Tom Selleck recently told USA Today that he relied on Matthew Perry for line readings during the filming of one “Friends” episode during the NBC sitcom’s second season. The “Magnum P.I.” favorite was a recurring guest star on “Friends” as Richard Burke, an ophthalmologist who becomes Monica’s older love interest despite being friends with her parents. In one episode, Richard tries to act younger by using Chander (Perry) and Joey (Matt LeBlanc) as examples.
“We had this role reversal thing going, where [Richard] tried to be like them, and them like me,” Selleck said, remembering that he had difficulty nailing the way Perry would make jokes fly with his trademark sarcastic line readings.
One bit of dialogue that was tripping Selleck up was a line about Richard’s football skills delivered with the sarcasm of Chandler. The line read as followed: “Could that shot be any prettier?”

Monday’s Emmys ceremony paid tribute to late Friends star Matthew Perry — but in a night filled with nostalgic reunions, his Friends castmates were nowhere to be found.
The producers did reach out to Perry’s Friends co-stars to participate, but “it’s still very fresh for them,” executive producer Jeannae Rouzan-Clay tells The Hollywood Reporter. “We had talked about it early on,” executive producer Jesse Collins adds, “but I can imagine, from their side, they’re mourning someone who was still very close to them. I can’t speak for them, but we all have to respect that they were their own family.

Nick Offerman has been a bit of an Emmys bridesmaid so far, as the versatile actor has been nominated three times in his career but failed to turn any of them into cold, hard wins he can put on his shelf. This year, he earned his fourth nomination — and, surprisingly, his first one as an actor. He was nominated for Best Drama Guest Actor for HBO’s hugely successful video-game adaptation “The Last of Us.”
In the show, Offerman appears as Bill in episode three — “Long, Long Time.” Perhaps the most emotional episode of the entire series, Offerman is front and center of the drama and truly gets a chance to show off his acting chops. Bill lives a solitary life on his compound when the epidemic breaks out. But his uneasy quiet is disturbed when Murray Bartlett‘s Frank stumbles upon the land. Bill is reluctant to help the...

Sarah Paulson revealed on “The View” that Matthew Perry helped land her a supporting role on Aaron Sorkin’s short-lived TV series “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip.” Perry headlined the NBC show opposite Bradley Whitford and Amanda Peet, all of whom were cast already when Paulson was auditioning for the role of fictional actor Harriet Hayes. The Emmy winner said Perry took her under his wing and ensured she had an advantage in her final audition by personally running lines with her.
“I was at a particular place in my career where I needed that job very desperately,” Paulson said. “He, because of his friendship with Amanda Peet, who was my best friend at the time and was also on the show – they had done a movie together called ‘The Whole Nine Yards’ – so he asked me to meet him in the parking lot for my final audition and...

I watched Friends when it originally aired. I was in college in the 1990s, when the sitcom launched and became a cultural phenomenon. I carved Thursday nights out of my calendar, reserving the 8 p.m. hour for my Friends obsession, refusing to go out until after my weekly visit with Ross, Rachel, Monica, Chandler, Joey and Phoebe. I was experiencing many of the same things my Friends were: first love, first job and learning who I was — a little Ocd (Monica), deflecting (Chandler) and a dash responsible dork (Ross).
Needless to say, Matthew Perry’s passing has been as emotional a blow for me, as it has for so many others. I remember when Kurt Cobain died and felt the impact of Magic Johnson’s revelation that he was HIV positive. Neither came close to mirroring how I feel now after Perry’s tragic death Saturday at age 54.

Matthew Perry will most often be remembered for his wit and charm, but there was so much more to him.
The pilot script of “Friends” had a lot of heat at the agencies and young actors both familiar and fresh were vying for the roles.
There was interest and momentum for Craig Bierko to play the role of Chandler Bing, and until Craig said he wasn’t interested, Matthew stayed in the background because he didn’t want to compete with his friend. Who says show business has to be cut throat?
Once we saw and heard Matthew’s audition we knew that our prayers had been answered. The role we had struggled mightily with throughout the casting process was now cast. Or was it? We couldn’t have Matthew in first position because he’d made a sci-fi pilot for Fox called “Lax 2194” about baggage handlers in the future.

In addition to his signature role as Chandler Bing, on NBC Perry also guest starred on Aaron Sorkin’s White House drama The West Wing and headlined Sorkin’s drama Studio 60 On the Sunset Strip, set behind the scenes of an SNL-like sketch comedy show, and comedy Go On.

As one of NBC’s biggest names during Friends‘ 10-year reign on the network, Perry hosted SNL on Oct. 4, 1997. Below is one of his bumper shots from the show.

The actor was found unresponsive Saturday at around 4 p.m. in the hot tub at his Los Angeles home. First responding paramedics were unable to revive him. This post contains spoilers for the Season Two finale of “And Just Like That …,” which is now streaming on Max.
Can we talk, for a moment, about the guest list for the main event of “The Last Supper, Part Two: Entrée,” aka the finale of And Just Like That… Season Two?
As Carrie Bradshaw gathered together her nearest and dearest to say farewell to her beloved Upper East Side apartment, some of the attendees made perfect sense. Charlotte and Miranda were, of course, in attendance, Charlotte bringing along husband Harry.

The world lost an incomparable comedic genius this week as Paul Reubens passed away at the age of 70 after a private battle with cancer. And while we of course first think of his joyfully childlike alter ego Pee-wee Herman, we also fondly remember his pitch-perfect guest spot that helped launch an all-time great sitcom: NBC’s 30 Rock.
Reubens guest-starred in Episode 12 of 30 Rock‘s freshman season, titled “Black Tie,” as Prince Gerhardt, a hopelessly inbred royal from an unnamed country. (You can watch highlights from Reubens’ appearance above.) Riddled with disfigurements due to centuries of inbreeding, Gerhardt was...

Although John Goodman is best remembered for his role as working-class father Dan Conner on TV’s “Roseanne” and “The Conners,” he’s also enjoyed a very successful big screen career as well, working with such directors as the Coen brothers, Steven Spielberg and Robert Zemeckis. Let’s look back at 20 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Surprisingly (and criminally), not one of these roles brought Goodman an Oscar nomination. He did compete at the Golden Globes as Best Supporting Actor for “Barton Fink” (1991), but the academy went for his co-star Michael Lerner instead. Goodman also contended at the Globes four times as Best TV Comedy Actor for “Roseanne”, winning in 1993.
At the Emmys, Goodman earned seven consecutive Best Comedy Actor bids for “Roseanne” (1989-1995) and won for his guest performance on “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip” (2007). He’s also contended for his TV-movie work: once as...

Although her acting on her eponymous 11-season variety show was consistently overlooked by the TV academy, Carol Burnett has still racked up two dozen Emmy nominations and six wins over the course of six decades. Having just reached the age of 90, she is now on the verge of earning her first Best Drama Supporting Actress notice for AMC’s “Better Call Saul,” which would also be her first for a supporting or lead role on a non-sketch series. If she succeeds on this possible bid, she will set a new precedent as the first nonagenarian to ever win an acting Emmy.
Burnett joined the cast of “Better Call Saul” for the second part of its sixth and final season, which aired from July to August 2022. Her character, Marion, is the elderly mother of a cab driver who becomes an accomplice of seasoned criminal Jimmy “Saul Goodman” McGill (Bob Odenkirk). Although...

Exclusive: Actors Mark McKinney and Daniel Ings have signed on to star in the comedy road movie A Rush of Blood.
We understand British filmmaker Tristan Shepherd will direct the pic from a screenplay he also wrote. Billed as a “comedy, thriller, road trip movie,” the plot follows a British-Canadian couple, who get their last shot at fulfilling their professional ambitions — and any hope of reinvigorating their marriage — when their independent film is selected for Sundance. However, when they accept a ride to Park City with Reegan, a young, self-styled film reporter, who becomes increasingly maniacal as the journey unfolds, their dream slowly turns into a nightmare – more frightening than any film plot they could have ever devised. McKinney will play a character named Larry, while Ings will suit up as a character named Brian.

It was a night of firsts, lasts and an upset win as TV’s finest gathered together to celebrate the 45th Primetime Emmy Awards on ABC on September 19, 1993. Even the host made history — in more ways than one. Read on for our Emmys flashback 30 years ago to 1993.
For the first time ever, the ceremony was hosted solely by a female — who was also, ironically, the unluckiest actress in Emmy history. Up for her 13th Emmy nomination that evening, Angela Lansbury guided the ceremony with her usual grace. Lansbury passed away in 2022, with the record of most Best Drama Actress bids as well as the record for most overall nominations without a win at 18. However, she wasn’t the only one nominated at this ceremony who has never won despite numerous nominations, or the only one to lay claim to an unfortunate record.

According to William Stanford Davis, the Illuminati changed his life. In the pilot episode of “Abbott Elementary he appears as the mysterious janitor Mr. Johnson in front of a whiteboard with “Illuminati” written on it in big letters, telling a group of children: “That’s who runs the world, kids.”

John Goodman was last nominated for an Emmy way back in 2010 when he earned a Limited Series/TV Movie Supporting Actor bid for “You Don’t Know Jack.”; he lost that race to David Strathairn (“Temple Grandin”). The TV vet could be about to make a return to the Emmys for the first time in a lucky 13 years thanks to his ongoing role in the “Roseanne” sequel series “The Conners.”
“The Conners” follows the titular working-class family struggling through day-to-day life in Illinois after the sudden death of the original show’s title character Roseanne (Roseanne Barr). Goodman plays Dan Conner, who was the husband to Roseanne and the father to their four children: Darlene (Sara Gilbert), Becky (Lecy Goranson), DJ (Michael Fishman), and Jerry Garcia (who was retconned in “The Conners”).
As Dan, Goodman exudes the warm, everyman charm he has long had a high currency in throughout his career.

All 7 seasons of the NBC comedy 30 Rock are available to binge on Hulu. Tina Fey created the show inspired by her experiences on Saturday Night Live, though the world of Tgs was wilder than SNL. 30 Rock was both a Hollywood industry satire and a universally relatable workplace comedy with career and dating foibles.

For three seasons, "The Newsroom" walked the slimmest of tightropes as an idealistic drama about the teams behind broadcast news. On the one hand, it needed to balance the hefty cynicism directed at media networks for their blatant partisanship and ivory-tower elitism (which it attempted to do by shaping news stories both behind the scenes and in front of a teleprompter). But the show also needed its characters to be convincingly altruistic without coming across as frustratingly naive or, perhaps worse, condescendingly didactic.
Finding such sweet spots in high-tension drama and humanistic optimism has long been creator Aaron Sorkin's bread and butter as both screenwriter and director -- from "A Few Good Men" and "Charlie Wilson's War" to the "Trial of the Chicago 7" and, of course, "The West Wing." There's not a lot worth remembering about "Revenge of the Nerds II: Nerds in Paradise," a sequel we're guessing a big chunk of people have either forgotten existed or tried to block from their memories. It was a moderate success, bringing in just over triple its 10 million production budget, so audiences were happy enough with it, but it was... not well-received by the critics. Hardly surprising, all things considered. We're not exactly talking about Oscar-bait here.
But believe it or not, the film had a lasting impact in at least one way -- and we don't mean the baffling number of additional sequels or the rumored reboot. No, we're talking about the fact that, somehow, "Revenge of the Nerds II" influenced an all-time great TV series that couldn't be further from the guys at Lambda Lambda Lambda getting into assorted debauchery on spring break: "The West Wing."

Matthew Perry wants to be "17 Again" again. The "Friends" and "Go On" actor went on SiriusXM's Pop Culture Spotlight with Jessica Shaw this week to talk about his new book. In the memoir, titled "Friends, Lovers, And The Big Terrible Thing," Perry mentions projects he has in the works, and Shaw asked him for some specifics about his unproduced film ideas. Perry then spilled the news that he wrote a script for a rom-com that he'd hoped would land a lead in Zac Efron. The film isn't related to the 2009 fantasy romance the pair starred in together, but would mark an on-screen reunion for the two, as Perry wrote himself a small role as well.
"I finished a screenplay that we're out with to some people. I want to direct that," Perry said on the podcast. "I have a small part in it. I wrote it for myself,...

The cast for Paramount+’s upcoming “Fatal Attraction” series is getting bigger.
Amanda Peet is joining the cast as Beth Gallagher, the loyal wife of Dan Gallagher (Joshua Jackson), who uncovers her husband’s sexual indiscretion with Alex Forrest (Lizzy Caplan). Peet’s character was originally by Anne Archer in the original 1987 film.
Paramount describes the new series as “a deep-dive reimagining of the classic psychosexual thriller and ‘80s cultural touchstone, the new series will explore fatal attraction and the timeless themes of marriage and infidelity through the lens of modern attitudes toward strong women, personality disorders and coercive control.” In other words, this will be a more nuanced approach than “sexy woman crazy,” which is the general, problematic sentiment of the original (admittedly still wonderful) film.

When news broke Sunday that Ed Asner died at 91, Hollywood took to social media to pay tribute to the legendary actor, activist and philanthropist.
The former president of the Screen Actors Guild, Asner is best known for playing Lou Grant in “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and its spinoff series “Lou Grant.” He also voiced the lead, Carl Fredricksen, in Pixar’s Oscar-winning tear-jerker “Up.”
As one of the few TV actors to portray the same character in both a comedy and a drama, Asner is the most awarded male performer in Emmy history with seven wins — five of them for playing Lou Grant.
Asner was a series regular on “Thunder Alley,” “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip” and “The Bronx Zoo,” and he earned Emmys for his performances on the miniseries “Roots” and “Rich Man, Poor Man.” Later in his life, Asner appeared in “Elf” alongside Will Ferrell and guest starred in “Cobra Kai.

Thomas Schlamme, the president of the Directors Guild of America who was first elected in 2017, will step down from his role next month.
Schlamme announced his departure in a farewell letter posted on the DGA website and sent to members as part of a monthly magazine. He’ll exit his role on Sept. 18 at the DGA’s upcoming Biennial Convention, at which point elections for a new president will be held.
Schlamme was initially elected to a two-year term in 2017 and was re-elected for his second term in 2019. While there’s no concrete rule about how many terms a president can serve, it’s been a tradition that presidents serve no more than two terms.
“I will be stepping down at our upcoming Biennial Convention – and look forward to a new voice leading us. And though this letter is a goodbye of sorts, more than anything it is filled with...

We know, we know. NBC’s cancellation of “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” couldn’t have come at a worse time, as Season 2 ended on an emotional cliffhanger with two characters baring their souls to each other. Even though the story of Zoey (Jane Levy), Max (Skylar Astin) and Mo (Alex Newell) won’t be continuing any time soon, it still has hope at the Emmys, as nominations-round voting takes place June 17 – June 28. Our sister site Deadline reports the musical comedy is being “shopped” to other networks, and a truckload of awards would certainly make it look more desirable to potential buyers — hint hint, Emmy voters.
Cancelled TV series get nominated for Emmy Awards all the time, and sometimes they even win. “Pushing Daisies” received the touch of death after its second season in 2009 but still managed to grasp its fingers around four trophies: Kristin Chenoweth for Best Supporting Actress, Best Art Direction,...

Early on in HBO Max’s long-awaited Friends reunion special “The One Where They Get Back Together,” series co-creator David Crane reveals the producing team’s initial vision for the show.
“We were really intrigued with the idea of doing a true ensemble. It’s not like there’s a lead and they have friends. No, it’s just about the friends. We’re following all of their stories equally.”
Friends would never have worked if Crane, Marta Kauffman, and Kevin Bright hadn’t gone six for six in the casting of the titular friends. One or two solid choices wouldn’t do it. Neither would four or five. It had to be all six.
