- Audrey Raines: [Over the phone] Kim just arrived here at CTU
- Jack Bauer: What'd you say to her?
- Audrey Raines: Nothing yet
- Jack Bauer: Good, I want her to hear it from me
- Audrey Raines: It might be easier for her if she knows you're alive before she sees you: when I first saw you, it...
- Jack Bauer: [Interrupts her] yeah I know, I understand. When you talk to her, just explain the reason I couldn't tell her I was still alive is because I was trying to protect her
- Audrey Raines: Of course I will
- Jack Bauer: [Before hanging up] thank you
- Barry Landes: [while at CTU] you ok?
- Kim Bauer: Both my parents died here, I swore I'd never come back to this place
- Barry Landes: We can leave right now if you want
- Kim Bauer: [Before Audrey enters the room] no she's coming
- Audrey Raines: Kim, hi
- Kim Bauer: [Introducing him] this is Barry Landes
- Audrey Raines: [Shakes his hand] Audrey Raines
- Kim Bauer: So what is it? What did you have to tell me that's so important?
- Audrey Raines: I think it's better if we talked in private
- Kim Bauer: Whatever you have to say, you can say it in front of Barry
- Audrey Raines: Kim, I really think...
- Barry Landes: [Interrupts Audrey] it's ok
- Audrey Raines: It's about your father
- Kim Bauer: What about my father?
- Audrey Raines: His alive
- Audrey Raines: [after Kim is silent] Kim, he wanted to tell you but he couldn't in order to protect you: someone inside the government wanted your father dead, so he staged his own death and went underground. He knew you wouldn't be safe if he told you he was still alive, I didn't know either until this morning. I thought maybe if I told you now if you saw him, it might be a little bit easier. His on his way in now to CTU
- Jack Bauer: [while in an interrogation room] damn it, I don't believe you became a part of this because of "self interest", I honestly believe what you think what you're doing right now is the best thing for this country but it is not your choice to make
- Christopher Henderson: That's good: "disarm your subject by showing empathy and respect for his agenda"
- Jack Bauer: This is not a joke, thousands of lives are at stake. People we promised to protect, to make feel safe, there's enough time for you to tell me what I need to know to stop this insanity, please
- Christopher Henderson: I'm sorry, I really am but I can't tell you what you want to know
- Mike Novick: [to the Vice President] I thought you'd be in Salt Lake City today?
- President Charles Logan: Hal canceled his engagement so he could be here. I think you'd agree we need all hands on deck to deal with this Sentox situation?
- Mike Novick: Of course Mr. President
- President Charles Logan: Ok, so what's on your mind Hal?
- Mike Novick: When these terrorists attack, you're going to need to "maintain" order and I submit to you the plan you're implementing to CTU is inadequate
- Mike Novick: [to Logan] Sir, it was drawn up after a careful study of an attack of just this magnitude: CTU is already coordinating with first responders
- President Charles Logan: [to Mike] fine, then they should still do so
- Vice President Hal Gardner: [to Logan] but what I'm proposing is something far more "sweeping" and I believe it's warranted by the facts
- Vice President Hal Gardner: [after instructing his assistant to prepare a presentation on a monitor] to begin with, I'm revising all of CTU's casualty estimates: based on the assumptions, the terrorists will hit all of these high profile targets: hospitals, malls, and sporting arenas. My low estimate is four hundred thousand casualties
- President Charles Logan: That's a "considerable" upwards revision, I'd like to know how you reached it?
- Vice President Hal Gardner: You're free to talk to my working group. You know frankly I believe there are a lot of people who don't take this threat seriously enough
- Mike Novick: [to Hal] I assure you we're taking very seriously and we have no agenda but to do so
- President Charles Logan: [to Hal] considering your revised numbers, what's your recommendation?
- Vice President Hal Gardner: I believe we should be thinking about a preemptive declaration of Martial law in the greater Los Angeles area
- Mike Novick: Mr. President, Martial law is appropriate only as a "last ditch measure", not as a preemptive one
- President Charles Logan: [to Mike] go on
- Mike Novick: Every study we've done has shown it would incite more unrest: not less and you couldn't do without approval from Congress
- Vice President Hal Gardner: Which is why we won't call it "Martial law", no one is going to play semantics here when we're putting troops on the street to try to keep people from killing each other
- Mike Novick: [Adamantly] you're talking about a panic that hasn't happened, right now the public isn't aware there's a threat. You declare Martial law, you'll have to tell them
- President Charles Logan: [to Hal] how long would it take to deploy the troops?
- Vice President Hal Gardner: I've already been in touch with the Pentagon: the National Guard and the Army are on standby, pending your decision
- Mike Novick: Mr. President, I agree there's a case to be made but for God's sake, let's make it to Congress. We can declare an emergency session
- President Charles Logan: We don't have time Mike. Hal is right, this attack could take place any minute, if CTU can't find this Bierko, and we're going to get hit! It would be smart to have control of the streets
- Kim Bauer: [after seeing Jack for the first time after she was told her father was still alive as Barry stands next to her] I don't know what to say, I don't know what you expect me to say
- Jack Bauer: You don't have to say anything
- Kim Bauer: Why didn't you just tell me you were alive?
- Jack Bauer: I couldn't, if you knew I was alive, you would've been at risk, I had no choice
- Barry Landes: You could've "chosen" to trust her
- Jack Bauer: I'd like to speak to my daughter alone please
- Barry Landes: I don't think that's a good idea
- Jack Bauer: I don't care what you think
- Barry Landes: I'm sure you don't: all that matters is you and the judgments you make, even if it affects those that love you
- Jack Bauer: [Irritated, implying he wants to speak to her alone] Kim...
- Kim Bauer: Barry, please let me speak to my dad
- Barry Landes: I'll be right outside
- Kim Bauer: Yeah
- Kim Bauer: [to Jack] don't judge him: he was there when no one else was
- Jack Bauer: The most painful I've been through was having to walk away from you, even more painful than losing your mother but it was the only way to make sure you would be safe
- Kim Bauer: I buried you
- Jack Bauer: I know
- Kim Bauer: You know there's something with people like you? You can't hold onto anything. Chase couldn't either, he and I tried for a while then he was gone, just like you and now your back and I'm suppose to... I'm happy your alive, I am, but I can't give you what you want right now
- Jack Bauer: Ok I understand that
- Bill Buchanan: You called for me?
- Tony Almeida: [while being treated in CTU medical] yeah
- Bill Buchanan: What's going on?
- Tony Almeida: That's what I wanted to ask you
- Bill Buchanan: What'd you mean?
- Bill Buchanan: What'd you think I mean? My wife was killed this morning: right in front of my eyes and nobody here has told me who did it and why
- Bill Buchanan: The investigation is "ongoing"
- Tony Almeida: Come on, I used to work here. I know that's what you say to people when you don't want to tell them the truth
- Bill Buchanan: The truth is you're not an agent anymore, what you're asking me is classified. It doesn't matter what I tell you, there's nothing you can do
- Tony Almeida: [Angrily] I know there's nothing I can do. look at me for God's sake, I just want to know who did it, I think for the sake of all the years I've given this place and all the sacrifices I've made, I deserve to know, don't you?
- Bill Buchanan: All I can tell you is Michelle's murder was part of a "bigger plan", to supply terrorists with Sentox nerve gas
- Tony Almeida: Who's behind it? Who's responsible?
- Bill Buchanan: The highest we've been able to get in the chain of command is someone you might know from when you worked here: Christopher Henderson
- Tony Almeida: What? Why?
- Bill Buchanan: We're working on it
- Tony Almeida: [Shaking his head] don't let him get away with this, don't you let him cut a deal
- Bill Buchanan: [Before leaving] I won't
- Martha Logan: [Meeting privately] what is it?
- Mike Novick: The country's facing a crisis: the President needs you
- Martha Logan: [Amused] he needs me
- Mike Novick: If you think the decision to let the attack on the motorcade was easy for him, you're wrong. I was with him when he got down on his knees and prayed
- Martha Logan: He did?
- Mike Novick: He loves you: he didn't want to lose you but with the lives of so many people in jeopardy, he felt he had no choice
- Martha Logan: We've known each other for a long time, you and I. why don't you stop talking about how a positive influence I am and tell me "precisely" it is your trying to get me to do?
- Mike Novick: [Sits down next to her] Vice President Gardener is advising your husband to declare Martial Law in Los Angeles in preparation for the release of the nerve gas. He wants to do it without Congressional sanction or a time table to lift it
- Martha Logan: He can't just rewrite the law
- Mike Novick: Hal's got an agenda
- Martha Logan: Well, his wrong: this will make things far worse
- Mike Novick: All I know is the President is listening to Hal Gardener and it will only help the country to have him listening to you as well
- President Charles Logan: [after she rubs his shoulder] can you forgive me?
- Martha Logan: You acted like the President of the United States
- President Charles Logan: Yes I did but you wanted me to be your husband first
- Martha Logan: I can't pretend that I didn't... I still love you as much as I always did: they'll be plenty of time for "us" later, you have to get back to work. The country needs you more than I do
- Lynn McGill: [while in an interrogation room] what is it?
- Bill Buchanan: We just got a call from LAPD: they found your sister's body in her apartment, she's been shot
- Lynn McGill: What? I just talked to her today, I saw her. That's impossible
- Bill Buchanan: I'm sorry, the police ID'd her body
- Lynn McGill: My God
- Bill Buchanan: If you need a phone to make some personal calls or talk to the police
- Lynn McGill: Her boyfriend did this to her: tell me his in custody?
- Bill Buchanan: His name Dwayne Thompkins?
- Lynn McGill: Yeah
- Bill Buchanan: He didn't do it, they found his body too. The police are trying to make sense of something. Do you know if either your sister or her boyfriend were involved in dealing drugs or had ties to organized crime?
- Lynn McGill: She was a pretty serious user but organized crime? No way, why?
- Bill Buchanan: The killings were clearly the work of a professional
- Lynn McGill: My God, I need to see preliminary forensics. Who's investigating? I have to talk to them
- Bill Buchanan: I can arrange a meeting
- Lynn McGill: No I have to talk to them now. They have to search the apartment, see if my key card is there
- Bill Buchanan: What're you talking about? What key card?
- Lynn McGill: My CTU key card, she has it
- Bill Buchanan: What is she doing with your key card?
- Lynn McGill: It was stolen from me alright? Her boyfriend took it
- Bill Buchanan: Why didn't you report this?
- Lynn McGill: I'm reporting it now: we don't have time to argue about this. Call and see if anyone used it to breach security, it was taken about... four hours ago
