Chantey Jack (Sidney James) is a veteran seaman and a troubadour who has arrives at New Providence.
He entertains the men at the tavern and tells them a few stories. However Chantey Jack takes fright when he catches Captain Flask (Anthony Dawson) arriving at the tavern.
As he flees, Chantey Jack warns Crewman Dickon to beware the mark of the Hawk. When Chantey Jack is found dead a murder inquiry is launched.
Crewman Dickon is convinced that Captain Flask is the murderer but no one believes him. So he creeps into Flask's boat.
Dan Tempest goes looking for him and Flask gives himself away. He has a tattoo of the hawk in his hand and is looking for buried treasure. However he is also haunted by a tune.
Anthony Dawson specialised in playing sinister villains so he was always going to be a baddie. James had a good cameo role. Some psychology is used by Tempest and Dickon to play on Flask's fear.
