Fathers, Mothers, Daughters and Son

On the day of the California Presidential Primary, between 6:00 PM and 7:00 PM, Teri does not recall the password to deactivate the alarm system of her house, the security guards immediately arrive and the terrorist is not temporarily able to reach Phil and her. David Palmer calls Jack and tells the address in Saugus that was in the missing file. Mason drives Jack to the remote location apparently in the middle of nowhere for investigation. Kim gets in serious trouble since Frank is dealing ecstasy with dangerous drug dealers, actually undercover DEA detectives, and she is arrested with Rick after a raid in the house. David Palmer calls a press conference and tells the truth about the cover up of the accidental death of Gibson by Keith, promoted by a group of businessmen from Los Angeles that are giving financial support to his campaign. Nina tries to tell Jack that Kim and Teri are missing but is blocked by Mason, and Tony saves Teri after the breaking in of the criminal in her house.

In the nineteenth episode of "24", David Palmer proves that he is really a man of honor. Nina shows that she is a real friend of Jack. It is amazing the ability of Kim to get into trouble. And my feeling is that the dirty George Mason was Jamey's umbrella in CTU. My vote is nine.

Getting closer...
MaxBorg8920 December 2007
Day 1, 6:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. : with Alexis Drazen in surgery and new intel regarding the day's events, Jack and Mason drive to Saugus together after hearing David Palmer found an interesting address in Victor Drazen confidential file. While helping out, the Senator also decides to reveal the truth about Keith to the press, much to Sherry's disappointment. At the opposite end of town, Teri Bauer is targeted by a terrorist, and Kim ends up in jail during a drug bust.

After three slightly sub-par episodes (due to the amnesia ploy), the season finally gets back on track: this time, Teri's actions aren't dictated by memory problems, but sheer survival instinct, a fact that makes her scenes the most dramatic of this particular show.

Also refreshing is the Bauer/Mason relationship: in the pilot, they seemed to be bitter enemies, and spent half of the day working against each other; now, realizing what's at stake, old grudges are set aside, and thanks to the charisma of both actors (watching Xander Berkeley verbally brutalize his subordinates in previous shows was one of Day 1's highlights) their conversations are a treat for the ears.

Finally, Haysbert reaches new acting heights as he brings his role to a more complex level and makes Palmer the most interesting political character ever shown on TV alongside Martin Sheen's President Bartlet from The West Wing: they're both honest, courageous and truly concerned about their nation's welfare; in fact, the only defect they have is neither of them really exists.

Jack and Mason back on the track
Ascola23 October 2006
This is by far not the first episode where Jack and Mason sort of reunite again i. e. stop working against each other, but this episode cements this new agreement, and it does so in a complex and therefore interesting way. Mason is drawn as a rather cold and authoritative, also controlling superior, but may it be the writers intention, may it be Xander Berkeley as an actor or a nice merger of these two factors: Mason is also an entertaining element in the series and can be quite a nice guy too, seeing his limits and cunningly arranging things around his limitations instead of giving other people a hard time because of them... what I'm trying to say is: Mason realizes that he himself will never have the ability to solve this case, so he simply follows Jack and also lets him do his job. And Jack, appreciating that he's not hindered to do what he thinks best, readily involves his superior who therefore can stay on top of what's happening. Both help each other out. Jack doesn't think hierarchically, so he doest't mind Mason getting nowhere without him and kind of using him as long as he can work. Also this means Mason accepts Jacks work. The pair is having a nice conversation demonstrating all that in the car on their way to the power station.

Mason deceives Jack by not telling him about his family in this episode. So it becomes clear: the two won't become friends. But even this betrayal doesn't affect their new good companionship.

The only question remains whether it is really convincing that Mason forgets about their initial fight. Somehow it's unbelievable this character should change so much. And also I always kept wondering what kind of information Mason originally kept hidden from Jack - because after Jack has the information, just as much is happening as when he didn't have it: nothing.

Back for seconds

The show is great, but second time around it gets a bit campy. The Palmers should have a reality show. Dysfunctional clan. Kim is a whole other story.

Well Constructed
Hitchcoc4 October 2018
Three plots going on. First of all, Kim is caught in a house with a bunch of drug dealers. One is the brother of the guy that was shot at the compound. He is awaiting some guys for a stash of ecstasy. She wants to leave but it is not going to happen. Palmer finally faces the music when it comes to his son, risking the wrath of the electorate. The third plot is Jack attempting to get the guys who are after him and the Senator.

Who is dumber, Terri or Kim?
Johnny_West3 May 2021
At the beginning of this season (1), I was rooting for Jack's wife and daughter. After a few episodes of Kim's total teenage entitled diva routine, I keep hoping somebody will blow her away.

Her Mom has managed to be more annoying just because she is totally dysfunctional and stupid too. Not to mention that anyone that can manage to park a car on the edge of a cliff so it falls off the cliff with her kid inside has got be part vegetable.

At this point, I wonder if either Kim or her Mom can go to the local mall without getting people murdered or accidentally killed? Kim manages to track down the guy who kidnapped her because she has a crush on him, and wants to do her best to get murdered. Unfortunately, she survives

While Kim and her Mom are going from one dumb mistake to another, Jack thinks they are fine, because Mason has never told him that their safe house was attacked.

To be honest, this series is starting to remind me of The Little Rascals, where all the kids were off the rails crazy but there was always a happy ending. Throw in The Three Stooges and the mash-up would be 24.
