He has a fever and should be in bed, but Billy (Philip Brown) is missing. Understandably concerned, Doris (Doris Day) finally locates her son in the barn with Lord Nelson. He is nursing a new pet. They learn the mallard duck (named "Sherman") has been shot. Doris finds out wizened Strother Martin (as Tyrone Lovey) shot the bird, and has been shooting on her property. Doris and Leroy (James Hampton) hatch a plot to stop Mr. Martin, a chicken-chomping neighbor who denies any involvement in the shooting. This is a fairly routine episode, notable for one of Strother Martin's appearances. He offers the usual, appealing characteristics. Along with her real-life motherly love, the episode give us some real life Doris Day as her character continuously mentions a love for wild animals and their right to be free.
