THE DETECTIVES – Terror on Ice - 1961

This one is episode 61 of the 97 episode run of, THE DETECTIVES. This series starred Robert Taylor and ran between 1959 and 1962. The first two seasons ran at a half hour and the last season had a runtime of an hour. The series followed the detective squad in a big city precinct. Cast regulars included, Mark Goddard, Russell Thorson, Tige Andrews, Lee Farr and Adam West. Robert Taylor headlines as Police Captain, Matt Holbrook.

There has been a string of hold-ups at several food markets. The crooks, Walter Burke and Adam Williams hit the markets at opening, then, grab the previous days take from the manager's safe. This time they hit the market where Detective Tige Andrew's son, Doug Lambert works.

The not all right in the head Williams beats on the manager because the man, Bill Quinn, refuses to open the safe. Young Lambert manages to hit the silent alarm telling the Police a robbery is happening. The boys in blue are quickly at the scene. Detective Andrews is all for charging in to get his son once he discovers which market it is.

Wiser heads, Detective Russell Thorson and Detective Captain, Robert Taylor, restrain the distraught father from doing anything to make the situation worse. Thorson tries to talk Adams and Burke out, but the two drag Lambert and sales clerk, Laura Shelton into the meat fridge. Adams demands that the Police give them a car and free passage out of the area.

Needless to say this is not going to happen. Taylor has a man use a cutting torch to cut through the back of the meat locker while Williams is busy talking with the Police. The Police break through and put a few rounds where they do the most good. Andrew's son and the sales clerk are rescued. The only place, Williams and Burke are going, is the county morgue.

A real tension filled episode with fine work from both the cast and crew.

The director here is former big screen man, Lewis Allen. Allen was best known for the film noir, DESERT FURY, SO EVIL MY LOVE, A BULLET FOR JOEY, ILLEGAL, SUDDENLY, CHICAGO DEADLINE and APPOINTMENT WITH DANGER.
