Writer John Collee used his Bergerac stories to get a lot off his chest. The episode starts brilliantly with Charlie unearthing a gold watch as he tries to get out of a bunker (golf!). He rapidly realises that the watch is round a wrist... The dead man is a local writer, Graham Hawksworth. Jim goes to interview Mrs H, a beautiful younger woman who is known to have had many lovers. But Graham had turned the tables and was having an affair - with Susan? The evidence points that way. Seems like a simple whodunnit. Jim and Susan are filmed wandering round Jersey's beautiful locations, the zoo, the beach, like a couple in an advert. They are also forced to spout some pretty terrible dialogue. We walk round the fabulous houses of the rich. Susan and Mrs H wear gorgeous 80s clothes - big skirts and boxy blouses and jackets. While Mrs H was threatening Susan with a rifle I kept wondering where I could get the pattern for her jersey. The ending - well, the whole story really - is melodramatic and silly. But it's enjoyable for all that.
