This is the movie which has changed how I look at life.
Praphat123430 April 2008
This is a movie for people who takes life for granted. In our pursuit of happiness, we forget simple things in life. This movie will remind us that what makes life worth living is our simple tasks and activities in our daily living. We don't have to grasp our widest dream to enjoy our life. After I have watched this movie, I go to gym every day just to enjoy running and weight lifting, knowing that one day I would be old and that my age would prevent me from doing things I am capable of doing now. Just like Aya, she soon lost her abilities to do things she used to do. The different is that time comes quick on her. But surely, her life reflects our life that we are getting older everyday. This is the movie which has changed the way I look at life.

the love beyond death
athena-no-sainto23 March 2011
This movie is most faithful to the book and the real story of Aya than the TV show with the same name. This film is beautiful, sad and at the same time full of hope, the girl never gave up even knowing that her disease was impossible to cure.Is also the story about a mother who does everything she is capable of to look after her daughter..the story tell us how painful love can be. the performances of the movie are brilliant, and the message is clear, don't give up, life is precious. it make us think how much we complain about unimportant things, when we must feel blessed by the gift of be alive.I saw that film before the show and i must admit that I love both

LITERALLY a litre of tears.
fatpiglet2226 March 2008
Just to clear things up, this is the FILM "1 Litre of Tears", not the drama starring Sawajiri Erika. I honestly find it a pity that the drama is so well-known, yet the film isn't. Not that the drama wasn't great - I just think the film was much better. Onishi completely delved into the role and delivered an outstanding performance. Just watching her struggle to move around made me cry like crazy.

To be perfectly frank, I didn't pay much attention to much of the film's elements - camera, lighting, setting. I don't think that's a bad thing, really; it just goes to show how powerful the actors' performances were, so much so it becomes all you care about. The casting was perfect! I don't think the film would have had as much of an impact if Sawajiri were cast in Kito Aya's role here. The music was perfect, pacing perfect, character build-up perfect..... I don't know, I can't really find much fault with the film.

Honestly. This WILL make you cry a litre of tears.

"Just being alive is such a lovely and wonderful thing..."

Ichi rittoru no namida (1 litre of tears)

This Japanese dorama is about a girl who was diagnosed with a disease called Spinocerebellar Degeneration when she was 15 years old, and was able to continue her life until her death at the age of 25 years old.

The plot is based on the true story of a Japanese girl named Kito Aya, who had the same disease. She kept writing in her diary to remember her experiences until she could no longer hold a pen. Aya simply wished to live until the end of her life, and the purpose of writing in the diary was to remind herself to not give up. She shed tears many times, at the same time encompassed by the rich love and support from her family, friends, and boyfriend. Her diary "1 Litre of Tears" was published after her death, because of its inspiring and courageous message of, "Just being alive is such a lovely and wonderful thing." So far, over 18,000,000 copies of her diary have been sold.

This J-dorama really made me cry at least 2 liters of tears! I have not for a long time seen anything this sad. Erika Sawajiri made a great personification of Aya. Truly touching story, and the music is wonderful. 11 episodes full of true feelings, love, sadness and family values. I strongly recommend this drama series to everyone!

Strongly Recommended!

i agree with the previous comment. i have not seen anything so sad for a long time. i'm not a guy who is really into Japanese drama/movie. but this show really changed my mind. i have to take back my words for my serious doubt about the acting. the movie carries a heart-warming message about appreciating every moments of our lives. Aya's only wish was "to live." By carefully depicting Aya's earnest desire to live, and the love of her family, friends, and lover. The drama, wishes to deliver her simple but strong message: "Just being alive is such a lovely and wonderful thing."

everyone, especially Erika Sawajiri and her family's acting was superb. i have to admit i cried a lot of times during the show. absolutely a touching Japanese drama series that should not be missed by anyone.

go watch it!

Please Watch this MOVIE!!! (...Not the TV drama...)
GreenSeacoast1 November 2006
first of all i......in case you guys didn't know, this one is th MOVIE version of 1 Litre of Tears, NOT the TV series one!!! The one with Erika is the TV series which they filmed at 2005,after the released of the MOVIE version(2004),and this one is the the MOVIE website... don't mess up

I think Asae Oeshi done a wonderful job by doing this role, she acts much better than the TV drama one. She may not pretty as Erika but she sure can act. They add a lot of conflicts and that "boyfriend" who didn't exist in the reality. This movie is more based on the reality, and all the acting are more realistic.

Please go watch it

A young girls struggle with a very cruel disease
ryan-oosterberg17 January 2007
1 litre of tears is a very touching story about a young girls struggle with a very cruel disease. A disease which takes away all the things she loves, one by one.

As Aya-chan struggles, all people around her are struggling with her. Share the pain, sadness, but also love and joy with aya's family.

This dorama show is something great, it has a huge impact on every living soul, also and more important it is the legacy and dream of a young girl. With not only the book 1 litre of tears , bases on aya's diaries, but also this dorama show, aya's dream is fulfilled and will continue to live on.

domo arigatou aya-chan, for you will not be forgotten.

one tip for people who are going to watch this show: please have tissues next to you this show is 100% tears guaranteed

Nice but the TV series is way better.
takeshi-mekaru8 May 2022
Contrary to what at least one person has said here, I think the TV series is way better than the movie. And this is also supported by the higher ratings the TV series has against this one (8.7, comprising of 2.5k evaluators against a score of 7.8 and 1.3k evaluators). The acting is better, the story and the script, the drama, the soundtrack... Basically everything is better, more detailed, poetic and dramatic. Don't know if the movie is indeed more faithful to the true story or not but who cares? Who said it has to be? It is not a documentary and arts doesn't have to be faithful to reality. The point is that the TV series delivers a way more powerful/ impactful message than the movie. If it was possible I would rate this movie 6.5 instead of 7 but 6 I think is not fair so I rated it 7.

1 litre of everything
Arirang200929 November 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Here we have me again out for an another review, and this time im going to tell you about this movie, a masterpiece of its own kind, indeed.

Just to clear some misunderstandings out; this IS the MOVIE and not the TV series. Erika Sawajiri is NOT starring in this flick, the actress who plays Kitou Aya in this movie is Asae Onishi.

And Asae Onishi makes an excellent work playing Ayas role, in fact it completely blends out the low budget of this film. Her face and her smile - and what a smile - are among many things that you never will forget after watching this film. The whole movie trough, has some kind of authentic feeling, of really "being there", even if it sometimes tends to be a bit messy (mostly due to the fact that many might have been watching the TV version before this flick).

The whole set shows us a lot of interesting aspects as well; one of them is the view the Japanese society had on people which at that time, and even these days, have an illness or mentality disturbance. Except for a very sad and true story about a sick girl, we also get in touch with the society itself (a sociality aspect), as well how they treated them in the special schools etch. It is needless to say; this film is more than just a story about someone suffering from Spinocerebellum Axtia.

Overall, there's really nothing i can tell about this film in a negative ways, the only CON i can give is the length, the story could have been at least one hour longer.

And just for the heck of it, i can compare this between the TV version as i've been watching it as well:

The TV version draws the attention completely out of focus, to a very cute girl named Erika Sawajiri rather than actually show her illness. Sadly enough, someone here actually said "She (Asae Onishii) is not cute as Erika Sawajiri but..." in a review suppose to be for the MOVIE version i guess...?

Beside its somewhat strange atmosphere (everyone seem to be either too happy or too cute or too sad), they have added lots of stuff that is just pure fictional, and a love story in the middle of everything that does not fit into the story at all (and the name of that character is Haruku, come on give me a break!), as Aya (Erika) herself - well, her acting is just ridiculous, it looks like someone that just fakes it, simply putted. They just blast every detail into absurdum, making stories "around the corner" as it drags along for 11 episodes. It did started off with a powerful episode 1, i have to admit! But after that... no.

The whole series both feels fictional and very unrealistic as they really tried to show everything (and plus some more), but if you don't give a darn in the real story behind it, it is indeed watch able.

The Movie version on the other hand left out a lot, but i think its not necessary to show everything as the director maybe wanted us to imagine the other half of the film, which is a very powerful aspect as well, i mean, Aya will stay in our hearts afterwards, right? How would you like to end Aya's life? Indeed, the "other half" of Aya lived in her dairies.

I give this MOVIE version 9/10 and the TV VERSION 4/10.

Thank you.

Incredible !!!

Incredible!!

The TV series version is great (no idea about the Movie), the pace of story in series is perfect, and the performance of actors and actresses are superb. Above all the story is the simply amazing.

This story certainly changes our view of life, and makes us realize that 'u don't know what u have till its gone'. It inspires us to enjoy our life and become a useful person.

Indeed a gr8 movie !!!

Talking about Erika, (oh my god!) she has the best smile of the world. She makes us smile when she smiles, and makes us cry when she cries.

paritkatre1 May 2022
This is my first ever review about any shows . Well i watched the orignal old tv series not thiis movie but , Looking back at this series I can say this is an life changing and unforgettable (sad/bittersweet) I will never forget throughout my entire life . This series makes us rethink about things we takes for granted , make us realize those things we already had , some doesn't . Whenever you ever feel down in life and crossed your enduring limit and having thought about taking that step rethink about what valuable things you gonna lose , i guarantee this series will make changes in you , good changes .
