One of the Oddest Episodes of the Entire Series...
The premise of this installment- "leaving it all behind to escape to a tropical paradise"- is certainly a popular one, and is as relevant to today's audiences as it was back then.

And, despite all the flack he gets from us TAGS fans for playing a "dull" character that can't match up to Barney Fife's level of comedy- which is, let's face it, a somewhat unreasonable expectation- actor Jack Dodson was very good at playing "quirky character" comedy when given the right material to work with (as he does in this episode), resulting in a fun performance for the audience.

Having established all this, a good lead performance by Jack Dodson & a few solid laughs (which "Howard's New Life" delivers) cannot totally save this episode from being overshadowed by two glaring (and major) issues:

First of all, can a 30 minute show that centers & revolves around Howard Sprague- all by himself & on his own, starting a new life thousands of miles away from Mayberry- really be considered "The Andy Griffith Show"? It certainly doesn't seem that way, and the episode feels more like the pilot episode of a separate spin off series than TAGS we've come to know & love. It's not bad, it's just...weird & unfamiliar. Maybe if Andy Griffith was the one "getting away from it all", things would have clicked better within the context of the entire series, but the Howard Sprague character didn't even arrive on TAGS scene until nearly the end of Season 6, so devoting an entire episode to his life away from Mayberry is strange, especially for a TAGS character that we haven't known all that long.

Second- and even more distracting for those fans that appreciate series continuity- it seems like the writers were in such a hurry to get Howard out of Mayberry & on that island inside of 30 minutes that they completely threw out/ignored the "playbook" on Howard Sprague that had been built up over the last two seasons, creating with this episode two huge plot holes:

1. What happened to Howard's extremely vocal, possessive, domineering mother, the one he lived with that used to freak out if Howard was 10 minutes late calling in/coming home? Howard's suddenly moving away forever- on the spur of the moment- and Mom is nowhere to been seen. Has she suddenly decided to keep quiet? Is she at home sulking? Has she mysteriously disappeared? Even more perplexing, Howard- in this episode- conveniently goes from being a mama's boy who is ALWAYS talking about "mother" to never mentioning her at all. This doesn't make any sense. with what we've learned about Howard up to this time.

2. And speaking of disappearing acts- what happened to Millie? After being in love & engaged just three episodes ago, now she has vanished off the face of the earth. OK, maybe they broke up off camera, but Howard's leaving Mayberry forever and she doesn't even come to the bus station to say good-bye and wish him well??? Here again is another unexplained break in established character plot lines.

The aforementioned blatant disregard of established character backgrounds & series continuity should result in this episode receiving a lower rating (shame on you, naughty writers), but I have to give it a 6 because of a strong (and funny) performance by Jack Dodson (perhaps his best outing in the series)- and for a very brief but funny appearance by legendary character actor Harry Dean Stanton ("Alien", "The Green Mile") as the nearly comatose proprietor of the island trading post.

Dead End Job!
Hitchcoc10 January 2020
Howard follows his dream to go to a Caribbean island and live, giving up his dull job as a county clerk. Moving there, he finds that paradise isn't all it's cracked up to be. There is an interesting dream sequence. Howard is an odd duck (Howard the Duck). But his sincere effort to fit in with the island natives is pretty funny. There is an interesting encounter with a young native boy.

Love This Epsiode

I do love this episode, but the negatives are so perfectly stated in another (2015) review that I'm doubting my "8 Star" rating. Still I related to Howard's dream, and the island environment is remarkably portrayed. No more implausible than Aunt Bee's flying lesson. But so far from Mayberry, that yes, it doesn't feel like an Andy Griffith. Still it makes for a fun watch.

"Wanna buy a ship in a bottle?"

One of TAGS most off the wall episodes. A treat to see Howard (Jack Dodson) highlighted. Delightful mother Sprague (Mabel Albertson) is AWOL in this one. Some of JD best TAGS work. The whole start to finish island scenes were classic. The cast of characters he meets at the island all nail their parts and perfectly cast. The flashbacks throughout all were tremendous. The scenes of Howard meeting his fellow Islanders at the general store, and the Andy & Bee visit dream are my favorites. Always creepy legendary Harry Dean Stanton gave a stellar performance. Lots of the usual wonderful script holes. Howard didn't check out the place first. He's totally unfamiliar with location of stores, doctors, vital services. Did he even have a phone? A mailing address? Finances pre-internet would be a tall task to transfer money, pay bills and sort in such quick order. Why pick a place so dreadfully isolated? Odd epilogue. Why would Andy, Emmett, Goober, and Howard all be at the filling station late at night after hours?

"The Howard Sprague Show! Not!"

Warning: Spoilers
Nice to see one of the beloved characters getting a chance to basically shine on his own for a bit. Jack Dodson who plays Howard Sprague, did a good turn here. They say this wonderful actor was just like his character Howard. I like the fact that Andy or Aunt Bee or Opie didn't "hog" the episode as usual. I mean I know the show was called "Andy Griffth Show" for a reason. But give everyone else a chance and take a backseat every now and then. Mayberry wasn't just Andy in it. There was so many beloved characters in it. I wish they would have done more episodes like this. Where different characters were the main and only focus of the episode.

Harry Dean Stanton had a nice guest starring role on this one playing the island's beatnik Proprietor. He looked and acted the part exactly!

Howard's Escape Flops...On Several Levels
AudioFileZ3 February 2024
I guess it was chance that made sense, but this episode underscores just how far from those first four seasons TAGS will go to fill in that hole ever since we lost Barney. As is clear with each episode of this last season the producers are trying to elevate Howard Sprague. As his character is about the straightest arrow in the quiver it's kind of hard. That episode about his marriage might have been like Howard stepping out, but he didn't make it as he realized he was so set in his ways. Here, however, the writers create a new Howard...in about fifteen minutes. Tiring of being meticulous while working a job in which Opie convinces Howard is meaningless and mundane, Howard acts on what he perceives in a travelog to be the perfect life on a Caribbean island. This might have sounded like a funny role reversal on paper, not so much in the watching. Howard is a much weaker purveyor of comedy than Goober. And Goober no matter what mostly is way short of Barney. That said this Howard totally centric episode just seems flat and out of place. One thing seems notable, Harry Dean Stanton as the island shopkeeper. Stanton's checked out character is underplayed memorably.
