to any artistic decision. Ultimately what you've got here is a minimalist medical drama, and is that something anyone wants to see? I know I don't.
