You can’t teach someone to be an artist; as Steven Soderbergh once noted, if you could “we’d all be Stanley Kubrick.” Yet you can teach the craft necessary for artists to express themselves, and in the case of many of the books that follow, you can provide the inspiration necessary to unlock an artist’s best and most exciting ideas. Here are 13 must-read volumes for any aspiring director, books that examine the job from a variety of technical, artistic, and logistical angles. Some are more nuts-and-bolts manuals on how to use the camera, others — the ones written by working directors like Bethany Rooney, Mary Lou Belli, and Ken Kwapis — survival guides for anyone who wants to sustain a career in the industry. Taken together, they provide a comprehensive look at what it takes to direct and arm filmmakers with the tools they need to succeed.

Grey’s Anatomy is traditionally one of Netflix’s most-watched acquired programs, so it’s only natural that the streaming giant enters the medical procedural space on its own.
Netflix has handed out a series order to Pulse, what it says is its first procedural medical drama series. The series, which is created by Zoe Robyn (The Equalizer), is set at Miami’s busiest Level 1 Trauma Center as they navigate medical emergencies and revolves around Dani Simms, a young ER doctor who is unexpectedly promoted to chief resident amid the fallout of her own provocative romantic relationship. Justina Machado returns to Netflix after starring in its One Day at a Time update and stars as Natalie Cruz, a doctor who serves as chair of surgery and emergency medicine.
Robyn and Carlton Cuse (Lost, Jack Ryan, Netflix’s own Locke and Key) will serve as co-showrunners. Both will exec produce the series.

In a world that sees movies being turned into TV shows and popular television series like Psych being turned into films ad nauseam, it's hard to imagine a time in which this just wasn't a common practice. For just over the first half-century of movie history, movies were left to take inspiration from books, plays, and legends, or were simply derived from their own original screenplays. It didn't take long for things to get shaken up after the invention of TV, though. With certain early small-screen shows instantly bursting in popularity, it only made sense for Hollywood to decide to make the jump and capitalize on them at the box office.

Jared Keeso, star of Letterkenny, had a guest cameo in Supernatural season 2 as Matt Harrison. In his role, Keeso portrayed a grieving young man dealing with guilt and lack of closure. Keeso's character in Supernatural, Matt, shares similarities with his Letterkenny character, Wayne, both involved in cheating plotlines.
Fans of the series Letterkenny may be surprised to learn that the show's star Jared Keeso also had a cameo in Supernatural. Starring Jared Padalecki as Sam Winchester and Jensen Ackles as Dean Winchester, Supernatural is a 15-season TV series that follows the Winchester brothers as they hunt ghosts, demons, monsters, and more. Like similar shows, Supernatural generally has season or even multi-season arcs that are interrupted by monster-of-the-week episodes that provide a breather between the main storyline of the show. These episodes are most likely to feature cameos and guest actors as they don't need to commit for long.

A "Suits" comeback wasn't on anyone's 2023 Bingo card, yet it was a huge year for the USA Network lawyer series. When the show dropped on Netflix last June, it became one of the streamers' biggest hits, reportedly accruing 3 billion minutes watched every week for much of the summer. The series' creator, Aaron Korsh, suspected its resurgence had something to do with the show's relatability and "inherent optimism," as he told The Hollywood Reporter in August 2023. But the show's cast could have also had something to do with it: future ex-royal Meghan Markle starred in the legal procedural for its first seven seasons alongside leading men Patrick J. Adams and Gabriel Macht.
When "Suits" started, USA Network seemed to have already established a pretty standard formula for success: cast hot people, write fast-paced scripts, and keep storylines adventurous. It worked for shows like "Burn Notice" and "Psych," and given the longevity of "Suits,...

Procedural TV shows like Doctor Who and Lucifer have transcended the traditional format and added expansive worlds and fantastical elements. Shows like Psych and iZombie have taken the procedural format and infused it with comedy, making for unique and entertaining storylines. Suits and Monk deviate from typical procedural shows by featuring characters who break the rules and have distinct traits.
Procedural TV shows are some of the most popular and enduring shows in existence thanks to their one-shot narratives, but some shows managed to take this format even further. Typical procedural shows deal with criminal activity, court cases, or medical dramas. They tell a new story in each installment which allows viewers to drop in and out as they please without relying on understanding a complex or long-winded backstory.

Roy Tillman's one-liner to Danish Graves in Fargo is a near-direct quote from an old episode of The Simpsons. Despite being a reference, the "smart" quote reveals that Roy can't handle being outsmarted and will go to great lengths to get what he wants. The Simpsons quote conflicts with Roy's Christian and conservative values, suggesting he might not have actually seen the episode.
Sheriff Roy Tillman’s sinister line to Danish Graves in Fargo season 5, episode 8, “Blanket,” is a strange callback to a 25-year-old episode of a classic sitcom. For the first time in the season, “Blanket” sees Tillman one step behind his enemies. In retaliation for Tillman blocking Lorraine’s bank purchase, Graves recruits three debtors to legally change their names to Roy Tillman and mock the real Tillman at a debate on the campaign trail. This prank leads to Tillman losing his temper in public and jeopardizing his re-election campaign.

A crossover between Psych and Monk in a fourth movie would fulfill a 10-year-old tease and add excitement for viewers. The quirky and fun characters from Monk interacting with the beloved characters from Psych would prevent the fourth movie from feeling stale. The release of Monk's Last Case confirms that a Psych crossover is possible, as Monk is still working and living in San Francisco.
The perfect story for Pysch 4 has already been set up and would pay off a decade-old crossover tease. Following the story of crime consultants, Shawn Spencer and Burton "Gus" Guster, Psych gained incredible popularity during its eight-season run. Spencer's unbelievable observational skills and Gus's incredible intelligence make the show memorable and set it apart from other shows in the detective fiction genre. Luckily for those who enjoyed the show, the end of the Psych series did not mean bidding adieu to Shawn and Gus. There...

When it comes to Christmas episodes of Psych, “The Polarizing Express” is unique in its complexity and chaos. Compared to the previous Christmas specials (“Gus’s Dad May Have Killed an Old Guy” and “Christmas Joy”) and the following movie, this particular wintertime adventure with Shawn (James Roday-Rodriguez) and Gus (Dulé Hill) pulls from several Christmas classics, including It’s a Wonderful Life and A Christmas Carol, to pay homage, as well as weaving its own life lessons into the story beneath the show’s unique brand of goofy humor.

Andy Breckman has an exciting idea for a potential sequel to the Monk movie, but is keeping it a secret for now. The reaction to the movie has been positive, increasing the chances of another Monk installment. The success of the Psych movie sequels and USA Network's renewed interest in producing original shows may pave the way for a sequel.
With the private detective back on screen, creator Andy Breckman offers a cheeky tease for a Mr. Monk's Last Case: A Monk Movie sequel. The Peacock movie itself acted as a sequel revival to the long-running mystery comedy show, finding the eponymous eccentric detective being drawn out of retirement when his stepdaughter's fiancé dies in a suspicious accident just before their wedding. Tony Shalhoub returns to lead the ensemble Mr. Monk's Last Case cast alongside fellow show vets Traylor Howard, Jason Gry-Stanford, Melora Hardin, Hector Elizondo and Ted Levine.

Burn Notice had consistent viewership and received praise for its dialogue and actors' performances. There is interest and availability for the main cast to return for a revival of the show. A potential revival could explore the open-ended storyline of Michael and Fiona's fake deaths and their life after leaving the spy business.
The series Burn Notice ended in 2013, but recent television trends and interest from the series' stars indicate now is the best time for a revival. The series followed Michael Westen, a former spy, played by Jeffrey Donovan. After Michael Westen was burned, being forced to leave the CIA, he resided in Miami and worked as a private investigator. The series is known for its witty dialogue, engaging narrative, and the cast of characters.

Psych's unique blend of comedy and mystery has made it a beloved TV show with highly quotable moments. The show's witty banter and clever pop culture references add to its lighthearted tone and engaging storytelling. The humorous quotes from the characters, such as Shawn Spencer and Burton "Gus" Guster, reflect their playful and irreverent personalities.
Psych has made its mark in television history for its lighthearted and consistent humor, which runs rampant with its witty and hilarious quotes. We still miss watching the exemplary duo Shawn Spencer (James Roday Rodriguez) and Burton Guster (Dulé Hill) as they captured criminals — and our hearts — for eight seasons of the hilarious crime show Psych, created by Steve Franks. Shawn and Gus put away the most cunning criminals with the help of Shawn's super-sharp observation skills and Guster's knowledge of obscure things and pharmaceuticals. When they seem stumped, they go to Shawn's dad, retired police officer Henry Spencer (Corbin Bernsen), or even the police department once in a while. But out of 121 episodes, which Psych villain is the show's trickiest and most cunning mastermind?...

When Monk premiered in 2002, the series was unique in many ways -- and the Peacock movie Mr. Monk's Last Case is able to capture almost all of them. But television has changed a lot since TV viewers met Adrian Monk, and where the movie falls flat is in trying to update the classic world of Monk for a 2020s audience. Mr. Monk's Last Case gives fans everything they've been waiting for, but in a much more self-conscious package.
It's no surprise that Peacock got around to making a Monk movie. Series creator Andy Breckman had tried to make one in 2012. The "Monk in Quarantine" short that premiered on Peacock Presents: The At-Home Variety Show Featuring Seth MacFarlane was universally well-received in 2020, and Peacock is home to two of the three Psych movies. But it's worth noting that Monk paved the way for shows like Psych; it was USA's first smash hit,...

USA Network, known for hit shows like Suits, is returning to making original scripted TV shows inspired by its past successes. Despite ending on USA in 2019, Suits found success on Netflix and Peacock this year, likely prompting the network's decision. The network plans to create new shows inspired by its 2010s hits like Suits, Burn Notice, Monk, and Psych, with shows expected to premiere in 2025.
USA Network, the channel behind the recent streaming hit Suits, will be going back to making original scripted TV shows, inspired by popular shows it created in the 2010s. The network stopped producing new scripted series in 2020, with its only original series as of writing, Chucky, having been developed for Syfy as well. However, Suits became a hit on Netflix and Peacock this year despite ending on USA in 2019.
Now, TVLine reports USA Network is gearing up to create new scripted programming following Suits' unprecedented streaming success.

Exclusive: USA Network’s “blue sky” series of the 2000s and early 2010s are having a moment this year between Suits‘ blockbuster run on Netflix, which broke streaming records and led to a potential offshoot series at NBC, and the Monk reunion movie, which premieres today on Peacock and already is getting awards recognition.
Now the brand is making its way back to where it started, on the USA Network. NBCUniversal’s ad-supported cable net is plotting a return to original scripted programming with light, frothy character-based procedurals in the mold of the lineup from the “blue sky”era that included Monk, Burn Notice, Psych, Royal Pains, White Collar and Suits, Deadline has learned.

Plot: Monk returns to solve one last, very personal case involving his beloved stepdaughter Molly, a journalist preparing for her wedding.
Review: Running for eight years on USA, Monk held the title of the most-watched scripted series in cable history until the debut of The Walking Dead. Wrapping up in 2009, Adrian Monk returned briefly in a Covid-19 short showing the Ocd detective coping during the lockdown. Now, fourteen years after the series finale, Monk returns in his first full-length mystery, Mr. Monk’s Last Case. Reuniting the four main stars and a couple of key supporting players, Mr. Monk’s Last Case follows the detective getting back into the groove as he investigates a murder that hits very close to home. Setting up potential future standalone mystery films led by Tony Shalhoub, this is a decent story that plays more like an extended episode of the series rather than a fully realized movie.

It’s like they forgot. Back in 2005, USA introduced the slogan “Characters welcome” which celebrated the network’s “blue sky” programming. Dramas like Suits, Burn Notice, Psych, Royal Pains, and Monk were emblematic of the kind of optimistic series that dominated USA’s lineup. Yes, there was drama, but not the gritty kind; the characters were flawed, but not in a dark disturbing way; and the series were entertaining, but not so complex that you needed a flowchart to keep track of all the characters.

"The Amityville Horror" is one of the definitive haunted house films, a classic tale about paranormal activity terrorizing a suburban family with swarming flies, mysterious voices, and sudden illness. Even the windows resemble ominous eyes peering down on the unsuspecting victims. The movie taps into the religious undertones popularized by other 1970s releases such as "The Exorcist" and "The Omen," suggesting there is a Satanic force at work that must be destroyed.
Eventually, the new owners George and Kathy Lutz discover the horrifying history of their new home: Ronald DeFeo Jr. murdered his entire family with a rifle one year prior, a Satanic worshipper named John Ketchum once lived on the land, and the house itself was built on a Shinnecock burial ground.
Despite receiving mixed reviews for elements like the cheesy portrayal of a possessed George, "The Amityville Horror" ended up having a significant impact on the horror genre.

Matt Shakman is a legendary television director. Few people in the TV industry are as trusted as Shakman when it comes to introducing a specific television show's tone and style to the world. He's a chameleonic filmmaker who can adapt to any kind of story and vibe. He's directed great episodes of Everwood, Psych, House, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Children's Hospital, The Good Wife, You're the Worst, Game of Thrones, The Boys, Succession, and of course, every episode of the acclaimed MCU series WandaVision (which undoubtedly led to him being chosen as the director of the upcoming Marvel version of The Fantastic Four).

While John Carpenter's Vampires did divide critics upon release, the horror-action movie’s cast went on to some pretty impressive roles. Vampires is something of an anomaly in the legendary horror filmmaker’s canon. An offbeat blend of Western tropes, vampire lore, and gory horror, Vampires follows a group of hard-drinking, foul-mouthed vampire hunters led by Jack Crow. Crow was raised by the Catholic Church to kill vampires and assembled a team of hyper-competent killers, but almost all of them were wiped out shortly after the movie’s opening scene by the main villain, Jan Valek.
While Vampires isn’t John Carpenter’s best horror movie, it is a fun genre mash-up that contains a few memorable scenes. While Jack’s best friend Tony takes Katrina, a prostitute with a psychic connection to Valek, hostage, Jack is forced to pair up with the well-meaning but inexperienced Father Adam Guiteau to take down the centuries-old vampire.
