Bill Ireton, President and Representative Director of Warner Entertainment Japan is to step down from his post in March. Ireton has been with Warner Bros for 26 years and has been instrumental in its Japanese operations, including several successful local-language films. Millard Ochs will take over as head of the studio’s Japanese business and will begin working with Ireton in December.
This year will be Warner Entertainment Japan’s most profitable since 2009. While box office in Japan for imports has dropped somewhat over the past few years, local movies are riding high. Warner produced late-2014 box office hits Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno and Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends, which together are expected to gross nearly $90M.
Along with the Rurouni movies, Ireton shepherded such films as 2010′s Saigo No Chushingura, 2011′s Paradise Kiss, 2013′s The Straw Shield and Yurusarezarumono, and this year’s Kurohitsuji. Initially, Ireton established a...

Amy Reeder
Here is an interview with Amy Reeder, former artist for DC Comics’ Batwoman, Supergirl, and Madame Xanadu. She is about to work on a creator owned project for Image Comics called Rocket Girl with Brandon Montclare, her former editor on Madame Xanadu. I caught up with Reeder and talked about her influences, work on Batwoman, the differences between creator owned and mainstream work, and who she would cast in Batwoman movie.
SoS: What is the first comic you remember reading?
Amy Reeder: It was Chynna Clugston’s Blue Monday. It was at the tail end of college. My sister-in-law was reading comics so I read her Blue Monday. [On starting reading comics late] I started really late just because it didn’t feel really accessible. I didn’t know how to get into comics. It seemed like it was just for guys. I wasn’t super girly, but I wasn’t a tomboy or anything.

Though he’s best known for his gorgeously animated fantasy stories, Hayao Miyazaki has decided to go a different route by basing his next film off the life of the man who designed the plane used to attack Pearl Harbor.
After previous reports indicated that Miyazaki‘s next film would be biographical and “not the sort of work that everyone in the audience can relax and watch,” Japanese animators Osamu Kobayashi (Paradise Kiss) and Takashi Hashimoto (Samurai Horror Tales) recently tweeted more about the project’s plot. The film will focus on the life of Jiro Horikoshi, the designer of the Zero fighter plane used to bomb Pearl Harbor during World War II. Horikoshi, an aeronautical engineer, developed many military aircrafts, the Zero being the most notable of his inventions. Reports indicate that Studio Ghibli, the studio behind all of Miyazaki‘s films since 1985, has fulfilled a large-scale search for...

It was previously announced that Hayao Miyazaki's next film will be biographical and "not the sort of work that everyone in the audience can relax and watch". The latest information regarding the film has come from the tweets by a couple of Japanese animators, Osamu Kobayashi (Paradise Kiss) and Takashi Hashimoto (Samurai Horror Tales). It appears that Miyazaki's new film will be based on the life of Jiro Horikoshi, the man who designed the Zero fighter plane used in the attack on Pearl Harbor during World War II. Horikoshi was an aeronautical engineer who developed a number of military aircrafts, with Zero being his most famous invention. Studio Ghibli is reported to have carried out a large-scale search for animators skilled at drawing aeroplanes to work on...

More manga hits the screen with “Paradise Kiss”, a live action version of the popular comic from “Nana” creator Yazawa Ai. Another title aimed at the female demographic, the film revolves around the adventures and romances of a young high school girl in the fashion industry, played here by actress Kitagawa Keiko (“Placing Me Back Together”), herself a real life model. Directed by Shinjo Takehiko, who also adapted the manga “I Give My First Love to You”, and with a script from Bando Kenji (“Midnight Sun”), the film also stars upcoming talent Mukai Osamu (“Hanamizuki”), with support from Kaku Kento (“Shuffle”), Igarashi Shunji (“Rookies”) and Osama Aya (“A Liar and a Broken Girl”). Kitagawa Keiko stars as Yukari Hayakasa, a hard working, though not particularly talented high school student trying to focus on her upcoming university entrance exams, spurred on by her mother. Her life changes when she is approached...

Many of us are in the midst of mourning/celebrating Tokyopop, which closed up shop in the United States last month. The fate of many ongoing series is undetermined (and Amazon is unable to fulfill orders for them), but as we wait and wonder at their fate, we can go back and catch up on or look anew at over 300 titles offered through their house around the world. The most popular titles over the years have been my personal favorite, Fruits Basket, along with Mobile Suit Gundam, Paradise Kiss, Sailor Moon, Saiyuki, PhD: Phantasy Degree, Suikoden, Angelic Layer, Devil May Cry, Cowboy Bebop, Magic Knight Rayearth, .hack, Jing: King of Bandits, Dramacon, Bizenghast, Anima, Pet Shop of Horrors, Kingdom Hearts, and the more recent and bestselling additions to their list, Priest, Gakuen Alice, Alice in the Country of Hearts, Butterfly, and Pavane for the Dead. Here is a look at...

This edition of Otaku Trauma, I’ll be reviewing the first two episodes for the animes with some of the longest names of the season. That’s right, it’s time for [C] and AnoHana!
Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae o Boku-tachi wa Mada Shiranai
“We still don’t know the name of the flower we saw that day”
Six childhood friends were inseparable during the summer. After a tragic accident, they split apart, unable to recover. Some years later (I’m guessing between five and ten years), the former leader of the group, Jin-tan, begins having stress related visions of Menma begging him to grant her final wish.
Anyone who enjoys Makoto Shinkai’s works or movies, like The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and Summer Wars, will likely enjoy this show. The first episode followed Jin-tan as he tried to cope with Menma’s appearance and the demons (not literal) that haunt him.

A few days ago, Eiga.com posted a new trailer for Takehiko Shinjo’s Paradise Kiss, a live-action film adaptation of a manga by Ai Yazawa.
Plot: Yukari Hayasaka (Keiko Kitagawa) commutes to a prestigious private high school in Tokyo every day, but recently she’s been having doubts about her lifestyle which has her constantly bouncing back and forth between her normal classes and cram school as per her parents’ wishes. One day, she’s scouted as a model for an aspiring fashion designer named George Koizumi (Osamu Mukai). Yukari is puzzled by the fashion world at first, but witnessing people chase their dreams with a single-minded focus eventually inspires her to find her own path.
Warner Bros will be releasing “Paradise Kiss” in Japan on June 4, 2011.

On Tuesday, Keiko Kitagawa revealed on her blog that she’s done filming Paradise Kiss, the much-anticipated live-action adaptation of Ai Yazawa’s manga of the same name.
Kitagawa thanked everyone involved in the shoot, while adding that her next stop will be the hair salon where she can finally get her hair cut. The shoot had been going on for three months, a fairly long haul for modern Japanese films, so she hasn’t been able to make any changes to her appearance until now.
In addition to Paradise Kiss, Kitagawa also had major roles in “Shikeidai no Elevator” and “Matataki” earlier this year. Combine that with her commercial work and numerous fashion magazine shoots, and she’s barely had any time to rest. And although she’s admitted in recent blog entries that her schedule has been pretty grueling lately, she doesn’t plan on taking a break anytime soon.
