When filmed in 1959, the set design attempted to portray a futuristic office of 1980. When J.J. Bunce enters Mr. Treadwell's office, prominently featured are the iconic table and chairs designed by renowned architect Eero Saarinen in 1957. The style became so timeless it would, indeed, have been found in an office of the 1980s and remains fashionable even in 2021.
Hanging above the Saarinen table is a mobile which, if not actually created by Alexander Calder, is clearly in the style of the famous sculptor, whose artwork also has become timeless.

On July 13, 1980, J.J. Bunce tells John Treadwell that, barring accidents, his 82-year-old mother-in-law should live another 32 years, 9 months and 7 days, which corresponds to April 20, 2013.
The "intercom" that Treadwell uses to talk to his mother-in-law is actually a Zenith Space Commander 400 television remote control. It's been set into a box, "Zenith" painted over and the grill appearing as a speaker.
