Day 1, 6:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. : with Alexis Drazen in surgery and new intel regarding the day's events, Jack and Mason drive to Saugus together after hearing David Palmer found an interesting address in Victor Drazen confidential file. While helping out, the Senator also decides to reveal the truth about Keith to the press, much to Sherry's disappointment. At the opposite end of town, Teri Bauer is targeted by a terrorist, and Kim ends up in jail during a drug bust.
After three slightly sub-par episodes (due to the amnesia ploy), the season finally gets back on track: this time, Teri's actions aren't dictated by memory problems, but sheer survival instinct, a fact that makes her scenes the most dramatic of this particular show.
Also refreshing is the Bauer/Mason relationship: in the pilot, they seemed to be bitter enemies, and spent half of the day working against each other; now, realizing what's at stake, old grudges are set aside, and thanks to the charisma of both actors (watching Xander Berkeley verbally brutalize his subordinates in previous shows was one of Day 1's highlights) their conversations are a treat for the ears.
Finally, Haysbert reaches new acting heights as he brings his role to a more complex level and makes Palmer the most interesting political character ever shown on TV alongside Martin Sheen's President Bartlet from The West Wing: they're both honest, courageous and truly concerned about their nation's welfare; in fact, the only defect they have is neither of them really exists.
