That's right, The Rock and the Michael Clarke, two of biggest men in currently working in motion pictures happen to be the best of palls and when they shared the big screen for the first time in The Scorpion King, they also merited their own little documentary segment on the DVD. Director Chuck Russell claims that the most fun anybody ever had during the production was when these two big guys got together. And indeed, notice that in the behind the scenes footage, sidekick Grant Heslov attempts to add lib a joke and nobody laughs, but between takes, Rock and MC are constantly grinning.
It turns out that Rock (as he was still known at the time) and MC were good pals beforehand so when producer Kevin Misher mentioned he was looking for someone to play Little John to Rock's Robin Hood, the man soon to be known again as Dwayne Johnson called his good buddy with three first names but no last one and Triple First immediately said yes. Of course that was just the start of a an equal amount of on-set camaraderie and rivalry that is still going on in the press junkets interviews also incorporated into this short documentary. In these instances, the two of them are in civilian clothes and (seperately) surrounded by posters of the film as well as a collection of props and some very fake looking flames made out of paper and air.
There is also a bit of controversy going on here: during the long awaited fight scene that the two of them had been looking forward to all during the shoot, MC accidentally took the Rock's elbow solidly in to jaw. At first the six time world wrestling entertainment champion tries to play the incident down by saying only the tip of his elbow connected with his friend, but when Duncan begins claiming he was only knocked down to one knee, not all the way out as both Rock and Russell confirm, the old adversaries flare up once more. Anyway, the incident was caught on film and is included in this short. Still, MCD had the last laugh by playing up his injury and making TR squirm a bit afterward. Also, the Rock also attempts to impersonate Michael Clarke's impressive baritone but fails in the attempt. So that goes to prove there's at least one thing the man can't do.
